Bite Sized Chunks

I started off the morning sort of dreading today. Labor Day was this past Monday and so the past week in the deli was hell. I would come home exhausted, and would typically just collapse.

So. Many. Naps!!!!!

I swear, I slept through about half of the week when I wasn't at work....

Which meant not only did I not do any writing this week, but my inability to even remember yesterday means that any brainstorming I may have done over the week is completely gone. Can't recollect anything.

And then I woke up this morning, realizing I yet again had nothing to show for my week. I was ashamed to post one more "Excuses" update. "Oh man, guys, I didn't do anything, but I have this valid reason so that I don't feel like a loser!"

Yeah, because THAT truly shows dedication to a craft I wish to make in to a profession.

This guilt of letting another week slip by me actually kicked my butt in to gear. So I started my morning by FINALLY working on one of my in-queue snippets. Still not sure if it will end up in the official X-Future: Snippets, but it's at least some sort of writing.

It's the farewell conversation between Lia and Sasha. It's more for my own character-building knowledge than anything else. Better understand what Lia was up to over the summer time skip. Might even get back in to her head enough to work on the Lia In NYC snippet I need to legit write for the board.

Ironically, I wrote in Sasha's POV while trying to get in to Lia's head. Sasha isn't even my character! So the story is getting sent off to 2-feathers-and-a-stone to see if I kept the girl properly in character for this scene. Once I get approval on the snippet I may officially post it for you fine people to check out.

In the meantime, rejoice with me in the fact that I'm not as much of a bum as I thought! I can force myself to write! YAY!

Accountability and guilt does wonders for my motivation.

On a less formal note, Spink started role playing this past week. I couldn't find an organic reason for one of my girls to come across where she was, but Phfylburt sure as heck did. And it was fantastic! So her character Donna hid away in the laundry room, only for Hubby to have Deadpool find her. That interaction was fantastic as well.

After slacking off for a while, this morning I finally got Lia in on the action. Not nearly as fantastic as Deadpool or Nodya, but at least the girl is doing something. Sad to say, this was the first RPing I had her do since June!!! So stupid!

So, yay for finally having some roleplaying!

Hubby also set up a scene for Willow as well. She, Chayse, and another player who recently rejoined the board all stumbled upon a news report about the couple of students that went missing over the summer. Soooooo, there's that....

It also helps light a fire under me to write up what actually happened to those two. I've kind of been dragging my feet about it because the events are so epic I'm not entirely sure how I want it to officially go down. I sort of want to collab on it, but past events have proven that is sort of a bad idea. Either the other party is super excited and I drop the ball, or I'm super excited and the other party disappears from the internet.

Guess I just need to pull the trigger on that project.

In other Role Playing news, I'm back in moderately-regular contact with Neghya. We talked for a while last night about our respective online roleplaying groups. She added me to her Facebook-based group - I still need to try to catch up on that, but it's a bit of a daunting task with the FB formatting - and I in turn sent her X-Future: The Second Generation Begins as well as the link to X-Future. That way she can decide if she wanted to set up a "reading account" in order to see how things work there. She seems to love the concept behind X-Future, but sadly her two favorite characters - Beast and Storm - are already "taken". So I'm not too sure I can actually convince her to join. Still, if I can get her to read it, there will be one more person I can talk to about the board. That might get me excited enough to work on the next chapter of TSGB.

In fact, I was online specifically to work on said next chapter when Neghya and I started chatting last night. It's going to be a while before the chapter is ready for posting since I still have to sift through hundreds of posts, but at least I'm finally in motion again, right?

I focus too much on the end result sometimes. Then I see all the steps needed to get there and I become overwhelmed. I need to remember planning my wedding, and how I took things in bite-sized chunks in order to build up to such a major party/gathering. I was able to do so much with only my mom, sister, bestie, and fiance to really help me out. And even then I took the brunt of the work right up until a mental break down about 3 months before the wedding. That's when Mom called me a moron for not delegating more, and I truly let the others help me.

