And Thus the Tale of the Stardancer Crew Begins

Well, looks like my prediction that I would have to skip last week's post because of work proved correct. That's a bummer, because I started working on this post last Monday, in hopes that I'd get the post written before bed, edited before/during work, and published at some point last Tuesday. The fact that I missed that post update despite actually putting in the effort to get it done on time hurts a bit, especially after the weekend of the 13th. But I'll get to that in a minute.

Generated by Bitmoji

I said last update that I still had a large list of things I didn't get around to writing about before the post got overwhelming. I also said I had intended on continuing with that list this post.

Yeah.... I decided against that.

Most of it was centered on my writing (or... lack thereof, if I'm honest). I was going to talk about Plagg Appreciation Day on Friday the 13th, the first one since November. I was then going to talk about how - minus the plot points I'm coming up with for Scum and Villainy - I haven't written anything in 3 months. Significantly fewer months than when I was in a dry spell leading into the last Plagg Appreciation Day, but still a painfully long time. That would have lead me to talk about the last story I did write, how popular it seems to be, and how that popularity appears to be largely due to MostLovedGirl linking to my story at the end of her story (which had inspired my story in the first place).

I'm still not entirely sure how to take those stats, though. Do I see it as proof that I am a good writer, and I'm only hidden in obscurity because there's such a large flood of stories that people just don't find my work in the first place? Probably. I'm sure all of you fine folks are sitting there screaming at your respective screens that is exactly the case.

Despite that, though, of course my mind made me equally wonder if the only reason the story gets the love it does is because MLG is promoting it, and because it's mostly based on her story. So people only really like it because it's her story still... just... zoomed in for a scene she didn't get into. A little less than a quarter of readers who have left kudos on both Could Your Paradise Also Be Your Hell? and Remember That Time When... (so, the best indication I have that they are readers coming from MLG's story) also left me kudos on my other stories. The number shrinks more if you take out those usernames I recognize as already being repeat readers of mine, and further still once you remove those who only left kudos on one other story other than CYPABYH. Even among those readers that left kudos only on my story, about 32% had either went on to leave kudos on at least one other story, or they were already readers of mine that already had.

Take the group as a whole, and just over a quarter of them - 26% - left me kudos on at least one other story of mine, most of those, though, were usernames I recognized as already had left me those kudos before I published CYPABYH.

In other words, my story didn't seem to get many people to go, "ooo. I have to check out more of her work!" So, if I'm honest, larger than a small part of me still believes that CYPABYH's popularity is very much because of the tie to MLG's story, and not because of its own merit.

I guess I'm stuck in this mindset because, with the rare exception (like, one or two people), no one seems to like my stories enough to suggest them to anyone else in the fandom. (Sorry, that sounds salty to my amazing readers. I promise I'm not hating on any of you or trying to guilt trip you into promoting my work for me. This is a "me" problem. I promise.) See, there are other stories that grab readers more intensely than mine seem to, and so whenever there's those "suggested reads" lists, there's a variety of other stories that pop up, but never mine. My stories - or even just me as an author - never seem to come to mind when someone is creating their "OMG you HAVE to read this story/author's works! It's/they're amazing!" list.

Similarly, I've had friends comment about reviews they've received, or I've seen these types of reviews myself on fanfics I enjoy, in which reviewers remark on how much the story personally affected them. The story saved them when they were in a terrible depression, or it helped them through a rough time in their life, or it's one of the most authentic historical stories they've read, or the story depicts mental health the most realistic, or the concept is the most unique plot, or an update was the greatest unintentional birthday gift they could receive. My stories don't get reviews like those.

People seem to enjoy my work well enough, and I do get the loveliest comments on them. Again, I don't mean to shade any of my readers or the love they HAVE showered on me. It means the world to me, and I routinely reread them to remind myself that my work is indeed enjoyed. I just don't know if any of my stories STICK with my readers. If my stories differentiate themselves from the rest of the pack enough. If I have readers who will reread my stories over and over and over again. If my stories have any sort of staying power.

I've tried backtracking this meme, but I can't find the original post.
If anyone knows where this originated, please let me know.

Yes, I know, I know. I need to remember this meme, keep working hard, and have faith. Don't compare myself to others. Maybe my time to pop just hasn't happened yet. I just need to keep waiting. The hot oil might feel rough, and I may wonder if I'll always stay a shelled kernel, but I have to trust.

It's hard though. Despite reminding myself that perhaps I just haven't "popped" yet, I still wonder if I ever will. Am I destined to be one of those unpopped kernels left at the bottom of the bowl/bag? Will I EVER be able to hold my own - no promotions from an author of a well-loved fanfic - like so many other fanfic writers? Let alone if/when I eventually publish professionally? If I can't build a platform with free stories, how can I be sure that I'll get it once people have to pay for them?

I'm going on a bit of a spiral here - one that missing a blog post update, even when I prepared to have it done ahead of time, doesn't help - which is actually one of the main reasons I decided to scrap the rest of that bulleted list from two weeks ago.

Especially since I "failed" on Friday 13, so talking about my writing right now probably isn't the best idea.

Yes, I know that I'm the only one to look at not posting a new story on the 13th as a failure since there was no true obligation, and readers will appreciate any writing I post, once I do. However, I couldn't help but fall into a funk as the weekend came and went, and there was no new Plagg-centric story for Plagg Appreciation Day.

I started this little fandom tradition 2 years ago, and, until this month, I've hit all 4 Friday 13's since 2019. It's not like people follow me enough for this to ever be an actual fandom event like MariChat May or Love Square Fluff Week or Lukanette June, etc. Still, it would be fun if people did start joining in. And yet the creator of the event can't hit her own deadline of getting a Plagg-themed story done by Friday the 13th? Especially when she had 9 months to plan?

It hurt, to be honest. It still hurts. I know that no one else is mad or disappointed with me missing this deadline, but I'm just super angry with myself and my clogged up inspiration. Especially when I DID think of something, but I just couldn't figure out how to execute it.

Four false starts. FOUR. Within the span of about 72hrs. I started the story four different times; each time getting about a page or page-and-a-half in before realizing it either won't go anywhere or won't involve Plagg nearly as much as I was aiming for. (Yes, they are all saved in case I wanted to use them as jumping off points for other stories later.)

I just couldn't figure it out, and I still can't. I tried scrapping the whole idea I had come up with, since I clearly couldn't figure out how to execute it, but I couldn't think of anything else, even after spending hours looking up writing prompts.

Which is why I tend to not ask for writing prompts, or participate in many fan events like ship weeks. Prompts rarely work at actually inspiring me for a story. I can look at the prompt and go, "huh, that's a neat idea", but it's so painfully rare that they ever actually inspire a story.

So... uh... yeah. That was my week: try to come up with a Plagg-centric story for Friday 13, fail, spend a day flipping through prompts to try to come up with an alternate idea, fail again, spend the weekend depressed because of my "failure." Followed by this past week: try to recover from the weekend by working on this post so it can still go up on Tuesday, fail, figure I can work on it throughout the day Tuesday and just post it late, fail, become mentally exhausted from working every day for 9 days straight, slowly chip away at this post, ACTUALLY publish on my first day off since the 14th, feel a sigh of relief.

Oh, and also Hubby bought me a gift the weekend of the 13th to try to help cheer me up during my funk. Bless this glorious man and his huge heart.

Which brings us to right now, and why I'm switching gears again. I'm trying to put the Plagg Appreciation Day debacle behind me (although, not seeing a new story published in 2020 for that collection will always haunt me), and instead talk about the story I HAVE been able to build. Or, rather, the one I've built a foundation for as others co-wrote the main body of it.

We're moving into fun and happy territory, because it's Scum and Villainy story time!

Last Monday Hubby had to work a closing shift. Normally, we would be able to run a session without a player present, and come up with an excuse as to why their character wasn't involved in that job. That's one of the great things about the Forged in the Dark games. That way you don't have to worry about always having everyone available. Problem is, due to timing, the crew is technically still in the middle of a job, so it would be weird to have Hubby's character Quinton randomly vanish. Also, Hubby got off of work at 9:30pm (21:30), and that is normally smack dab in the middle of our session. It would be disrupting to pause the game so I could pick him up, and then for Quinton to randomly pop in for the remainder of the job (or Hubby to continue to miss out on the session despite now being home).

