World Building Pitfalls Chain Me to Fear

I've been stuck in my world building. I've been stuck with my X-Future reboot. I've been stuck in my collab with Ronoxym. I've just been stuck.

I tried to move through it by going back through some of my old world building notes. I found the pile of print-outs I made up back in 2008 when I first started building Amara's world. That's right, I've been world building for six years! I have print-outs of maps. Tons of maps. I use them as study materials. I use them to figure out how our world looks. I use them to study how natural landforms are placed. I study the shape of coastlines and the twists of rivers. I study the boarders of countries and states. I even have print-outs of Middle Earth from Lord of the Rings and Alagaësia from Inheritance Cycle. This way I know how even fictional worlds are laid out.

I have notes on the statistics of different states: rough state width and height, overall square feet, square feet of water vs. land, tallest mountain, deepest valley, etc. I have notes on medieval through Victorian England - mostly population density and the like. I have all these stats and real-world examples to try to help me make my maps and my world as realistic as I can.

This attention to detail will better immerse my readers and players. It will prevent those nitpickers out there from dissecting my work and pointing out how inaccurate and implausible everything is. I don't need a reader to be ripped out of my story because I have a desert surrounded by a rainforest without any magical explanation as to how that would ever work. I don't need a reader to wonder how a character can cross the entire country - on horseback - within a week when it's the size of Texas. I don't need a reader to explain in an online essay how implausible both my population density and technology level are given the rest of the surrounding environment.

In other words. I don't need any noticeable goofs if I can prevent it.

Which is probably why I'm stalled.

Fear.

Every writer fights against it at some point, and this is my time I guess.

Yes, I am concerned that while I have a small following swearing up and down that my writing is fantastic, what if they are the minority? I mean, my stories aren't exactly breaking records for readership. Same with this blog. On the flipside, what if I am as good as my fans claim, but only if I have the crutch of a pre-established world? What if once I move away from fanfiction and work on my own original works it isn't as compelling; entertaining?

My biggest fear is that I literally cannot move away from being a fanfiction writer. That it's so ingrained in me that I unintentionally write something that is just a thinly veiled version of another tale. I'm mostly interested in writing a high-fantasy tale heavily inspired by D&D. That's the main reason I'm building Gyateara in the first place. However, what's going to keep me from being just one of the numerous others who end up writing a dumbed-down Lord of the Rings? How do I avoid my tales being unfavorably compared to the Grandfather of High Fantasy? Or have critics call me out as simply transcribing a D&D campaign?

What if - in an effort to avoid being compared - I go too far away from the inspiring source, and then my world doesn't work. What if there's a flaw I didn't notice, or it just isn't as intriguing as Middle Earth?

And because of this, I'm stuck. I'm afraid of coming up with something new because it either sounds stupid, or it's too tedious a task to attempt, or it ends up just sounding like Lord of the Rings anyway...

What got me focusing on this fear this week?
Reading those notes I printed out in 2008.

It was shortly before the third book in the Inheritance Cycle was released. I had printed a few things off as warning passages for my own world-building, and I had forgotten about them - to an extent. The first was a short online essay explaining how the author was able to use the few clues Christopher Paolini put in his books in order to figure out things such as the size and population of Alagaësia. The essayist Shinobaka continued to state that Paolini was vague enough in his writing for it to not be that big of an issue, but made a huge mistake in both creating a map of Alagaësia and then including it with the books. Now Shinobaka could truly figure out the estimated land-mass and population of the continent. Based on these facts and the map, Shinobaka was able to note that Paolini's description of both The Empire and it's army were insanely disproportional, both to each other and to the rest of the continent.

Shinobaka's calculations had the whole of the continent about the size of France and Germany combined, the Empire about the size of Italy, the mountain range the dwarves lived in as well as the woods the elves lived in both at about the size of Romania, the large desert taking up at least half of Alagaësia as about twice the size of Iceland, and the independent nation of Surda as the size of Denmark. Very cool that Shinobaka was able to figure out these real-world figures. As I stated at the top of this post, I am using the same tactics when building Gyateara - using real world figures of what I want and then transfer those stats in to my world.

However, the ability to find real-world correlations also gave Shinobaka the ammunition to attack Paolini's inability to thoroughly think through the logistics of what he wrote. For starters, the army that attacked Surda - most likely just a portion of the entire Empire's available military - was larger than virtually any in human history. Especially when coupled with the Medieval Age, which is the closest to resembling life in Alagaësia.
[Most] of the examples of armies [the same size Paolini gave in Eldest] come from the Muslim world, which at its smallest controlled an area at least seven or eight times that of Galbatorix's empire.
Shinobaka continued by attacking the general population density of Alagaësia.
The closest population figure yielded by a quick internet search was one of about 5-7 million people in England circa 1300. Since the Empire is somewhat larger than England, we can estimate its population at about 8-9 million, making Galbatorix's draft seem like 100,000 men were taken from New York City overnight...