My point is that while I may not really have others to delegate to when it comes to my writing, I really need to start thinking the same way. Yes, it's a daunting task that seems too big and too overwhelming to tackle while looking at the big picture. That's what usually paralyzes me. That concept of time needed to accomplish such a massive undertaking. However, if I can change my POV to think in smaller bites, I may be able to conquer anything!

Ali Luke uses this concept a lot in her advice. Sure, the idea of writing a full novel in a year seems out of reach, but when you break it down to x-number of words per season, per month, per week, per weekend, or even per day, it seems achievable. Ali even figured out how to finish a roughly 81,000 word draft every 3 months; basically one a season. With Rachel Aaron's ability to write 10,000 words a day, she's capable of writing a full draft in a week or two, and then rework said draft multiple times before actually cranking out the finished product roughly every season or so. Hell, her editor probably works slower than she does. Then you have the idea of NaNo. Fifty-thousand word novel in just one month? However, even without Aaron's insane writing speed/availability, it's still achievable by a lot of people.

It's all about breaking it down.

50,000 words. Seems daunting and impossible for one month. Roughly 1666 words a day? Still a bit much, but definitely more do-able as long as you don't slack off. 81,000 every three months? Not as mind-boggling as NaNo's task, but still a bit overwhelming. Break that down to about 27,000 a month or - as Ali put it - about 900 a day? That seems manageable - at least for her - even with a toddler.

Now let's take someone like me who isn't as ambitious quite yet. What if I want to give myself the full year to write a 90,000 word novel? That's only 7500 words a month, 1875 words per week, or about 268 words a day. Heck, if we just divide 90,000 by 365 - to avoid the messiness of some months having more or less days, or the ones that have five weeks instead of four - that's even less! A simple 247 words per day will get me MORE than a 90,000 word manuscript within a year's time.

Heck, this blog post up to this point is roughly 1300 words and it only kept me 2hrs to write; which also includes taking time-outs for breakfast breaks, potty breaks, researching, and chatting with both celestialTyrant and my sister.

Not even 250 words a day!? That's essentially me just taking a daily half-hour time-out in order to write SOMETHING that would further my manuscript. THAT'S IT! If I'm inspired - or at least have the next part properly plotted out - I could write my daily amount in just ten minutes! Even if there is some sort of holiday or family gathering that prevents me from taking that 30minute writing break, I can easily bump up the next day's writing to a simple 500 words. If I get in to a good enough writing flow I could get the entire week's worth of writing done in one long session!

The only thing holding me back is motivation to try!

Still not sure how to beat that hurdle, but I'm working on it.

Which I guess is the best thing about this blog. I'm openly working on probably one of the hardest roadblocks in writing. I'm just laying my struggle out for the world to work through with me. I'm pointing out all the tactics I'm trying, and explaining whether or not they work and why. I'm figuring it all out publicly. So that maybe you - or some future writer who has yet to find my blog - can feel like someone else has your struggle. That you're not alone. That you're not a failure for having this problem. And maybe you'll try out new methods of conquering this beast with me. Maybe something won't work for me and I'll have to move on to the next trick, but something in that gauntlet of things I try will show you a method that is your golden key to motivation.

I have such insanely high hopes for this blog, don't I?

Regardless, I guess my latest task is to try to think of writing the NaNo way year long: one day's word count at a time. Simple, small bites. Who cares if it's bad? As long as it's completed. It can be edited later.

Well, okay, maybe THAT is my biggest fault. I get too excited about my projects and post them In Progress, and so each section has to be PERFECT before I can move on since I can't go back and edit later; it's already out for the world to see.

Me thinks I need to first master patience - not posting things until they're complete - and the art of sketching out full plotlines so writing each chapter moves faster and smoother....

I just gave myself so much homework, didn't I? Good thing the school year started again this week. And I WAS commenting on how I miss college...