It just made sense to skip game again, but that also means... *drum roll* I still only have two sessions to tell you beautiful peeps about instead of three! Sadly, even THAT is a lot to tell in an already lengthy post (we did a LOT more than I gave our group credit). So this is going to have to be a multi-parter series. I have a head start already for part 2, plus I'm FINALLY getting back to my usual work schedule. I'm hoping both will help me hit my deadline next week. In the meantime though, we've got that first session to catch you up on.

Buckle up, peeps, because shenanigans ensued almost right out of the gate.

So, quick refresher:

The crew consists of Demarcus (I forgot to have Quarthix spell his last name out for me so I could read his handwriting), who was a mob doctor for the Borniko Syndicate. The players decided that Demarcus already had ownership of the Stardancer when he met up with his crewmates (by way of the Syndicate strongly suggesting he go with them). Despite Demarcus owning the ship, the de facto leader of the crew is Quinton Shrike, a member of a minor noble house. Quinton has the expensive habit of racing in the RIP races: high-octane hovercraft races at the speed of sound. Quinton was invited into the official RIP League, but could only do so with a team. Quinton met up with fellow RIP racer tI'kæl, a Memish princess and high priestess who is pretending she's on a religious pilgrimage so she could experience the rest of the galactic sector. During that meet-up, Quinton asked tI'kæl if she wanted to form a RIP team with him. She gladly agreed, but neither of them had the funds to do so. That's where Demarcus and the Borniko Syndicate come in. Demarcus is charged to show Quinton and tI'kæl the criminal ropes, as it were. The trio now use their services as smugglers to fund their RIP League team.

As the official game starts, the crew has picked up a few jobs offered by their reclusive info broker Magnilda "Maggie" Sanaas. One such job is to meet up with her contact Mino "Quirk" Zer on the crystal planet of Vos (nicknamed "Glimmer," similar to how we've nicknamed Mars "The Red Planet"). The crew are to smuggle some of the crystals off of Vos and deliver them to the Turner Society, who use these valuable crystals as a key component for their drugs (called Haze). Problem is, these crystals are highly valued by the Hegemony, and so Vos is heavily guarded and monitored to prevent any crystal theft.

The other job Maggie had for them was an escort mission. Her friend Ishi is a Xeno (re: non-human; alien) weapons dealer and designer who is in hiding on the night side of the tidal-locked planet of Sonhandra. Ishi has allies within the Maelstrom Pirates, who have a secret haven called The Cove, which is hidden within the in-system nebula the Ashtari Cloud. The Cloud causes standard navigation equipment to act up, making it nigh impossible to navigate within the Cloud without specific equipment the Maelstrom Pirates invented. Hoping this is the safest place to hide while on the lam, Ishi needs an escort to The Cove.

Since Vos and Sonhandra are in the same star system - Holt - and this is the system the crew wanted to start in, they figured it would be fairly easy to do both jobs at the same time. One of the Turner Society's three main headquarters happens to be in the Sonhandra capital of Ugar, and Maggie told the crew that Ishi was hidden just over a kilometer outside of Ugar. Easy peasy. They would pick up the crystals from Quirk on Vos, then head over to Sonhandra to drop them off with the Turner Society before picking up Ishi and heading to the neighboring Rin star system to drop Ishi off in The Cove.

The crew was able to make their way easily enough through Customs on the space station orbiting Vos and took a shuttle down to the crystal planet. Once there, they followed Maggie's instructions in order to meet up with Quirk. After proving they were the crew sent by Maggie for the Turner Society, Quirk handed over the crystals in a container roughly the same size and shape of an Igloo-brand 4qt mini cooler.

The actual case would look more futuristic,
but you get the basic size and function idea here.

Now the crew needed to figure out how to smuggle this container through Customs. They decided to try to find a "fellow tourist" to turn into their patsy. They figured they could stash some illicit drugs on the patsy, and while the 51st Legion was busy detaining the patsy, the crew could sneak through Customs with the box. Quinton also thought to line the top of the crystals with one of his fancy scarves and pile cheap but "suuuper pretty" souvenir crystals on top of the scarf. He hoped that if Customs still tried checking the box while the patsy was being arrested that they'd see the souvenir crystals, get distracted by the commotion (hoping the patsy would put up a big stink about how the drugs didn't belong to them), and hurry Quinton along. The other two would then make sure they didn't have anything illegal on them so they could quickly pass through Customs, and then off they would go.

Quinton purposefully picked the flashiest but cheap crystals he could find. "The more I look like the store keepers swindled me, the better. I want Customs to think I'm some rich idiot." Meanwhile, Demarcus and tI'kæl scouted for their fall guy. Soon enough, they found a man decked out in an overpriced get-up stylized to look like authentic Vosian garb while still horribly missing the mark.

Basically, he looked like a tourist walking through Texas while dressed like Lil Nas X from his "Old Town Road" music video.

Hint: Texans (typically) don't dress like this

This guy was clearly an oblivious elitist, and he was loudly gloating about all the pretty crystals he just bought. While Quinton wanted to LOOK like a guy who would spend 3 Cred (about $30,000) on souvenir crystals, this guy clearly was gullible enough to ACTUALLY spend 3 Cred on this pile of crystals. The elitist was flanked by two hulking bodyguards, but they clearly cared the bare minimum required to be paid: is their boss alive and unharmed physically? Good enough. They didn't care if he was taken advantage of, as long as he had enough money left to keep paying them.

It kept a little schmoozing, but tI'kæl used her status as a Memish princess to get close to the guy and strike up a conversation with him. She talked to him about the beauty of Yuura, the frozen moon of Mem, and convinced him that he just HAD to go check it out. A bit more bullshitting, and tI'kæl convinced the patsy - Mevakor Nagan - that he HAD to see Yuura while it is at its peak in just two days (Mem is also in the Holt star system). Since she's Memish, she could escort him there to show it off.

While tI'kæl was schmoozing Mevakor (whom she nicknamed "Mev"), and convincing him that he desperately wants to leave his original travel plans on Vos and go to Mem within two days, Demarcus and Quinton managed to bump both bodyguards and spill Mev's two duffel bags' worth of crystals. The bodyguards manhandled Demarcus a bit to make sure the two guys weren't threats before Demarcus convinced the guards that the crew was harmless. As Demarcus talked his way out of the bumping, Quinton helped the other guard pick up his master's crystals, and slipped the hidden drugs in to the bags.

Everything in place, they headed to Customs. Quinton lined up to be the first through Customs, that way if things go awry, tI'kæl and Demarcus could drop their drugs in front of Mevakor's guards to draw attention to them and the drugs hidden within their bags. Luckily, Quinton was oozing charisma (and fake naiveté). He annoyed the Customs agent right out the gate by flashing his Starsmiths Guild badge, because that simple move kinda-sorta warned the agent that, as a Guild member, he's fairly untouchable. Quinton then went extremely over-the-top with his excitement over the crystals he just bought from the tourist market, even offering to pick some of the crystals out of the box to show off how pretty they were. The agent did note that the scarf was hiding something below it, but was already exasperated enough by Quinton that he just waved him through, assuming it was more worthless crystals and the scarf was just woven through multiple layers to (needlessly) protect them.

No longer needing a patsy, the crew gladly brought Mevakor and his bodyguards along to use as potential future fall guys, should someone stop their ship prior to delivering the crystals to the Turner Society. TI'kæl even offered to show off her carving ritual to Mev while on their way to Mem - with a quick pitstop to refuel on Sonhandra, of course. Problem was, tI'kæl got so attached to Mevakor, that she became a touch loose-lipped, and let it slip that they were professional smugglers. She didn't let Mev know WHAT they were currently smuggling, but didn't even consider secrecy at the time, especially because nearly everything she told Mev seemed so new and exciting for him. Giddy about being on a real life smugglers' ship (no one in his Bridge Club would ever believe he actually rode with criminals!!!!), he began wandering the ship. He didn't find the crystals, but he did find the trio's tank-sized RIP Machines (the vehicles they race) in the hangar.