There are a total of ten large cities in the Empire, including the capitol, and five smaller population centers. Simply put, this is a ridiculously under-populated country. Going by the apparent technology levels of the humans, Alagaësia seems to be about on par with Europe circa the 11th century, yet maps of the British Isles circa 802 AD, Italy circa 1050 AD, and even Greece circa 362 BC show much greater population density.... The population density...that most closely resembles [The Empire] is the island of Sicily circa 1050, which is [smaller than Surda]. A country that coincidentally has six major cities despite being a fraction of the Empire's size.

Couple this with the five major dwarven cities and the six major elven cities, and...[Galbatorix] is pretty well outnumbered.
The second article that I printed out as a bit of a warning of "what not to do" was the Wikipedia article about Alagaësia itself. Some time between 2008 and today, the individual article about Paolini's main continent was taken down in favor for a more broad article about the book series itself. However, I do still have that print out of the original article, and on the first page it has yet another pitfall: possible proof that Paolini didn't pay too much attention to our world when creating his own - either that or he wanted his just THAT fantastical...
The Beor Mountains are the tallest mountains in Alagaësia, being over ten miles high (nearly twice as tall as Mount Everest, the tallest mountain on Earth)....
So Paolini has an entire mountain range that is - according to Shinobaka's calculations - about the size of Romania, and every last one of them are not only taller than Everest, but nearly TWICE as tall. It makes me wonder if the man just threw large numbers out to make everything seem daunting without actually taking the time to note how plausible such numbers were.

As much as I know these pitfalls, and as critically attentive to details as I am, I still fear that I'll make the same mistakes. Someone will point out that my towns are too close to - are too far from - each other, or the rivers aren't flowing properly, or that the population is too small or too large. There will be something I'll forget about since there is SO MUCH RESEARCHING I'll need to do to figure out the real-world correlation.

And I SUCK at research. Always have. I always seem to find the hardest and longest route to find the information I want. I'll spend five hours on Google trying to figure something out, and then Hubby will swing by my computer, type in one thing, and BOOM the answer I need.

However, even if I do manage to get my world built and it feels authentic, there's still that original fear of it being a derivative of some other better-known work. Even in the criticism section of Inheritance Cycle's Wikipedia entry there is a listing of people noting the series being little more than a rehashing of stories such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Dune.

Who's to say my works won't be the same way? Especially when most of them DO start off as fanfiction. I mean, the story I originally built Gyateara for was nothing more than a massive hybrid of stealing components from the first Fable, Ocarina of Time, Inu Yasha, Vision of Escaflowne, and Fushigi Yuugi. There was even a very subtle bit of inspiration from friggen The Little Mermaid.

Yes, authors do get inspired by other works around them. It's common practice. It's one of the main reasons people don't read fanfiction of their work if it's ongoing; they don't want to unintentionally be influenced by a good story they read.

However, how do I know I'll be able to keep it at being INSPIRED by these components and not end up like Paolini - writing a story with blatant influences from the source material?

All I can really do is know what to avoid, and pray the daunting task of actually avoiding it won't keep me frozen for too much longer...

What about you guys? What is your fear about your work? What's keep you chained in place? Let me know in the comments section. Maybe stating our fear will help us overcome it.

Finishing NaNo!

First thing's first:

NOVEMBER 25TH – SUNDAY
The Thanksgiving vacation is now over. We were all packed up and ready to head out the door by noon. The extent of my writing time was used to finish up my blog post for last week before our drive home.
The drive itself was a bit chaotic. My sister followed me up in her car; with her dog driving her insane the whole way. The drive is already about 4hrs long, but with the holiday traffic we were stuck in stop-and-go whenever we got near a city. Plus, about an hour from the house my sister’s speed sensor or whatever broke on her car and she was terrified she had done something to her transmission. So I had to calm my sister, tag team between her and my mom to figure out what we should do, and then drove below the speed limit with our hazards on the rest of the way. The full trip took about six hours to complete.
I then entertained my sister to get her mind off her car, and then I unpacked. There was no way I was going to write anything. Sheesh!

NOVEMBER 26TH – MONDAY
Day two of entertaining my sister. I talked her in to taking her car to my mechanic and spent the rest of the day with Hubby, his BFF, and celestialTyrant. Sis threw a mini-party with snacks and pigs-in-a-blanket. It was fun chaos to have everyone over, but chaos also means yet again not having any time to write. Sugar! :-P

NOVEMBER 27TH – TUESDAY
So the mechanic called my sister to let her know that her speed sensor has indeed died, but as long as she doesn't push her car she should be able to use her GPS to track her speed and make it home safe. She can then get the sensor replaced by the dealership itself. Happy to have her car back, we took a trip to Walmart to pick up a few things so she could throw a second mini-party to celebrate her car being fine and CT being able to visit a second day in a row. Aaaaaaaaand then we get in our cars to drive home.... and her car wouldn't properly shift without the sensor. Terrified that she'd blow her transmission, we again dropped the car off at the mechanic's and once again I had to deal with an overly emotional sister. Thankfully, CT really helped calm her down.
Sis also got a call from the mechanic later in the day. He could get a new sensor for her. He'd bump her in front of all of his other customers so he could make sure her car was fixed by 2pm tomorrow so she could make it home in time to get back to work first thing Thursday.
With all the extra chaos, yet another writing-free day.... :-P