Ringing In 2013

Drawn by DeviantArtist Dracu-Teufel666

Okay, well I swear I didn’t intend to have a holiday hiatus.

Drawn by DeviantArtist Pluvias
My INTENTION was to postpone the December 23rd post so I had time to finish last minute Christmas stuff, and then have my belated post Christmas evening; as a way to wish you all a happy holiday. Then Christmas got crazy, I got distracted by a gift Hubby gave me, and I had to get ready for a road trip home to celebrate my cousin’s wedding this past Sunday. Which is why there also wasn’t a blog post on the 30th. Because of the bad snow storm on Saturday, I couldn’t drive down after work like intended, spend the night hanging out with the family and working on this blog post, get up early Sunday to get ready and post this entry, and then go to the ceremony at noon. INSTEAD, I got stuck in a snow bank, carefully traversed through town doing last minute errands, shoveled, went to bed early, got up at 3am to shovel some more, and then left at 4am to do a five-hour drive, arrive at my mom’s with barely enough time for me to get ready, drive to the wedding, and then by the time we got back to my mom’s I crashed.

So forgive me my past two missed weeks.

Sadly, not having time to write blog posts also meant no free time to write, period. Well, okay, I lied about NO free time, but I’ll get to that in a moment.

The week before Christmas was spent franticly attempting to finish off all the crochet gifts I was making for everyone. The only thing even remotely exciting in the world of writing is that I received an email from Devious.Editor! You guys haven’t heard that name in a WHILE, have you? Well, not only did she want to reassure me that she was still alive, but she also wanted to send me her latest chapter to edit. So those of you who are fans of her story “Fugitive” there should be another chapter up soonish. Unfortunately, I haven’t gotten around to beta reading it yet. But I aim to before this Sunday’s update. We’ll see how that goes.

So now that the holidays have come and gone, I’ll be working on cleaning house – since that’s been neglected for about two months, finding a new one, and generally relaxing after all the holiday chaos. Part of that relaxing process is going to consist of continuing two new video games, which will hopefully not, but most likely distract me from any creative projects for a little while.

One is celestialTyrant’s game that he’s keeping at our house, and the other is a Christmas gift from Hubby. Sorry about this. Blame them.

The first game is an ADORABLE Wii game called Kirby’s Epic Yarn. I cannot properly describe how amazingly cute this game is without spending an entire post just on that. So instead have a Let’s Play of the opening of the game. OH! And just FYI... Chuggaconroy's commentary is VERY similar to CT's when he plays... so it's also a bit of an insight in to him. :-D

As for the gift from Hubby? Well, let’s just say that he did really well! See, for YEARS I’ve been trying to track down “Professor Layton and the Curious Village” for my DS. I read about the game back when I used to get Nintendo Power and fell in love before even playing. Problem was I didn’t have the money to buy it when it first came out. In fact, I almost NEVER buy a new game when it first comes out because of how expensive they are. So I was waiting for the game to be old enough that the price would drop. However, the game sold out before that happened, and I couldn’t find a copy since.

The Professor Layton series is up to four games now, and I refused to play any of the other ones without first playing Curious Village. Soon the second game “Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box” became just as hard to find. I guess people just loved the games so much that once they bought them they never traded them back in to the game stores. You can just guess what two DS games I got for Christmas this year.

I’ve been playing “Curious Village” pretty much non-stop since Christmas and I just MAY be at the half way point. I LOVE this game! This series already is in my top three. May have pushed Fable out of the number two spot; depending on how well done the sequels are.

So, again, sorry. I technically HAVE had time to work on this blog post, or beta read, or work on my own story. I’ve just been distracted by video games. Guess that’s what happens when you cut them out completely. Sort of like when you “finish” your diet and just back the pounds right back on because you missed all the food you cut out.