Upon arriving in Ugar on Sonhandra, Mev and his two bodyguards broke off to hit up the city's famous auction house while the crew did whatever "maintenance" they needed. That was when the trio headed towards Wildside, a society house on Sonhandra that the Turner Society runs as a secret drug den. Upon arriving, they were quickly blocked by the bouncers there. The crew didn't resemble their typical clientele (although Demarcus always dresses to the nines; Quinton is a minor noble, dressed "fancy"; and tI'kæl is a literal princess). Quinton demanded they speak to a higher-up, and one of the bouncers went to fetch someone. Meanwhile, the crew briefly discussed the possibility of selling the crystals to jeweler Yola Sprekk. She would easily match the Turner Society's price for the crystals. Demarcus quickly shut the idea down though. The Turner Society was one of the largest drug cartels in the sector, and, as a drug connoisseur himself, Demarcus didn't want to piss off the Society by selling their crystals to someone else (he didn't want to be cut off when instead he could maybe win favor and possibly some discounted/free drugs).

While the crew was waiting to be let in, a couple of waifs were wandering the street and pickpocketing others in the crowd. The crew spotted this fairly easily, and Demarcus tried to deter the kids by pulling out his gun. While intimidated enough to avoid the trio, the waifs still picked up a couple of small stones and pelted them at the back of Demarcus' head to try to still act tough. Pissed off now, Demarcus fired off a warning shot to scare the kids. It worked. Sorta. He was too mad, and fired off the warning shot too quickly. He didn't really aim ahead of time, plus he didn't properly prepare his arm to handle the kickback like he normally would. The shot went stray, and ended up going through a storefront window, killing the shopkeeper inside with a clean headshot.

Sonhandra is fairly use to violent and/or criminal behavior, and most things are fair game. However, the local authorities still rushed in to see if this was going to explode into a turf war. Demarcus quickly sidestepped his crewmates and casually started walking away (to try to not draw attention to him). Problem is, he started walking before his coat fully had the gun hidden again (he needed a minute for the gun barrel to cool without burning his coat), and a local spotted it. He was excited by the model and started calling out to Demarcus, wondering where he got the gun and shouting the make and model across the street. Nervous that the authorities were going to find him due to this loud mouth, Demarcus ended up selling the guy the gun (since he seemed to like it so much). It was a decent price, but still massively below market value. Demarcus then proceeded to casually wander Ugar to try to not draw any further attention. In the end, he ended up getting horribly lost.

Back in front of Wildside, the one bouncer that went to fetch a higher-up returned and whispered something to the other guard. With the "trouble maker" Demarus no longer with the other two, they're finally allowed inside and escorted to a sort of waiting lounge; not quite in the society house proper, but off the street at least. There, they are greeted by a minor noble named Vallis. She's long, lanky, and skeletally skinny with drawn skin, but there's also an elegance about her that comes exclusively from the way she does her hair and the clothing and jewelry she wears; much like the stereotypical skeletal supermodel.

Not to call this model out or anything, but think Anja Rubik back during 2012's Fall/Winter Paris Fashion Week.

Quinton does know of Vallis, and knows that she's worked with his noble friend and pseudo-lord Lang. The two have never personally met, though. Quinton still took point as he let her know that they had a package from Quirk, and showed her the box Quirk gave them (Quinton had left the worthless crystals on the Stardancer). Vallis has a single, exceptionally long and acrylic-like reinforced index nail. She picked up one of the crystals, and ran her nail along the full length. As she did, the crystal hummed and glowed, and tI'kæl sensed the mystical force of The Way resonating around them. Finding her proof that these are genuine - and high quality - Vosian crystals, Vallis became giddy, quickly paid Quinton and tI'kæl, and gleefully whisked the crystals away to a back room somewhere in the society house. As she headed out of the waiting room, Vallis told the duo that they would still have to pay like normal customers, but they were welcome to partake in the society house while there.

They opted to instead find their captain, who was still wandering Ugar somewhere. Actually, somehow, someway, Demarcus wandered OUTSIDE of the city of Ugar and into the desert-like sun side of Sonhandra. Quinton and tI'kæl made it back to the Stardancer, grabbed their land transports, and headed out to try to collect Demarcus from the sun side.

Breaking out of narration, this is the part of the gameplay (e.g. the part of closing out a job) where we sort out XP and complications to lead into the next job. One such complication was that the crew has a job with the Borniko Syndicate that they HAVE to do. The crew also built up 3 Heat in the Holt system, and earned 5 Cred (~$50,000) for the job. Quinton also purchased 2 Volts during some of his downtime while the other 2 spent their downtime training (leveling up character stats).

Before moving on to pick up Ishi, the crew heard of a RIP League race right there on Sonhandra scheduled for later that day, so they signed up. Meanwhile, Mevakor also heard about the RIP race. He knew he saw RIP Machines in the hull of the Stardancer, and was excited to see which team the crew "smuggled" them for, so he had his bodyguards escort him to the track on the day side of the planet.

That is where we're going to stop this week. Next post I'll talk about the RIP race, and maybe talk about the Ishi escort mission that started in our second session (the one where we were also socializing/watching Odin the kitten). We'll see how long describing the race runs me.

Thank you so much for sitting through my whining at the top of the post, and I hope getting to read the Scum and Villainy storyline was a nice palate cleanser. A much more pleasant way to send you back to the rest of your day.

One of these days I'll get back to putting this info on my World Anvil story "wiki" so it won't "clog up" my blog (because someday I'll actually talk about my fiction writing again here.... right?). In the meantime, though, I'll keep letting you fine folks in on the storyline here.

So, catch everyone next week!

Plagg Appreciation Day (A Belated Post)

Generated by Bitmoji
So, uh, well then. I- uh- I had every intention of posting a blog update last Friday, exactly as I said I would in my previous blog update. I woke up the morning of the 13th with a timeline planned out for publishing my post. I had spent the better part of the week mentally plotting out what I wanted to say and everything.

Then Friday got away from me. I'll get into why later. Bummed and not-so-lowkey mad at myself for missing my blog update when I had it actually planned out, I became determined to work on the post on Saturday instead. Then I felt under the weather and spent the day curled up in a ball on the couch. SUNDAY! SUNDAY I WOULD PUBLISH! Sundays are my short work days, so I had late afternoon and all evening to work on- Oh, I ended up passing out after work; still drained from Saturday.

MONDAY! I actually did write a large portion of this blog update on Monday, but the day got away from me again and I wasn't able to finish in time to actually publish on Monday. Okay, it's mostly done anyway, and Tuesdays ARE my normal update day; I could publish then. Nope. Yet another day that got away from me. Stupid, slippery time.
Wednesday was just too packed of a day to even bother trying to finish this post, so that was when I just waved the white flag. I would end up missing a week again and just post what I had written thus far today.

Which really bums me out because I actually had some exciting news last Friday! I really didn't want to wait a week to tell you guys - most of you probably already know by now anyway - but, I guess wait-a-week is what I had to do in the long run. Either way, for those of you that might not know...

I WROTE SOMETHING! LIKE, SIGNIFICANT SOMETHING!
Generated by Bitmoji

Aside from this blog, I haven't written anything significant since March! This is probably one of my longest writing dry spells since I started recreationally writing again in 2010! A decade! I've written SOMETHING with more consistency than this year for a decade! No wonder I've been in such a funk all year.

Screw 2020 already!

Let's get back to happy thoughts though: I wrote something! Last Friday was the 13th, which, most of you should know by now, is also a little fandom holiday I am championing: Plagg Appreciation Day. See, despite Plagg being Chat Noir's kwami - the main companion to the deuteragonist Chat Noir/Adrien Agreste - he actually gets surprisingly little screen time. Also, in fanfiction, neither kwami truly gets showcased all that often, but when they do, it's usually the relationship between Marinette and Tikki. Not that they don't deserve to be showcased or their bond get the love they've been shown, but where's the love for Plagg?

Since Plagg is probably one of my favorite characters, I wanted to champion for a time where we just focus on this little black cat being of bad luck and destruction. What better day to celebrate a black cat and a being of bad luck than on the superstitiously unluckiest day? Thus Friday the 13th being Plagg Appreciation Day was born. As its main (and probably only) promoter, I felt silly if I, of all people, missed it. Especially when the last Plagg-centric story I wrote - which also happened to be the last thing I wrote, period - concluded with me telling everyone "Catch you guys in November for the next Friday 13th!"

Maybe I cursed myself to not write anything in the interim by wording it like that.... Either way, I do find it amusingly appropriate that my writing dry spell was bookended by Plagg-centric stories.
Generated by Bitmoji

I spent this whole year with "Plagg Appreciation Day is coming up in November" bouncing around in the back of my mind. I spent the greater part of October trying to brainstorm ANYTHING for it. I'm just having a harder and harder time coming up with Plagg-centric plots. I should probably start brainstorming again now for the next Plagg Appreciation Day. I only have until August to figure out my next story.