NOVEMBER 28TH – WEDNESDAY
Continuing the November theme of being grateful, I have to have list some things I've been thankful for this week.
1 - CT being able to visit for the third day in a row. His visits really helped calm my sister down.
2 - The mechanic doing everything he could to make sure my sister could make it home safe - and never once charged her! I'll talk more about that in a moment.
3 - Sis being able to visit in the first place! Yay!
4 - BEING ABLE TO WRITE AGAIN after a week away from the computer.
Let's start with the car saga. Sis gets a call first thing in the morning to find out that the mechanic tried calling everywhere and couldn't get the sensor, so YET AGAIN sister is a wreck wondering how she was making it home. So we started off the day with her going BACK to the mechanic so he could teach her how to drive an automatic car like it's a standard to make sure it shifts. After CT calmed her and she had one last mini panic attack right as she left she managed to make it home with no trouble at all.
But when it comes to writing, well I got an hour in first thing in the morning. I dropped Hubby off at work and then wrote while waiting for Sis to wake up. I then wrote for another hour after Sis went home. Not terribly too much, but it was better than nothing!

NOVEMBER 29TH – THURSDAY
Blockaded myself in my room for a few hours to try to catch up on my writing. I wanted to at least finish off my chapter so I had one for today's update. I got an amazing 2600+ words written! Hazzah for basil pesto hummus!!!!!

NOVEMBER 30TH – FRIDAY
The last day of NaNo. With some encouragement from Ali Luke I decided to try for half-NaNo; 25000 words. After yesterday's mad dash I only need 1400. My thing though is that I had a major issue with my characters just doing their own thing. For instance, Connor flipping out unnecessarily and apparently disappearing for a month. Now I needed to figure out how to get him back in to the story. :-P Also, I needed to figure out how Natalie discovers that she can see the jewel shards. Both issues completely halted my creativity. As of 9pm I still hadn't written anything!
After a mini-break down I blockaded myself in our room with more hummus. I was slowly word counting after each chapter. It was almost an hour of "write a paragraph, see if it's enough, than write another paragraph, see if THAT is enough, etc." I finally hit 25010, but then realized I only needed about 200 more words to hit my 1667 daily word count. After 1400 words 200 shouldn't be too much more to write. I then wrote 1730 words by the end of the day, only to discover that if I wrote 20 more I would be able to "roll over" the extra words to finish off one of the days where I only needed 30-some words to hit the 1667 daily count. By the time I finished the day it was about 11pm - when I have to go to work at 7am tomorrow - and 25,360 words in my novel!
I'm no where even STARTED in the main portion of my plot, and I only wrote on 15 days of the year. So if I had written daily I probably COULD have hit the 50,000 words and get about 1/2 way through my tale. It will be a while before I can go back to finish the story, but I'll let everyone know when I go back.
My goal is to convert everything in to a script so it's easier for me to organize my thoughts. Most of my words were description of the world of Gyateara and the magic used - which works with NaNo's goal to write as much as possible, but doesn't work for a polished story. With the script I could streamline and then switch back to prose once I have everything - including character personalities - figured out.
I also want to read through Rick Riordan's "Heroes of Olympus" series as well as Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle in order to get a better idea of how to describe the world/magic of Gyateara.
Before I work on finishing this story, however, I have the following writing goals:
1 - Supposedly there will be another Hey Arnold writing contest, this time with a Christmas theme, so I'll have to start thinking about what I want to write for that.
2 - I want to get back to working on What Is Truly Meant To Be after not updating in MONTHS.
3 - I want to see if I can get back to the second half of the July Daily Challenges.
4 - ChibiSunnie and I want to get back to working on our fanscript for The Jungle Movie.
We'll see how long it takes to get back to this story.....

DECEMBER 1ST – SATURDAY
I took a writing break! 'Nuff said!

DECEMBER 2ND – SUNDAY
As mentioned at the top of this post: IT'S THE HUBBY'S BIRTHDAY!
With all the other writing - and lack of writing ability - this week I wasn't able to write this blog post prior to today, which is why it's late.... So, so late....

Oh well, I'm off to celebrate Hubby's birthday before I have to go to work at 3:30. In the meantime, enjoy the TWO chapters I wrote this week! Go me!