So let’s take this time to figure out this year’s resolutions. Although I didn’t stick with ALL of my resolutions last year, I did manage to use most of them as excellent guide lines, and 2012 was more-or-less a fantastic year because of it. Let’s aim for 2013 to be even better, shall we?

RESOLUTION NUMBER ONE: Improve upon writing style; be it voice, grammar, spelling, speed, consistency, schedule, professionalism, or all of the above.
Practice makes perfect and I’m hoping to have a lot more. I really improved over the last year. Even if I didn’t consistently write my fiction, I almost always hit that Sunday Update Day goal. I need to focus harder on getting updates done on time, as well as being just as consistent with my fiction updates.
I need to take what I learned from this year’s Script Frenzy, and definitely from my first year of NaNo. I'm going to participate in every free-entry writing contest I come across. Starting with a Hey Arnold Valentine's Day contest. Entries need to be in by February 8th. Any suggestions on pairing to write about?
Even when I'm not working on contest entries - ESPECIALLY when I'm not working on contest entries - I need to crack down on scheduling time for my writing instead of “finding” time for it.
Less TV. More Writing!

RESOLUTION NUMBER TWO: Become healthier!
Not a writing resolution, but still an important one. Both becoming healthier and writing consistently seem to have the same principal of goal making. As well as having support and a “buddy” to help you stay motivated. I need to lose a few more pounds, and both Hubby and I still eat like college students. I need to be more active and possibly get Hubby more involved so it is easier for me to stay on track. Hopefully, this will spill over and help me better time manage so I can also write – and have the energy to do so.
Pass me some of that Basil Pesto Hummus if you please!

RESOLUTION NUMBER THREE: Get more organized!
Another one that is seemingly unrelated to writing at first glance. My house is a sty. Completely. I miss one day of cleaning because of this, that, and the other thing. Before I know it, the pile of dishes and laundry are both overwhelming and discouraging. Lo and behold, I then just sit on the couch, moping about how gross our house looks, but don’t actually accomplish anything. Either that or I finally snap and go in to a cleaning frenzy that lasts a full day or two.
If I can stay more organized with the house I’ll find more time to write because I’m not worried about the chores I’m neglecting. I can then just focus. I can also learn how to better avoid being discouraged when the writing piles up. I’ll get in to a more consistent rhythm with everything and that new attitude will certainly spill over in to my writing life.

RESOLUTION NUMBER FOUR: Finish What Is Truly Meant To Be: A Hey Arnold Musical
Including the chapter that has been in the works since the summer, I have eleven left before the conclusion of the story. As long as I can get a chapter out a month – which can be possible if I follow Resolution Number One – and I don’t add any more chapters to the story I can finish up before 2014! I started the story in 2010 so I think three years to finish an 18 chapter fanfic is more than enough time! Sheesh!

RESOLUTION NUMBER FIVE: Work on World Building Gyateara
For those who don't know/remember, Gyateara is the name of the world I created for my NaNo story. It started off as sort of a parody of the world of Albion from the game Fable. However, I've also done a lot of world building for my D&D character Amara. Mostly focusing on one country though. So why not put Albion and the country I created for Amara on the same planet? I sort of touched upon this idea during my last actual post. Gyateara can be this land that most of my High Fantasy stories take place - as well as quite a few D&D campaigns. To accomplish this goal, however, I have to first build Gyateara. It will be a fun project to do throughout 2013.
Maybe I can even do this along side DarkAngel1326 since she seems to be building and even bigger and bigger playground for her story "Of Blood and Honor" - as well as possible accompanying stories.

RESOLUTION NUMBER SIX: Become a better beta reader for my writers
It's pathetic that my writers have to wait days, weeks, or even months before I get around to reading their stuff. How does that help them? Now they're in a holding pattern while their muse and writing drive slips away because I can't find an hour or two to help them out. Then their readers have to wait forever for the update because of my slacking.
ChibiSunnie is such a fantastic beta for me because she's quick! Without a word, she motivates me to work daily so I can send something to her daily since she does such a quick turn around. Her quick responses drive me to keep going. She keeps me in that writing flow. I need to become more like her.
DA constantly praises me as her beta. It's time to become the Awesome Beta she keeps claiming I am!
*Scampers off to finally beta for Devious.Editor and DA*

So there you have it. My six resolutions for 2013. Let's see how well I stick to them!