As for this story? Well, my biggest issue was that the stories I came up with all started off as Plagg-centric, but always ended up evolving to be more about Love Square character and relationship growth. Even the concept I ended up going with became more Love Square focused in my initial plotting, and I had to really rein it in. I'll get into that more in a moment.

Before I do, I want to acknowledge that there was an unexpected bonus to, well... everything with regards to last Friday. For one, the date being Friday the 13th unofficially forced me to "just suck it up and write already," to make sure I had SOMETHING posted on the date. No more hiding in the corner and sobbing about my inability to write anything. I "had" to write something for this date. I had promised my readers that I would, and I couldn't disappoint you fine folks.

I know, I know. I should write for ME; not YOU. My mindset of writing for YOU is what gets me into my depressive spells when my stories don't get the recognition as other fanfics out there. However, if I'm only going to be disappointing myself if I don't write a story, I can live with that. Not wanting to disappoint you beautiful people by not writing is what truly motivates me. It's what keeps me wrestling with One and the Same instead of just junking the whole thing and leaving Peeping Tomcat as a solo project. Yes, I know that if the story just isn't working I SHOULD junk the whole thing, but parts ARE working and I'm DETERMINED to wrestle this thing into submission. For you, dear readers.

So, when it comes to WHAT I write; I write for myself, as many writers advise. However, when it comes to WHY I write; that's a nice 60/40 split between "to not disappoint my readers" and "because I'm not myself if I'm not writing". You guys take the 60%, just FYI. Which leads me to this super huge thank you for supporting me, loving what I do, and motivating me to keep going.

The other benefit of unofficial Plagg Appreciation Day pushing me to write, and, oddly enough, my inability to actually FOCUS on Plagg as the star of my story ideas? Well, I had to just keep brainstorming, now didn't I? It'd be one thing if I realized I had to write a Plagg-centric story, and instantly thought of a plot that would work. I'd be less stressed, sure, but I also wouldn't have any motivation to KEEP coming up with ideas. I already found one.

Plagg constantly drifting into the background of stories that were supposed to showcase him forced me to keep trying. In the meantime, I ended up finding quite a few new plot bunnies. I have myself a happy little fluffy farm again. Which means my list of Miraculous Ladybug WIPs and plot bunnies has now increased into:

  1. One and the Same - Yes, as I mentioned, I am still periodically working on this oh-so-stubborn sequel to Peeping Tomcat. I am DETERMINED to get this sequel out for my amazing readers. If nothing else, I have three or four really great bits that I'm desperate to share, and they need the context of the whole story for them to be as impactful as I hope they are.
  2. I Don't Care - My vision of what the Gabriel Agreste and Emilie Graham de Vanily romance was like leading up to Emilie's "disappearance" just before the show's start. It's a story I'm not actively working on, but I'm happily adding to it whenever I'm inspired. For a couple of months now - thanks to listening to both "Say You Won't Let Go" by James Arthur and "2AM" by MK, featuring Carla Monroe - I've been mentally working on a chapter based on the first time Emilie asked Gabriel to spend the night. I feel I really need to figure out their first official date before I get to a potential "sleep over" chapter, though. So I'm sticking a pin in that. I'd also gladly welcome first date ideas if any of you have suggestions.
  3. See Through My Eyes - Similar to my story Prescription for Love being my way of filling in the "off-screen" scenes in the episode "Backwarder," I want to write a companion for the New York special. The aim would be to show "missing" scenes (scenes that would help with character growth, but wouldn't necessarily help with plot progression, which is probably why they weren't written into the special), as well as scenes from other character POVs to better showcase what I interpreted as unspoken subtext in the special. A way to kind of explain it better to those who were a bit salty about how some characters/scenes were written. (Also, this is just a working title, so it might change)
  4. When Love Matters - A rewriting of the entire series where but one thing is changed: Gabriel Agreste is actually a loving and attentive father. There are still some episodes where the inciting incident is hard to rework using this premise - ones like "Chat Blanc" for instance - so this project is way on the back burner, but I've been periodically playing with it in the back of my mind since 2018.
  5. Untitled AU ending for the New York Special - This is kinda-sorta the story I ended up writing for the 13th, but here I'm talking about the initial version that evolved to be more about Adrien and Marinette than about Plagg. I'll go into more detail below, I promise.
  6. Untitled story making the original anime-stylized concept of Miraculous Ladybug canon compliant - it's a bit involved, so I'll go into more detail next week, but the long and short is that the reason "Plagg" and "Tikki" look different in the anime concept art is because they are actually "clones" of the real kwamis Adrien and Marinette are partnered with. I got the idea when watching One Piece and was told about the existence of Smile Fruit. This would be a bit of a long project as well.
  7. Untitled potential collab with Taurus Pixie inspired by the episode "Backwarder" - Specifically, we had talked way back in early 2019 about how cool it would be to delve further into Fu's and Marianne's relationship, and what Fu did between the disappearance of the monastery and WWII. Mainly, why is it the Nazis are implied to have known about Fu, the Miracle Box, and the Miraculous?
I think that's all of them. Most of those plunnies are going to be large, multichapter projects, so.... yeah, it will be some time before I get any/all cranked out. The farm is getting pretty full though, and I guess that's a good thing.

Circling back to the story I DID write though. Based on what I noted above for Plot Bunny #5, you can probably guess that it will contain spoilers for the Miraculous World: New York, United Heroez special, aka the ML NY special. So....

For those who don't know the special, but don't care about spoilers, or for those that might need a refresher, here's the basic synopsis.

New York City is hosting a French-American friendship week in honor of Washington's friendship with Lafayette, and Marinette's class is invited to join in on the celebration. One of the museum exhibitions showcased during the celebration is a collection of Washington and Lafayette artifacts, which unknowningly includes a Miraculous. Discovering this potential Miraculous in NYC, Gabriel Agreste decides to go as Hawk Moth to steal it. Initially, Adrien wasn't going to be allowed to go to NYC. However, after Marinette asked Gabriel to let Adrien go, and the man realized it's a golden opportunity to sneak to NYC without his son noticing his disappearance, Adrien was told he's going on the trip. Problem there, though, was that Ladybug had already informed Chat Noir that she'd be leaving Paris for a few days, and entrusted the city's protection to him. Adrien tries to let Ladybug know that he suddenly won't be in town either, but Plagg convinces him that it would only cause her to needlessly worry. Adrien can check the akuma alerts on his phone to see if Paris is in danger, and if there is an attack he can fly back to Paris using a new power upgrade.

On the way into the NYC airport the plane is attacked by supervillain Techno-Pirate (who later becomes akumatized by Hawk Moth into Techlonizer). The plane and passengers are saved by the American superhero team of Majestia (a combo of Supergirl, Wonder Woman, and Carol Danvers' Captain Marvel), her android daughter Uncanny Valley, and the duo of Knight Owl and Sparrow (homage to Batman and Robin). After safely landing and their class meeting up with the American students, Marinette and Adrien befriend Jess and Aeon. The next day, while the classes are visiting the museum, Techlonizer attacks. Aeon and Jess secretly transform into Uncanny Valley and Sparrow, but they are no match for the added magical power upgrades of an akuma, forcing Adrien and Marinette to transform for the assist. Chat Noir and Ladybug are both surprised to see the other in NYC; causing a rift between them as Ladybug worries about Paris, which is under attack by a Sentimonster while the duo is battling Techlonizer. With the teen superheroes occupied with Techlonizer, Hawk Moth manages to steal the Eagle Miraculous from the museum exhibit.

During the battle, Chat Noir powers up his Cataclysm to attack Techlonizer, but can't find a clear shot as he's focused on protecting Sparrow from the villain's attacks. Meanwhile, Ladybug is protecting Uncanny Valley and trying to figure out her Lucky Charm. LadyNoir have their normal back and forth about Ladybug coming up with a plan, and she makes a snide comment about not trusting Chat Noir anymore since he broke his promise to stay and protect Paris. Startled by Ladybug's words, Chat Noir drops his guard and is instantly thrown by Techlonizer; aimed straight for Ladybug, Cataclysm first. Uncanny Valley steps in the way and is destroyed by Chat Noir's power instead. Majestia, sensing her daughter's demise (or something like that?), rushes to the scene and pummels Techlonizer. As Majestia mourns, Ladybug uses her Lucky Charm to restore the city and Uncanny Valley. While no permanent harm was done, Chat Noir is still stricken with guilt, and Knight Owl demands the Parisian superheroes relinquish their powers while in the US. Ladybug refuses, and she and Chat Noir run from Knight Owl.