Thanksgiving Week Was A Bust

NOVEMBER 18TH – SUNDAY
I managed to plow through another 300+ words in the break room at work tonight! Yes, it’s not terribly impressive to write 300 words in 15 minutes, but it’s something, and it’s faster than I have been writing lately. Actually, the characters sort of took over this time and I went in to an all-out word sprint! I actually was almost late getting back from break because of it. Maybe it was the basil pesto hummus I was eating. :-D
Anyway, I discovered two things about my characters. The first being that Connor has one heck of an anger problem. I’ll have to wrangle that in during the re-write. I mean, he’s allowed to have issues given his background, but I didn’t expect him to go off on the Guildmaster like he did – and he went off on poor Natalie too. Poor girl. Speaking of Natalie, I also discovered that I totally forgot a key component I wanted for her personality. Therefore, she’d probably react way different than she has been. Gah…. Whoops.

NOVEMBER 19TH – MONDAY
I managed to finish off chapter 5! Actually, after last night’s word sprint I only needed another 100 words or so. Well, with all the Thanksgiving chaos of this week it’s good to know that my secondary goal of posting a new chapter every week is still going strong. I just wish I could keep up the weekly update momentum when I switch back over to my Hey Arnold story. It’s doubtful though since the Hey Arnold chapters are about 3x the size of the ones for this NaNo story. However, perhaps I can finally get in to that monthly update rhythm I always wanted to accomplish with this story.
Anyway, back to NaNo.
I chewed through another thousand-some words in the break room first thing this morning. I brought Hubby in to work an hour before my shift started, so I just stuck around and typed. Not only did I finish the most recent chapter – as I just stated – but I got a nice chunk of today’s writing done. Sadly, I still ended up about 500 words shy for the day. Just add them to the pile I guess.
See, I had people talking to me in the break room when I was on my actual break during my shift, so I didn’t get any writing done then. When I came home I discovered that Cyhyr and her boyfriend were finally visiting again! We haven’t seen them in like a month! So I hung out with them for a little while, Cyhyr Tumblred with me. Then, celestialTyrant showed up. We were supposed to all go out to eat, but since CT and Cyhyr’s boyfriend haven’t seen each other in ages they decided to play a game or two of Magic.
By the time all that chaos ended, Cyhyr and her boyfriend left to get food and head home, and CT was finally ready for us to eat it was past 9pm! I NEVER eat dinner that late! Plus, I had been hungry for over five hours, but kept avoiding eating anything because we were supposed to go out “any minute now”.
So CT insists we all pile in to his car as we say “screw it” to our original plans of hitting up the Chinese buffet and just go to Taco Bell. Then CT gets a flat. For the second time in about as many months he has a problem with one of his tires going flat due to a faulty valve stem. Plus the lugnuts are on too tight for anyone to loosen them enough for CT to put his donut on. Which means, in the cold, perhaps a 1/4mile from my house – which isn’t so bad except it’s a long steep hill leading back home – we now have to walk back to my house so we can drive to a local store, and buy an air compressor so CT can fill his tire enough to get him to an auto shop to get his tire fixed. We walked the few yards to the McDonald’s – because we were just too hungry at that point – bought our food, and then I noticed that I was going to be late getting back to watch Castle. This is the one show I NEVER miss a new airing! So instead of eating in the McDonald’s to warm up, we practically sprint back to the house so I can eat and watch my show.
Good thing CT was going to be crashing at our place until Wednesday anyway.

NOVEMBER 20TH – TUESDAY
While Hubby and I were at work CT hit up my in-laws to help him get his car mended. So now he’s all set. He also knew how stressed I’ve been about how disastrous our house is, so he offered to help clean. I’m still incredibly embarrassed that anyone even HAD to offer, let alone actually following through with it. However, I’m super grateful for his help and the fact that he’d volunteer in the first place.
He did simple things while we were gone, like cleaning up all of the Magic cards still all over the table from the night before. Then, when I got home at about 1:00 I started to wash the massive pile of dishes – I’m not joking when I say almost every dish we own was in the sink – while I instructed CT on what other elements of the house needed to be organized.
We did end up hitting up that Chinese buffet after picking Hubby up from work at 5, but the rest of the day was cleaning some more. The only writing I accomplished was a little shy of 200 words during my break.

NOVEMBER 21ST – WEDNESDAY
More massive cleaning and work. My hands are disasters from being in water all the time, so CT offered to finish off the last of the dishes while I finished organizing the stuff that he would have no clue where to put away – even I didn’t know where to put it.
We got the house actually looking presentable by the time the in-laws made it to the house. Go us! We had an…. interesting…. dinner. All-in-all it was a fantastic day. Not one for writing though.

NOVEMBER 22ND – THURSDAY
Thanksgiving!
I went to work while Hubby and his mother cleaned up after last night’s dinner. Then Hubby did the packing. I got home, showered, ate, and then we sprinted out the door. Made it to my mom’s at about 8pm. We ate the left overs of the Thanksgiving dinner Mom and Sis made. We watched some TV as we bonded. And then we crashed.
Worse part is that I completely forgot to grab my laptop when I went in to work. I was going to just use some paper I left in the break room, but of course I also forgot my pen! *sigh* So much for writing even at work.