Honestly, I had so many other blog posts figured out. On Christmas I was going to go on about the presents I made, the awesome ones I got, and all of that jibberjabber I have above about Professor Layton and Kirby was going to be in that long post. Then on Monday I was going to do sort of a Year In Review to reflect on 2012. Then I was going to have this post the following day to talk about my resolutions. So I had to sort of jumble everything together in to one post. I may still do that Year In Review post for Sunday, but then again I might also talk more about the Valentine's Day contest. I guess we'll just see what I feel about writing.

In the meantime... DE and DA both have stories chilling in my mailbox. So I'm off to do some reading!

Happy Halloween!

A Happy Halloween to everyone!

Those of you that were in the path of Hurricane Sandy’s Frankenstorm, how did you fair? Is everyone alright? Dry? With power?

As promised, I’m giving you this last blog update before I start on my grand journey in to the chaos known as National Novel Writing Month – or NaNoWriMo for short… NaNo for those of us that are super lazy. Are you reading this on my normal Sunday Update Day instead of Halloween when it was posted? Were you out of power/internet until now? If you answered “Yes” to the first question but “No” to the second, was it because you didn’t know I updated? You can make sure you read my posts the day I publish them by following this blog via blogger – I can let you guys know how if need be, just drop a comment below – signing up for the email updates – they’re not spammy and just drop the post conveniently in an email – follow me on Twitter @LycoRogue, or follow me on my facebook page. I’m actually thinking of also starting up one of those Fan Pages or whatever on Facebook. What do you guys think?

Anyway, I think I made progress with some of my planning for my upcoming story. It’s still the awesomely lame working title of “Massive Hybric Crossover Fanfic” but at least my female lead finally has a name: Natalie Myers.

I’m also in the process of filling out the Writing Checklist bullet points brought up in Larry Brooks’ StoryFix blog post. I think I’m doing pretty well. I’m confident so far that I can at least crank out a few chapters in the next month – even if I don’t make that 50k word goal.

This brings me to my next great announcement: My Personal NaNo Goal.

I will still blog during the month! I’ll do the Diary updates like what I do for Script Frenzy, but it will be during my weekly updates instead of my normal end-of-the-month one. Also, I am aiming to have at least one new chapter done by the time I update each week, so aside from knowing how I’m doing you can also read my horrendous updates! It won’t be pretty, but it will hopefully keep me accountable when it comes to my writing.

Finally, before I leave, I'm beyond psyched to announce:
CHIBISUNNIE HAS POSTED HER VERY FIRST STORY!!!!
I personally think she did so well and that I've got some competition in this Halloween contest. ;D

Go check out my awesome beta's work and let her know what you think!

A Time Out for Setting Goals

Boy am I bad at this "Leaving the Internet so I can Write" thing. I'm actually posting blog updates more frequently now than before I was "on break"... *sigh*

Anyway, I woke up this morning and found the latest Newsletter from Aliventures. It really helped me out and I wanted to share that with you, my readers. Originally, I was going to just put a sentence or two blurb about it for a mid-month update post on what I've been doing daily... much like what I did last year for Script Frenzy.

However, what started as a simple "this is what happened today" grew in to an actual informative blog post! Since I don't really ever have those, I figured I'd go ahead and make it a blog post all of its own!

Silly Ali Luke and her wonderful ability to just spark something in me! :P

OK, here is my reteaching of what she came up with in the newsletter. Full credit goes to Ali and Aliventures.