Safely hidden, LadyNoir discover the Sentimonster vanished from Paris, meaning any and all destruction to their home city is now permanent; Ladybug can no longer repair it with a Lucky Charm. Feeling even more guilt, Adrien, out of sight from Marinette, renounces Plagg and his possession of the Cat Ring. He then sprints off before Ladybug can stop him.

Both Marinette and Adrien then separately wander the rainy and empty streets of New York; the city is on lockdown since Techlonizer was still at large. As the teens return to the hotel their class is staying at, Gabriel sends a car to pick up Adrien, declaring the trip too dangerous and demanding he takes a private jet home ASAP. Adrien turns to Marinette in hopes she'll convince him and his father that Adrien should stay, but she's too distraught over Chat Noir and remains silent. After Adrien drives off Alya yells at Marinette for not saying anything in Adrien's time of need, and Marinette runs after the car. She can't catch up, however, and, even more defeated, continues to wander the city alone.

Meanwhile, Techlonizer - now Miraclonizer after Hawk Moth gave him the Eagle Miraculous - uses his Miraculous power to remove the moral inhibitions of the adult superheroes, causing them to run amok within the city. This gives Miraclonizer and Hawk Moth free rein to hold the whole world hostage as there are no superheroes left to stop them, and Miraclonizer gained control over American missiles; readying them to launch. The city's - and world's - only hope is Uncanny Valley, Sparrow, Ladybug, and Chat Noir. Uncanny confesses that her robotic brain was able to see through the magic that normally conceals Ladybug's and Chat Noir's identities, so she knows exactly who to look for, and flies off in search of Marinette. Meanwhile, Sparrow tries to negate as much damage caused by the superheroes as possible.

Uncanny Valley finds Marinette alone, lets her know that she knows Marinette is Ladybug, and asks for her assistance. Marinette laments the loss of her partner and admits she doesn't think she can be Ladybug without him. Uncanny offers to return Chat Noir's ring to him. She then flies off and breaks into the private jet flying Adrien home. She offers the Cat Ring back to him, but he refuses to accept it, stating that there was no way Ladybug could forgive him. Uncanny plays an audio recording of Marinette stating she couldn't imagine being Ladybug without her Chat Noir; convincing Adrien to take on the mantle again. Uncanny and Chat Noir then meet up with Sparrow and Ladybug.

Ladybug comes up with a plan to get the Miraculous away from Miraclonizer, return the adult superheroes to their senses, and then collectively take down Techlonizer so she can cleanse the akuma. The plan goes off without a hitch, and in the process Ladybug gives control of the Eagle Miraculous to Sparrow. After defeating Techlonizer, and restoring both the superheroes and New York City, Majestia and Knight Owl apologize for being so harsh with Ladybug and Chat Noir earlier. Ladybug then leaves the Eagle Miraculous with Sparrow as its holder.

The Parisian superheroes promise to meet up again in Paris, and then Uncanny Valley and Chat Noir fly back to the plane so Adrien's absence isn't noticed. Marinette and her class close out the evening holding up a sign saying hi to Adrien during a news feed about Ladybug and Chat Noir saving New York; explaining why the superhero duo wasn't around to protect Paris. It's implied the Parisians don't mind the heavy cleanup to repair their city since they understand LadyNoir saving NYC instead.

Okay, that was a lot, but it was also an hour-long special, so I feel I was able to condense that down fairly succinctly. Everything I included is fairly crucial for understanding both Plot Bunny #5 and what I actually wrote last Friday.

The main concept was birthed upon my sixth-or-so rewatch of the special. Uncanny Valley confesses to Marinette, "Your suit's quantum-masking is meant to confuse human minds, Ladybug. I am not human." This canonically explains why Uncanny could figure out Ladybug's and Chat Noir's identities (there are fans who have pointed out that this means Max's AI friend Markov must therefore also know who the superheroes truly are). This is all well and good, however, earlier in the special, when Techno-Pirate first shows up in his akumatized form Techlonizer, Aeon tries to scan him to better understand his new superpowers. Confused, she tells Jess that she can't get a proper read, "...as if magic were interfering with my scanning tools."

Add in that Plagg reminds Adrien that kwamis can't be registered by technology when Uncanny Valley can't see or hear Plagg. Finally, sprinkle in Ladybug's comments to Lady Wifi from season 1 about the masks and costumes being magical. Tie them all together, and what if the magic that created the suits caused enough interference with Uncanny's scanning that she couldn't see who is hidden under the costumes after all? What if Uncanny Valley didn't know Marinette was Ladybug, and couldn't return the ring to Adrien because she also didn't know who Chat Noir was?

That was the initial jumping point for the Plagg Appreciation Day story. From there I wondered, "Plagg is the only one who knows that Adrien was Chat Noir, so what if it's actually Plagg who gets the ring back to the kid?" In the end, I more-or-less went with that concept for the story I posted on Friday. However, before I whittled back down to that idea, the plot ballooned. Plagg couldn't tell Marinette the name of his holder, and I'm not sure if the magic also restricts him from pointing to Adrien to mime to Marinette who Chat Noir was, so he couldn't get the ring back to Adrien that way. Instead, I had this whole plotline planned out where Tikki and Plagg work together to convince Marinette that Adrien would be a good "replacement" Chat Noir. In the end, Marinette agrees, Ladybug offers the ring to Adrien, he accepts, and the duo tearfully re-unite with Ladybug now knowing the identity of her partner. In return, she de-transforms so he knows who she is too. They no longer have any secrets between the two of them. Yay, happy ending!

Except, this is HEAVILY focused on Love Square and their dynamic instead of Plagg. It's also such an involved story that there was no way I would be able to write it in the one day I had left.

OKAY! SPOILERS OVER NOW! YOU CAN START READING AGAIN IF YOU SKIPPED THE LAST PART!

For those who skipped that huge section up there, first of all, sorry to force you to scroll past a heavy portion of this post. The special is an hour long, so I had quite a bit to recap to make sure my story made sense for everyone interested in reading it. Secondly, the spoiler-free version of the above is that the story I posted on Friday is an alternate telling of the NY special's ending so that Plagg has more agency.

For those of you who don't care about spoilers, or who have seen the special already, you can find my story in my normal four haunts.

  1. *cries and applauds at the same time* beautiful. This broke my heart then repaired it again. This was amazing. I love it
(from TLOS21)
  2. Love the bromance Plagg/Adrien. Beautiful story (from Kapel85)
  3. (one of Taurus Pixie's semi-lengthy reviews; please see below)
  4. Oh I love this! Especially with how it puts more of a spotlight on how Plagg could have had a bigger role in the resolution of the NY special. Because yeah, [REDACTED DUE TO SPOILERS INCLUDED IN THE REVIEW], and I just love him and Adrien loving and appreciating each other! Also Plagg confessing that he was the one who pushed Chat into not telling Ladybug he was leaving; that IS something he bears some responsibility for. (from Keyseeker)
  5. I absolutely squealed when I saw a story from you in my inbox. This made my month. Plagg is absolutely one of my favourite characters, and I think you did a grest job keeping him at the forefront of this story. (from MalcolmReynolds)
You may notice that my reviews count doesn't match with the number of reviews I actually shared here. Unfortunately, the first review I got on this story was just someone dumping salt all over Marinette and Tikki, and really had no relation to my story whatsoever. I wasn't about ready to perpetuate it by posting it here. The second missing review wasn't actually a review per se. I had replied to Keyseeker's review that, even with my rewrite of the special's ending, I still appreciated the ending we got and the thought the writers must have put into it. Someone else responded to that reply, and that is the 2nd missing "review."

As for Taurus Pixie's review:
Taurus Pixie: Dude, I don't think you could ever come across as 'rusty'. You always write with the talent of a professional, so don't sweat it. Your work is always very clean, polished and awesome to read! I certainly squealed when I saw that you had published this fic! I can't believe you managed to write this high quality piece in such a short span of time! Rock on!