NOVEMBER 23RD – FRIDAY
As predicted, I spent the entire day with my husband, mom, and sister. We hit up Walmart – not for Black Friday shopping, we just needed lights – and then we decorated the house. We cooked more food to add to yesterday’s leftovers and had a “proper” Thanksgiving dinner while watching a movie. I attempted to write, but every time I got distracted.

NOVEMBER 24TH – SATURDAY
Couldn’t sleep too well. My old bed was too small for both of us. So at about 6:30 I gave up and just went in to the living room to write. I wanted to quickly catch up on these blog updates since I haven’t even taken the time to do that over the past few days. I then discovered that the word document that I use to periodically update throughout the week ended up virtually blank! Nothing I’ve written since Sunday was in the document! Sooooo my early morning writing turned in to re-writing everything you read up to this point. Awesome.
So instead of my morning being spent on NaNo it was spent on this blog update... whoops.
The rest of the day was spent at the family gathering, and so there was no writing done yet again.

NOVEMBER 25TH – SUNDAY
Because of the mini-vacation we didn't need to wake up at 1am to drop Hubby off at work! Whoot! So I got to sleep, and pseudo sleep in. The whole family once again hung out while I finished up this post and updated my NaNo story. Plus now my sister is following us up and spending three days with us at our place before she starts up her 7-days-a-week job leading up to Christmas. So it's perfectly clear that I'm not getting much farther in my story, but it was a valiant effort I guess. Sure, the story won't even be getting started really, but perhaps I'll have one last chapter update next week.

Happy Halloween!

A Happy Halloween to everyone!

Those of you that were in the path of Hurricane Sandy’s Frankenstorm, how did you fair? Is everyone alright? Dry? With power?

As promised, I’m giving you this last blog update before I start on my grand journey in to the chaos known as National Novel Writing Month – or NaNoWriMo for short… NaNo for those of us that are super lazy. Are you reading this on my normal Sunday Update Day instead of Halloween when it was posted? Were you out of power/internet until now? If you answered “Yes” to the first question but “No” to the second, was it because you didn’t know I updated? You can make sure you read my posts the day I publish them by following this blog via blogger – I can let you guys know how if need be, just drop a comment below – signing up for the email updates – they’re not spammy and just drop the post conveniently in an email – follow me on Twitter @LycoRogue, or follow me on my facebook page. I’m actually thinking of also starting up one of those Fan Pages or whatever on Facebook. What do you guys think?

Anyway, I think I made progress with some of my planning for my upcoming story. It’s still the awesomely lame working title of “Massive Hybric Crossover Fanfic” but at least my female lead finally has a name: Natalie Myers.

I’m also in the process of filling out the Writing Checklist bullet points brought up in Larry Brooks’ StoryFix blog post. I think I’m doing pretty well. I’m confident so far that I can at least crank out a few chapters in the next month – even if I don’t make that 50k word goal.

This brings me to my next great announcement: My Personal NaNo Goal.

I will still blog during the month! I’ll do the Diary updates like what I do for Script Frenzy, but it will be during my weekly updates instead of my normal end-of-the-month one. Also, I am aiming to have at least one new chapter done by the time I update each week, so aside from knowing how I’m doing you can also read my horrendous updates! It won’t be pretty, but it will hopefully keep me accountable when it comes to my writing.

Finally, before I leave, I'm beyond psyched to announce:
CHIBISUNNIE HAS POSTED HER VERY FIRST STORY!!!!
I personally think she did so well and that I've got some competition in this Halloween contest. ;D

Go check out my awesome beta's work and let her know what you think!

Expanding My Fandoms

As promised, due to missing a week, and said weeks being insanely filled, I am now gifting my beloved readers with a second blog update. The original post just would have gone on forever in a ramble if I kept it all as one, but I wanted to talk about everything, and thus this second post! YAY!

So if you haven't read my first post for this week, it's here.

Now, typically this blog goes on endlessly about my love for Hey Arnold! and all the fanfiction I write for it. It's rare that my readers hear mention of any other fandom. Yet the last post was mostly discussing X-Men, and this post shall continue that thought.

Ever since Hubby set up Netflix, we marathoned any and all X-Men cartoons available on Netflix, and Hubby set up the RPG; you guys have read minor mentions of the fandom here and there.

Yet, spending all that time describing both Lia and Cajun to Neghya really re-sparked my interest in X-Men. I'll admit, it's mainly because I had to do so much research on Gambit - and refreshed my memory on how awesomely suave, charming, and ruggedly handsome Gambit is.

I mean, I had legitimately forgot how epic Gambit is, and was quickly reminded as I flipped through pictures on DeviantArt and Tumblr. I drooled. I got hot and bothered. I screamed out "HOW ARE YOU SO AWESOME!?" I was hooked.