First off, make a quick list of five things that make you feel happy/excited/thankful. It is a great way to destress as you focus on all the good in your life right now. Alternatively, you could dance around the house singing "My Favorite Things" from "The Sound of Music"...

Now, these don't even need to be things related to writing, they just need to make you happy.

Here's mine:
  • FINALLY having a job after 6months unemployment
  • Actually getting back in to steady writing
  • EASTER!
  • My husband's cats actually purring when I pet them! See, the cats are still at my in-laws' house, but we were taking care of them while the in-laws were on vacation for 2 weeks. The one cat doesn't like me touching him at ALL, let alone wanting me to pet him and actually PURRING when doing so! I think I'm making progress!
  • Nice weather finally back! Especially since the first floor of my house is basically one large open space, having the windows wide open with the sun pouring in just FLOODS the room with light! No better motivator for writing/cleaning/working out.
That was a fun little exercise, right? If TinkerBell sprinkled pixie dust on you right now you'd be able to fly off to Neverland, correct? Good! OK, now on to the main exercise of the newsletter. Setting up goals for your writing. Having goals, deadlines, or what-have-you will help you focus, and help make sure that writing isn't pushed off to the side while you work on your remaining laundry list of chores and obligations.

First off, come up with your lifetime End Goal. For me it is actually one of three things:
  1. Become a professional writer that is popular enough to work solely on writing while at home.
  2. Become an accomplished screenwriter either for a successful TV series or for multiple blockbuster movies.
  3. Become a professional film editor that is again established enough to be able to work from home.
As you can see, my true End Goal is to be successful enough to work from home. Probably because I would really love to be a stay-at-home Mom, but still have a professional purpose in life.

OK, now that you have your End Goal, let's look at the three mini-goals you'll need to set. These babies help you really stay on track when heading towards a long-term goal. They also give you a sense of accomplishment as they keep going successfully by.

For example, when I was a high schooler in need of braces, I didn't look at the two-year end goal. Instead, I broke it down to 24 months. Sure, it SOUNDED longer because there were so many of them, but months go by so quickly that the month count ticked away easily. Before I knew it, the two years were over! Setting goals that come and go quickly on your way to a much larger goal much farther away really helps encourage you.

Anyway, Ali's suggestion for manageable small-goals is to look at what you want to accomplish THIS WEEK, and then THIS MONTH, and finally THIS YEAR.

A week from now, what do you want to accomplish? What goal do you want to meet before the month is out? What would you love to be done with before midnight on December 31st? Set these goals for yourself so you know where you're heading, and reset them as they pass.

These are my goals.

THIS WEEK:
By Wednesday, April 11th I want my latest fanfiction chapter done! Preferably, done and published by Easter, but if it is at least done enough to send to ChibiSunnie to do the final beta-reading so that the chapter is up by the 15th; I'll consider this goal met!

THIS MONTH:
Actually complete Script Frenzy this year! By April 30th I want to have a 100page script staring back at me from my computer screen!

THIS YEAR:
I want to be able to finish my fanfiction before I hit the In-Progress-For-Two-Years mark. If I DO surpass two years for this story, I want to at least have the darn thing complete before 2013 ticks in.

If you are truly meticulous, you can break these down even more.
What is your Bucket List to check off BEFORE YOU DIE? What do you want to accomplish in SIX MONTHS? What would you like done before the end of THIS SEASON? What goal do you want to hit before YOUR BIRTHDAY? What is your to-do list for TODAY? Make your list of milestones as broad or as tight as you need to stay on track, just make sure to not overwhelm yourself. Also, make sure your goals are appropriate for the time you allot yourself. Be it writing or losing weight, the key is pacing so you don't burn out and hate attempting for that next goal.

As for me? I'll make two more goals for today before saying goodbye.
  1. Stop making blog posts when I should be working on my fiction!
  2. Either get up to my Script Frenzy word count, or get the next section of the chapter to Chibi for editing.
Now, off to accomplish these goals!