This was such a good idea! I knew it would turn out amazing since the moment you told me about it! You always manage to keep everyone so in character that it feels like I've slipped into a parallel universe where all of this was what really happened and that you're actually one of the show writers lol. It's always super interesting to see things from a kwami's point of view and you nailed it like always. It was super emotional, especially with the way that Adrien viewed himself. I also loved the call back to the Banananoir costume! Genius! Adrien has so kept that thing, there is no doubt in my mind!

Perfect work as always! I hereby proclaim you the parallel universe queen! Can't wait to see what more you have in store for the future (providing that 2020 finally decides to give us all a break at long last!). Take your time with everything and good luck!

You are all far too kind to me. Also, two of you "squealed" when you saw that I posted? I mean, I know both of you are strong cheerleaders of mine, and I appreciate that about both of you so very very much, but... squealed!? You're amazing and I love you beyond words for that!

Also, thank you, Pixie, for this one line in your review: "I can't believe you managed to write this high quality piece in such a short span of time!" I'm beginning to think that maybe writing nearly 6000 words, polishing it, and formatting it for 4 different website uploads within the span of about 12 hours is.... fast?? Not the normal pacing for most amateur writers?

And here I thought I was both going painfully slow and wasting my entire day off last week.

See, the reason last Friday "got away from me", as I mentioned at the top of this post, was because I did not intend for this story to take me the whole day to write. I started it at about 7:30 or 8 in the morning, or something like that. I had intended to have it written and published by about noon; maybe 1pm. It was a rare day that both Hubby and I had off together, so I had every intention of getting the story done, write the blog post promoting the story, get some grocery shopping and laundry done, maybe work on some much needed joint chores around the house - such as rotating our mattress and cleaning the windows - and then spend the evening snuggling and just enjoying having some time together.

Instead, it turned into leaving our bed early while he slept in. Writing until he brought me breakfast. Taking a quick break to share the meal with him, then back to writing. Another break for the two of us to watch the latest Oxventure live; something we rarely get to do because, being from the UK, their live streams tend to be late-morning/early-afternoon our time, and we're usually at work. The 2hr break was quickly followed by lunch and more writing. This time I hid in our bedroom so he could be in the living room and I wouldn't get distracted. I came back out of the bedroom as my laptop battery was about to die, so I guess I was in there for about 2 more hours. It felt like 45 minutes, honestly, and I was super grumpy about how bad my laptop battery is. I mean, 2hrs is still a sucky amount of time "in this day and age" but the laptop is also a few years old, so I'll give Grandpa here a break. Headphones in, music blasting (a bit too loud to properly concentrate, but it needed to be to drown out the TV...), I finished my story. Just in time to sprint to the laundromat before it would close, but also too late in the day for a standard weekly grocery shopping trip. Instead, I spent the time at the laundromat editing the story I spent the past 10 hours or so writing - minus the 2hr break to watch a session of D&D - and fighting with the new format over on DeviantArt. I probably should have poked my head onto that site at some point this year so I could have gotten used to the new format, but... meh? After fighting with DA for the 20-some minutes my laundry was in the wash, I threw my hands up and switched over to FFN instead. I mean, who reads my stuff over on DA anyway, right?

Well... apparently a surprisingly larger number than I give credit. Also, only a month-or-so ago I had someone comment on a story I wrote back in 2017 for my never-played Numenera character Jynna. A story I even forgot I wrote, and they said such sweet things about it: "Awesome story! I would love to see more. Your descriptions put me right in the setting, and I like the voice." So... that's cool.

Anyway, back to last Friday. Between formatting my story for FFN, AO3, and Tumblr - which in and of itself was a pain - gathering up my laundry, and then sprinting over to the grocery store before it closed for the bare essentials to tide us over...
I was not a happy camper by the time I got home at about 9:30 at night. Especially since I zipped out of the house the moment I was done writing my story, instead of, ya know, eating dinner first. Hubby fed me and hung up the clothes that need to be line-dried. Meanwhile, I tried to calm myself with some Animal Crossing to get my dailies in, and then I continued battling with Tumblr and DA. By the time I was finished publishing my story in my normal 4 spots, it was past midnight, and I was exhausted, and frustrated that I "wasted" the day instead of spending a rare joint-day-off with my husband, and mad that I didn't get the story up soon enough for people to actually read it on the 13th, and mad that I didn't get to my blog post when I had it all planned.

It was not a good day for time management, and I was already hormonal, so.... it was just not a good day.

Thank God for my husband, who was nothing but understanding and supportive and a wonderful caretaker last weekend.

I don't think that image properly conveys my love for this man, but I think you guys get the idea.

Soooo, uh... yeah. So sorry I missed last week, but I do appreciate the love I've been showered with all week. I truly do.

I can't wait to chat with you guys again next week. I already have a head start talking about that 6th plot bunny, the one where the anime version of Miraculous Ladybug - aka Ladybug PV - becomes canon compliant. I'm actually late with publishing this post because I spent the last two hours working on my write up of that plot bunny before I realized this post is beyond epic as it is. So that got bumped.

Something to look forward to for next Friday, though, right?

In the meantime, for all of my American readers. I want to wish you an early Happy Thanksgiving. I know it's rough trying to decide how to celebrate and whether or not to be with your family. I simply wish you a healthy, safe, and loving holiday. I also wish for you to find the time to count all of your blessings. I know it's tough to find them with this year, but I promise you it does help to remember the good still left around you.

Surviving Coronavirus (Don't Worry, I'm Healthy)

Generated by Bitmoji
Hey, everyone. Hard to remember it's a holiday, huh? How are we doing?  Is everyone staying well, or at least doing the best you can to recover if you already did catch - or suspect you may have caught - the coronavirus? I hope everyone comes out of this fine. Best of health to you all.

If you are concerned about the virus, first thing's first. Please make sure you are getting correct information to keep yourself and your community safe. There is a LOT of panic-driven and just mean-spirited misinformation going around social media lately. It seems to be spreading even faster than the virus itself, and that could put a lot of vulnerable people at risk.

The best place to find accurate and trust-worthy information would be the WHO and CDC websites. Here, I'll even leave you with the links to the pages specifically designated for COVID-19 facts.

Please, keep yourselves properly informed. Be cautious and take this disease seriously, but try not to panic. DO NOT HOARD; get only what you need for about 2weeks, and leave the rest for others who also need it. Social distance yourself, and self-isolate if you are capable of doing both. I know this is tricky, but it really helps a LOT if you are privileged enough to follow through.

A great way to see an overly simplified visualization of the importance of social distancing is showcased in this Washington Post article.

For those of you that have to still be out in public, please be careful. Remember that you don't need a facemask if you are currently healthy and are not taking care of someone who is sick and cannot wear a mask. Just be mindful of the surfaces you touch - disinfect as much and as often as possible - wash your hands properly and for at least 20sec, and keep your hands away from your face unless they have been freshly washed (and make sure to properly disinfect your hands again after facial touching).

Good health to all of you, dear friends. Please look out for each other.

Let's say you ARE stuck at home though, and you've already blown through your To Do list. What's next to keep yourself from going insane?

Well, seems the answer for a lot of people has been
Old meme is old
X all the Y meme
originated on Hyperbole and a Half
If there's a silver lining to this whole COVID-19 crisis, it's that it sure is a golden time to be a content creator. People stuck at home with nothing else to do but surf the web? All of them craving something to bring them joy? People are just devouring fanart and fanfics, let alone original content that can still be put out.

So, naturally, I'm still stuck with writing burnout/writers block.... perfect.

Ya know what would have been amazing to have completed in time to post right about now? How about One and the Same, instead of it going on the second FULL FRIGGEN YEAR in writing limbo...? Or, maybe my initial desire for the break between seasons 3 and 4: When Love Matters. Heck, I'd even settle for finishing my gosh-dang Fluff Week stories!

At least, thanks to a major assist from ChibiSunnie, I managed to get my Plagg Appreciation Day story written. We'll ignore the fact that I didn't actually publish it until nearly midnight on the 13th, and even then it was only on DA and Tumblr. The story wasn't edited and published on FFN and AO3 - as well as polished on DA and Tumblr - until Saturday afternoon. Whooo... way to go, me!

Anyway, if you haven't yet, you can read the story in those normal four spots.

"The Truest of Friends"
Summary: It's the second day of the new school year, which also means it's been a year since Stoneheart first attacked Paris. Adrien wonders how he could best celebrate the anniversary of becoming Chat Noir, and how to properly showcase how much he cares for someone very special in his life.