As I mentioned in the last post, this revival of my X-Men interest lead me to hop on to YouTube to search for videos of Gambit. I mainly focused on the Gambit from X-Men: Evolution, since that incarnation would be the version that is Cajun's father. Man, as much as I always have and always will love the 90's X-Men cartoon and it's version of Gambit, I think the Evolution Gambit is about equal. Goodness, was he hot for a cartoon character! Plus, his charisma and the way he played off Rogue.... *drool*

So I obsessively watched X-Men Evolution - mainly any and all Gambit scenes - for the next day or two. I also sent Neghya my two favorite interactions Hubby and I had between Cajun and Lia. I love them so much I'll put them here too:

Chayse first interacts with Lia (whom he's been watching from afar for the past two months she has been at the institute) at the "Back to School" mixer and he asks her to dance. She agrees (charisma FTW), and is then embarrassed when her father surprises her as the new school librarian. Jamie (Lia's dad) uses his mutant ability to duplicate himself so there are now three of him standing over Lia. The three Jamies all dote over her and gush about how much time they'll spend together (super overprotective and super embarrassing), and then the Jamies start talking sternly to Chayse - who was just about to kiss Lia when Jamie interrupted. Lia gets frustrated with her overprotective father and Chayse doesn't help matters by mentioning how adorable Lia's butt is.

Lia storms off and Chayse follows her. Lia quickly turns around, stopping Chayse's advance. She starts poking him in the chest, "OOOOh no, Mister! You are causing enough trouble for me as it is! I finally had time away from Dad and as soon as you hit on me there he is! In triplicate!"

Chayse smirks as he allows Lia to continue poking him. In an instant he uses his powers to phase through her arm, sneak a quick kiss, phase the rest of the way through her, and then walk away. "Call me sometime, Chère, I'm looking forward to seeing you again."

Yup, Chayse not only stole THEIR first kiss, but LIA'S first kiss... She was excited and pissed at the same time.

Then there's the next interaction these two have. Lia runs in to Chayse in the hall...

When Lia sees Chayse she bites her lip and plays with the orange streaks running through the lower layer of her hair - both actions are normal ticks of hers when she's nervous. With a deep breath, she continues down the hall and tries to act cool. As she passes Chayse she avoids eye contact and places a hand on his chest, keeping him at arm's length. "Don't try doing that phasing bullshit again. And you better not make any more trouble for me."

Chase cocks his head and watches Lia pass. With a knowing smile, he takes out a deck of cards and starts shuffling them as he follows her down the hall. "Sorry 'bout the mixer, got caught up in the moment and was hypnotized by your beauty. I'll make it up to you sometime." He does a little jog to get in front of Lia and starts walking backwards, fanning out his deck, "Pick a card?"

She purses her lips and eyes up the Cajun. With a questioning glare Lia reaches out and selects a card.

Chayse gives a charming smile and shuffles the rest of the deck, "Don't need to do the rest of the trick to know that you took my ace of hearts."

Lia blushes as a smirk creeps on to her lips. Out of curiosity, she checks the card and is shocked to see that Chayse is actually right: Ace of Hearts.
"Alright, I'll admit that was kinda smooth."
She turns the card around to show it to him, "And had a bit of slight of hand involved I'd wager."

She holds out the card for him to take back, but he puts his hand around hers and pushes it gently back against her chest. "You can keep it,  Chère, I took something from you so the least I can do is give you something of mine."

Lia blushes harder and pulls her hand away to tuck the card in her pocket, "Alright, Cajun, you might not be so bad after all."
MAN! Is my husband smooth or what!? Now does everyone understand why I married this man!? Cajun is Hubby's suave side personified... COMPLETELY! XD

Now that I went back and sent those blips to Neghya, my desire to translate the RPG in to web comics is even stronger. Too bad I can't draw...

I also wanted to revive the game since Hubby's friends have the tendency to go full throttle in to a game, and then quickly fizzle back out. Barely anyone has done anything the past month. Now that my desire to play is revived, I spent most of Tuesday and Wednesday trying to think up plot points that Hubby could use to try to bring people back to the game.

Both of us are posting everywhere, trying to get people to interact. I actually had fun coming up with long posts for my secondary character Willow. She's a trickster and is currently trying to seduce a classmate in to using his morphing abilities to help her pull pranks around the school... We'll see how it goes.

But X-Men isn't the only fandom I'm now re-fixated with.

There is this one scene in X-Men: Evolution that makes me squee like the little Fangirl I am. Rogue is brainwashed and attacks all of the main mutants introduced in Evolution. One of the last mutants being Gambit. The rest of the cast - the X-Men, the Brotherhood, Magneto's Acolytes, even Magneto himself - were all pretty easy for Rogue to take down. However, Gambit actually manages to put up a fight, lasting longer than everyone else. Rogue finally subdues him and takes his power by using the element of surprise: she quickly kisses him on the lips.

This scene reminded me of a similar scene in another show I used to love. A scene where the main female cast member is also brainwashed/possessed, also takes out a group of people by a simple touch of her hand, and also finally tries to take out one of the males by kissing him instead of simply touching him like the others. I'm talking about the second episode of Extreme Ghostbusters.

Kylie is this five-foot-nothin' gothic girl who is currently possessed by a plague-spreading demon. Kylie spreads the disease with a simple touch. Eduardo is a tall, lanky, slacker who likes to think himself a lady's man. He's also a bit of a coward, and so while the other two members of the revived Ghostbusters team - Roland and Garret - go off to try to find the ghost spreading the disease, Eduardo stays behind "in case Egon calls." While Eduardo is all alone and defenseless, Kylie walks up to him WITH HER HANDS BEHIND HER BACK and leans in close to him - trying to coax him in to kissing her. SHE COULD HAVE EASILY TOUCHED HIM AND INFECTED HIM AT ANY TIME!!!!

This scene - and other Eduardo/Kylie moments - got me thinking about a mini-essay I wrote back in high school when I used to watch the show religiously. It was basically an episode by episode evaluation of Kylie and Eduardo's relationship throughout the insanely short-lived series. Using examples from nearly every episode, I gave definitive proof that Eduardo is in love with Kylie - and was at least attracted to her from the moment they met; and that Kylie at the very least was attracted to Eduardo by the end of the series. The show ended too soon to showcase whether or not Kylie had any strong romantic interests in Eduardo.

All of the re-watching of the Extreme Ghostbusters episodes - especially all the Eduardo/Kylie moments - plus thinking of my old essay also got me thinking of a fanfic I was attempting back in 2008 when I first re-introduced myself to the show. I didn't get very far with the story, thankfully.

I reread it on Thursday. It's by no means awful, but it's also not all that good either... It's workable, but I'm not entirely sure how to rework what I already have. I'm pretty positive I have Eduardo's voice down, but I'm not convinced I properly characterized the rest of the cast. I just might take a break from Hey Arnold! to work on this fanfic; see where it goes. Regardless, I'm thinking complete re-write of what I have.

Here's a snippet that I'm actually happy with, but I think I need to tweak Kylie's dialect some more to sound like her:
Eduardo was passed out on the couch and let out a large snore. “Ug,” Kylie moaned, “Can’t we turn him off or somethin’?”

Garrett’s eyes lit up and the corners of his lips curled into a smirk. Kylie just gave him the perfect idea for ending his boredom. He wheeled himself over to Eduardo’s side, placing both Eduardo and the couch between him and Kylie.

“Hey, Kylie,” he called over a little louder than he needed to, “I heard a rumor today. Wanna hear it?”

“Not particularly,” Kylie replied softly as she took another bite of her sandwich.

“The rumor is about you,” Garrett dangled the carrot. On cue, Eduardo stirred and his face started to frown. Kylie didn’t get the hint, however.

“Don’t care,” She took another bite.

Garrett puffed out his chest. All this time and Kylie still wouldn’t play along with him. He tried again. “Heard you had a date tonight,” he emphasized the word “date” and made sure to lean into Eduardo a little bit. He nearly got smacked when Eduardo jumped awake. Garrett stifled his laughter. At least he accomplished his task of waking the Latino.

“Well you heard wrong,” Kylie responded, still not allowing herself to be roped in to whatever Garrett had cooking, even if she was relieved that Eduardo’s snoring stopped.

“Come on, Kylie,” Garrett returned his voice to a softer tone, “admit that you have a date tonight. Cute guy too, I heard.” He nodded towards Eduardo, trying to give her some sort of signal.

“What?” Eduardo squeaked, trying to understand the conversation going on around him.

She ignored Garrett’s signal and finished her sandwich. “I said I don’t have a date. Besides, even if I did, why would I feel the need to broadcast it to you?”

It wasn’t much, but Garrett would take it. “Sounds like a confession to me. Right, Eddy?” He nudged his poor disoriented friend.

“Doesn’t sound like nuttin’to me,” Eduardo pouted.

“This guy must be really hot for you to keep him from us.” Garrett continued, “What? You’re afraid we’d scare him off?”

Kylie was tired of this. She stormed over to the paraplegic and leaned in so their eyes met. At a solid five feet tall, Kylie didn’t have to bend too far to accomplish her goal. “I said,” her tone was rough as she slowly talked, purposely punctuating each word in hopes to end this farce. “I. Don’t. Have. A. Date!” She flared her arms with the last word and stomped towards the stairs.

“Guess she doesn’t have a date,” Eduardo smiled to the slightly shaken Garrett.

Before Kylie reached the stairs, the alarm went off. Someone had called the Ghostbusters for help. She detoured for the fire pole instead.

“What have I always said about your snoring being too loud to hear the phone?” Garrett joked as he wheeled himself towards the disability lift.