In truth, I was still completely stumped on what to write for this past Friday 13th. Then I got a mini-list of potential writing prompts from Chibi. She's not even in the fandom, but based on what I've told her about Plagg, and based on what I've said here in my blog, she came up with a couple of awesome ideas. I have a handful of new plot bunnies growing on my Plunny Farm thanks to her suggestions.

The winning idea though? It was largely due to this image she sent me.

The literal cheese cake just seemed like SUCH a thing Adrien would do for Plagg. I just HAD to write it into a story, but first I had to figure out how to work it into the story or why Adrien would make it in the first place. Chibi had suggested Plagg's birthday, but that's more complicated than she knew, so I nixed that idea. I instead landed on Adrien celebrating the day he met Plagg. Chibi again suggested that it would be sweet if it were post-reveal so Marinette could help him plan, but I also nixed that idea. Not that it's bad, I, in fact, loved the idea, and have it as one of those Plunnies growing on the farm. The problem was that if they knew who the other was, and they were jointly planning a party to celebrate Adrien meeting Plagg, how could it not also be a party celebrating Marinette meeting Tikki? It happened on the same day, after all. It would detract from Plagg, which defeated the point of the day.

Same issue with Chibi's other suggestion of Marinette NOT knowing what she's helping Adrien do when either a) she runs into him in the grocery store trying to buy the ingredients, or b) he asks her to help him make it. It would be fun to see him try to explain his way out of the cake without revealing his kwami. Problem though is that the story then circles around the Adrienette dynamic, or MariChat one, if Adrien has Marinette assist him while he's Chat Noir so he can explain who the cake is for. That has its own complications, though, beyond focusing on the wrong character(s).

I had the basic idea though, thanks to Chibi, so I started running with it to see what came up.

What came up was about four more false-start stories that ended up focusing more on Adrien's dynamic with Marinette then the Plagg-focused story it SHOULD have been.

In fact, even the finished product of The Truest of Friends felt like it was too heavy with the LadyNoir ship as opposed to Plagg Appreciation. I mean, it DID get there, and people seem to have enjoyed it, but it kept longer to reach where I wanted it to be than I would have liked.

Oh well. It was that story or nothing by the time I decided to commit to it.

Like I said, though, it seems to have done well... ish... It's been up for roughly 3 days and already has these stats.

I had tagged Chibi to give her credit for the prompt idea, but the story is out of her normal fandoms, so it was a pleasant surprise to see that she had the time to read it. Especially with her busy schedule and tons of fics within her fandom(s) I'm sure she has backlogged.

Still, the amazing ChibiSunnie did take the time to read my story, and left me this lovely comment.
Chibi: Awwwwww this is so sweet and adorable!!! ^_^ Adrien's speech to Plagg made me tear up, and I'm not even in this fandom! <3 I'm so glad my plot bunny and the pic I sent you was able to help spark your own plot bunny to write this story! ^_^
Chibi, you are pure, undiluted awesome sauce! Thank you so much for the idea, for the inspiring picture, and for taking the time to read and review my work!

Now, if I could get my act together for those other WIPs, that would be fantastic! Especially with the crave for content so high right now.

I mean, to be fair, my Plagg story has already started petering off with the views, just getting a couple trickling in here and there. With the demand for content so great, a LOT of creators are gladly complying. A bunch of them are doing so as a stress reliever for this whole coronavirus crisis; something I'll talk about more in a bit. Due to the high demand and high output to meet it, I'm sure my story is already buried under newer content, and all of my stories would suffer the same fate. Still, I want to try. If I'm going to grab new readers, now's the time, right? Especially since a lot of people now have the free time to actually consume my much larger/longer works.

IF ONLY I COULD FIGURE OUT WHAT TO WRITE!

I'm still struggling with the 'Your Voice' prompt to try to finish off those Fluff Week stories. Let's ignore that I'm well over a month late on these....

I started writing up all of the ideas I've had - in bullet-list plot breakdowns - and why they won't work for what I need for the prompt. Hopefully that will help me weed the ideas out of my head so I can stop circling back to them, and my mind can finally find something that works.

As of right now, I'm still fixated on a trust obstacle course, but I can't think of why Marinette wouldn't have a turn to be blindfolded. Maybe she is, and ALSO starts to pick up that Adrien and Chat Noir sound similar - especially after already suspecting they're the same guy - but have the story told in Adrien's POV since Marinette's realization isn't the focus on what I want to say in this story?????? Instead, bring up Marinette's realization in that final 'Reveal' prompt story??????

Trying to figure this story out is getting exhausting.

So, I'm still at the drawing board for that, and I haven't thought of OatS in MONTHS, so I'm debating if I should try switching gears and working on that again instead of finishing the Fluff Week stories since I'm way past the deadline anyway???? Or do I start on When Love Matters since I can post each chapter as I complete it, and people have the time for long-content at this point????

I don't know which way is up or which direction to head at this point, but I also feel equally lost not writing at all. Aside from chipping away at my Fluff Week story - with about a million false-starts - and my 2 days working on The Truest of Friends, I haven't really written anything since Valentine's day. I'm gonna lose it if I can't get a story focus soon.

I thought maybe reading other stories might help, because that's a general rule of thumb for writers: you also need to be avid readers.

The decision to read was kind of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, I was filled with amazing fluffy feels and I loved the words I consumed. On the other hand, it just seemed to spotlight that I'm NOT writing, and that I'm NOT getting the readers I could be right now.

Also, there's a story in particular that I just KEEP seeing pop up on my dash with comments like "Read this!" and "Do yourself a favor and stop what you're doing to read this" and "THIS IS PERFECTION!" and... while I did enjoy the fic, and I will share it in a minute, it also kind of stung constantly seeing it on my dash.

You guys are amazing, and I love each and every one of you. You guys pick me up and keep me going. But....

My stories have never received a "OMG YOU NEED TO READ THIS RIGHT NOW, IT IS SO GOOOOOOOOD!" reblog or share. And, to be fully honest, that hurts.

Not to guilt trip any of you to start doing that of course.
Gaaah! Wait, no! What am I saying!?!?!

Sorry. Again, the love that you all have shown me is amazing, and I love it, and I'm always humbled by how much love I DO get from you fine folks. I don't mean to diminish anything you guys do at all. You are all 100% rockstars!

I'm just.... I dunno, I'm feeling super insecure about my writing ability again, I guess. I don't know if it's because I write too long, or not often enough, or my stories aren't fluffy enough, or - ironically - not angsty enough, or if they are TOO close to canon instead of being new and exciting, or if there isn't enough overtly romantic content, or what the deal is. I'm still just this obscure writer in the fandom, despite adding content to the fandom for months - and even years - longer than some of these writers that are getting all of this love and promotion.

Not to say that they DON'T deserve the love. They do. Like I said, I'm planning on sharing one of the stories here myself. By no means am I trying to take anything away from these amazing writers. I am enjoying their content, and I'm elated they are adding to the fandom content. I just... I dunno... I want some of the pie too?

BAH! Don't mind me. Sorry. Like I said, I'm just in a mood right now. Once I get out of this writing funk I'll be fine.

So, let's instead focus on these stories that either ARE getting that love I've just talked about, or they totally SHOULD be.

The story in question that has been getting all of that love? Well, seems one of the artists I follow - Yunyin - had her birthday the other day, and so a relatively new content creator - chatnoirinette - wrote yunyin a story for her birthday, based on chatnoir's favorite piece of fanart yunyin has done. The image is of Future Chat Noir coming back in time to yell at Adrien for being a moron; drawn after the episode "Stormy Weather 2" aired last year. I have also absolutely loved the artwork, but I never thought to write a story based off it.

Summary: An older Chat Noir shows up in the middle of a class field trip with a special mission for his younger self.

Word Count: 4315
Rating: General Audiences
The story is amusing. First, it's fantastic to watch Older Chat Noir and Plagg both be so exasperated with the teenage Adrien. Second, the way that even Older Chat Noir is confused on how time travel works is equally amusing. Third, there are just these real sweet moments as Older Chat Noir leaves breadcrumbs for Teen Adrien without actually giving away the kid's future. On top of that, the interactions between Older Chat Noir and Older Ladybug are adorable. Finally, Bunnyx adds her own level of humor which is greatly appreciated.

Also, considering where the story left off, while it is complete as-is, it DOES leave an opening for more story. So it will be interesting to see if chatnoirinette continues, and if so, how the story will further develop.

Like I said, people are GUSHING over this story; at least, in my little corner of the fandom. So if you haven't gotten to this story yet, seems now is the time.

Now, early on in this post I mentioned that a lot of content creators seem to be using their art and writing as a means to cope with the coronavirus pandemic. I've seen some amusing bits of fanart based on the virus, such as this fanart where Nathalie refuses to let Hawkmoth use the despair in the world to create an army of akumatized supervillains. The little knocks on the panic that has sprung up from the pandemic, and things like social distancing and self-isolation, are amusing to see in these much more lighthearted bits of work. I love that content creators are trying to lighten the mood with their respective craft.

One such content creator actually caught my attention based on their title.

I've mentioned this in past blog posts, but I follow a Tumblr page that posts promotional links to Love Square content an algorithm finds on FFN, AO3, and Wattpad. Oddly enough, even though I didn't list The Truest of Friends as love square, since I think I did tag LadyNoir for the opening of the story, my Plagg-centric story did pop up in the feed.

ANYWAY! My point is, since I was trying to find artwork, and the like, in order to see if it could help inspire my own writing, I wasn't in the mindset to actually read anything the other day. I saw the icon for the story-promotion Tumblr, and I just quickly scrolled along. I breezed past quite a few stories - because, as I've mentioned, people are dumping content online to help ease the pain of the isolation - and I wasn't really paying any attention to any of the stories I scrolled past. Then something caught my eye: the title "The Toilet Paper Crisis."

Considering how RIDICULOUS this whole toilet paper hoarding has become, I had a nice chuckle at the title. I was then going to move along again until I noticed the author: writeringoodfaith, a repeat reader of mine that I've been talking to a bit in the FFN PMs. I'm always a fan of sending love back to those who share it with me, and the story itself was fairly short - I could read it on my lunch break - so I dove right in.

Summary: It may have been Adrien's first time getting groceries but don't judge, ok? He's been busy gaining financial independence from his father, moving out of home, and guiltily ignoring daily news updates from Nathalie. Only one task remains between him and true independence: locating toilet paper. Maybe the girl laughing at him in this empty aisle can help?

Watching Adrien and Marinette flirt in an empty toilet paper aisle is just adorable. Adrien's flirty puns are terrible, but Marinette's response to them is perfect. These two dorks truly are made for each other. Also, since WIGF was mostly concerned about the spread of misinformation, Marinette gives some real-talk advice to Adrien as to what he should do to keep himself safe during the pandemic.

It's just a cute little piece. Why not give one of my lovely readers some love in return?

Fastforward to yesterday. I was again struggling to figure out what to write, and was kind of obsessively checking my email, getting those sweet sweet endorphins from seeing another email telling me I had a review, or a new fave. There were no such messages in my mailbox around my work lunch break, but there WAS an email alerting me to a new fanfic written by zenmisery. You might remember me gushing about her and mostlovedgirl / chanceuseladynoire over their Fluff Week story Two Hundred Seventeen Days.

Well, I've been a failure of a fan when it comes to going back to read their previous works, but I was too tempted to NOT read Zen's newest story. I was killing time over lunch anyway. I needed something to inspire my own writing. Let's plow through the 6600+ words!

Summary: Ladybug tells Chat he needs to finally move on. He does. She has mixed feelings.
A birthday gift for mostlovedgirl

Apparently there were a lot of birthdays this week for content creators I follow....

This story is just fantastic! It's a little angsty with Ladybug telling Chat Noir that they just cannot be together, and Chat Noir struggling to move on, and Marinette having conflicting feelings when she finds out that Chat Noir has a legit crush on someone other than Ladybug.... GAAAH! So good! Also, I might have an extra connection to this story because it hit so close to home in a couple of elements.

First, Ladybug's reasoning behind telling Chat Noir to give up on her is very reminiscent of why I had Arnold break up with Helga in my sadly unofficially abandoned "Hey, Arnold!" story What Is Truly Meant To Be. So, that interaction rang true on a whole different level than I feel it did for most of the readers. Second was later in the story when Marinette realizes she's torn between Adrien and Chat Noir, and feels like she's cheating on both of them because her heart can't decide between them. I have the same exact sentiment laced throughout One and the Same, complete with

But don't fret, readers, because the story isn't just angst. Oh no! No, this is a rollercoaster of a story with plenty of highs as well.

Sure, the moment Chat Noir says goodbye to Marinette after confessing to her that he's moving on from Ladybug, and Marinette strongly encourages him to ask the new crush out, is bittersweet. However, the interactions between the two of them leading up to that point is comforting and adorable. Plus, the MariChat moment at the end of the story is FANTASTIC and steamy and Adrien is such a Good Boy. I love them. I love these two beans so much! The Adrienette moments are pure fluff, and I ADORE watching Adrien bring out his more Chat Noir side in order to flirt with Marinette.

THAT. IS. MY. JAM!

I also love the tag-team of POV between Adrien and Marinette. It works so well together; seeing both halves of the puzzle before they can piece them together. I was on edge the whole time, and - as bad as this sounds - I was glad coronavirus has made customers a touch scarce, because it gave me time post-lunch break to finish this awesome story.

My only qualm is that it ends on SUUUUUUUCH a glorious cliffhanger! The story is complete as-is, and it's amazing as-is, and I love the "WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!?" way of closing out stories. There's a reason I love The Lady or the Tiger so much. At the same time, though? I WANT MORE! Zen has a long list of WIPs though, so if she does continue the story, it probably won't be for a while. Still, I am DOWN for continuing to read this story the second she posts another chapter.

I know that Zen and MLG are like me in the fact that they like to respond to every comment they get on their works. With that in mind, I was back in my email this morning checking to see if a) Zen had replied to me, and if so, b) if there was anything to reply back to in return. The answer to both was yes, FYI, but that's not the point.

The point was that a different email caught my eye.

Just after midnight this morning, MLG uploaded a new story as well! As far as I know, this wasn't a response to Zen's story for her. It was just coincidental that she also uploaded so shortly after.

Summary: “I promised myself I wouldn’t wait to do this a second longer than I had to.”
“Adrien, what are you talking… about…” The last word died on her lips as she turned around.

I knew I should have just started straight into this blog post so I could actually be done by noon, but it was only about 1000 words. I HAD to see what MLG had posted. So, I had breakfast and read a cute little fic.

ALL. THE. FLUUUUUUUUUUFFFFFFFFFF.

Adrien's proposal was just perfection for the kid. It was so sweet and sincere and had nods to their meeting. And there was the Rule of Three used in reference to him referring to her as his friend, his princess, and his partner.

The imagery MLG painted in my head was fantastic. So much so that I now REEEEEEAAAAALLY want to physically see it. If you know a fanartist, or are one yourself, and want a cute story to turn into a fancomic, I HIGHLY recommend this drabble.

Regardless of if there's artwork that comes out of it, you should totally read this story for happy feels to carry you though this trying time.

So.... yeah. Those are my fic recs for this week, I guess. They're all fairly short reads, which works for me since my days run pretty much the same as they always have.

OH! I also absorbed some non-Miraculous Ladybug story content this week when Hubby and I went to see Disney/Pixar's Onward. I knew the premise of the movie - two elf brothers go on a quest to find the last traces of magic in order to bring back their deceased father - I even made a Fullmetal Alchemist joke when I found out about the premise. So, I knew this movie would be a touch hard on me. For those who don't know, my father died of cancer when I was 13. I didn't care how rough this would be, I was still determined to watch this movie anyway... and I was a wreck!

Oddly enough, the desire of the brothers to get their dad back, and the limited interactions with him they did have wasn't the emotional part for me. The bonding between the brothers, and the regrets they had about not having enough time with their dad was what killed me. I'm choking up again just thinking about the movie.

Between this and Coco, Pixar is trying to kill me with these Dead Father movies.... and between Onward and Frozen, Disney is trying to kill me with these Disconnected Siblings Bond movies...

I LOVE YA, SIS!

I'm so glad I was able to squeak the movie in before the theaters were all shut down for at least 2 weeks. Pixar never disappoints with their new content. Their sequels? Hit-or-miss, but the original stories? Love them all!

Well, I hope this epic helped ease your boredom while cooped up with these self-isolation mandates. Stay well, my friends. I'll catch ya next week.