“Yeah, yeah,” Eduardo rolled his eyes, “you’re real funny.”
The most basic of plot descriptions for this fanfic is as follows:
The main ghost in my fanfic feeds on jealous energy. This ghost - which manifests itself as a spider - bites Eduardo and turns him in to a Hulk-like monster, but the transformation is fueled by jealousy instead of rage. The ghost then shapeshifts in to a handsome, Australian, college student, and woos Kylie - in an effort to make Eduardo jealous so the ghost can feed off the energy. It works, Eduardo Jealous-Rages, the ghost becomes strong off of the energy, and the Ghostbusters are helpless to stop it. Kylie is kidnapped King Kong style and it's discovered that the only way to weaken the ghost enough to capture it is to calm Eduardo's jealousy. Kylie finally gives up fighting her feelings, confesses to Eduardo that she likes him back, Eduardo changes mostly back in to a human, and the rest of the XGB capture the weakened ghost. There is a bit of a Beauty and the Beast thing where Kylie's kiss is the only way to fully transform Eduardo back in to a human and "heal" the ghost's bite.

Super cheesy, I know... it's the Hopeless Romantic in me... Anyway, I tried to use elements already established in the show to make it feel more "canon". For instance, the "Eduardo gets bitten and is turned by a ghost" is established in "Killjoys", as is the concept of ghosts "feeding" off emotion - in "Killjoys" the ghosts focus on laughter. The "Ecto-induced Transformation" that Eduardo undergoes - therefore making the proton shots harmful to him - is established in "Witchy Women". Janine at the end of the story convinces Kylie to confess to Eduardo because of references to the episode "The Crawling" in which Janine gets transformed in to a bug creature and can only have her humanity returned by Egon confessing his feelings for her. The "Beauty and the Beast" transformation is also partially inspired by another show I loved when writing the fanfic: InuYasha, in which Kagome is the only one capable of calming InuYasha when he is fully demonic.

Aaaaaand, speaking of InuYasha, while trying to find the XGB fanfic I just described I managed to find another fanfic I nearly forgot about. It's actually a massive hybrid/cross-over fanfic that takes elements from at least four different sources.

The main source is the Xbox game "Fable". The setting and basic history, as well as the basic background of the male lead, are all based on the game. The secondary source is Legend of Zelda. Then there are elements - mainly character traits - taken from Escaflowne, Tomb Raider, InuYasha, and Fushigi Yuugi. That story is a touch too complicated to explain simply. Therefore, I'll have to restrain from giving you a preview of that story right now, especially since this blog post is long enough as it is.

Switching gears over to roleplaying, I did Character Creation on Friday for yet another vampire character for Hubby's BFF's newest game. This time I actually started as a human and we roleplayed my character's embrace. It was violent, it was forced, my poor character was left to fend for herself, and she was clueless of what she became. Boy, was the poor girl freaked when she killed two bums while feeding, and felt like she landed in the Twilight Zone when she was informed that Vampires were not only real, but she was one. It was so much fun reacting to that news! I was "meh" about her at first, but developing a freshly-turned vamp might be lots of fun!

Already I kinda want to write a story based on her - sort of transcribing the game so others can enjoy. ^_^

On top of all these other writing ideas, I'm excited about another possibility. Now, in my birthday post I was listing all the gifts that DarkAngel1326 was giving me, but I didn't get my fourth gift in time to let you guys know what it was. Turns out the picture she drew me was a precursor for another short story she wrote for me. She wrote out my favorite scene in The Familiar of Zero, but starring Arnold and Helga. She did a really good job too!

So now I'm thinking we should join forces to elaborate on my "Spellbound" short story and collaboratively write a Familiar of Zero/Hey Arnold! crossover. The closest I've come to a collab story before was the script where I met ChibiSunnie, but for that it was more that she gave the broad plot ideas and I did the writing. With DA1326 I think we would be jointly writing, and I think it would be kinda cool to see how to best do something like that over the internet.

We already discussed how we love when PinkLotus27 collabs with someone they come up with a joint name. For instance, when she was still BrokenRose24 and would collab with NintendoGal55 their stories would be posted under the name BrokenNintendo. Likewise, when NintendoGal55 collabs with SuprSingr - who has a fantastically popular HA! story out right now - their penname is SuperNintendo. After a quick discussion DA and I decided that we'll post the collab under the name DarkRogue! XD YAY! But if we collab on something super-duper fluffy we might switch it up to LycoAngel. So I guess you guys can keep an eventual eye out for that!

In the meantime, I just don't know what direction I want to go with my writing!
  • Get back to working on "What Is Truly Meant To Be"
  • Go back and work on the rest of the July Daily Challenges
  • Get to work on my Hey Arnold/Familiar of Zero cross-over
    • Either alone, or as that joint effort with DarkAngel1326
  • Go back and re-work my XGB fanfic
  • Get started on my Vamp story
  • Go hard-core with my X-Men RPing

Do you guys have a preference? Feel free to let me know in the comments below. ^_^

Well, I hope this appeases my readers that missed out on an update last Sunday. We'll see next week what I do with my vast writing options.
