Proud Shout Outs and Story Suggestions

Generated by Bitmoji
I know that it's the final day of Pride Month, and that this has been a particularly hard month for various reasons. Still, I hope people were able to embrace who they were and found safe spaces to just be them. Enjoy this final day of Pride Month, friends, but please carry that pride and love and strength throughout the rest of the year as well.

You are loved exactly how you are.

Getting to the point of this blog, I'd like to apologize for missing last week. I had no clue what to talk about because, you guessed it, I haven't written a dang thing. As I tried to mentally plot out what to discuss, I figured I'd check in on a Facebook message from ChibiSunnie. Next thing I know, I'm sending the poor girl an 11pg letter and it was time to pick Hubby up from work! I had debated working on a blog post after picking him up and doing our grocery shopping. Problem there, though, is a) we wouldn't be home until after 1pm, b) it's been taking me 4+ hours to write my posts lately, so this would take up my entire afternoon, c) I still wasn't sure what to talk about, d) I had chores I really needed to get back into a consistent routine with again, and e) I was already getting exhausted and needed something mindless to do.

So, no blog post last week.

The week before, I had continued working on my blog post after picking Hubby up from work, and it kept me until about 3:30 to finish. By the time I was done, I was so drained I ended up napping for about an hour or so. I just didn't have the energy to even promote it. All the more reason I didn't want to bother last week. So, if you did manage to find and read that post from a couple of weeks ago, thank you. This is why I have that email alert option, so you don't miss a post even when I'm too lazy to promote my own work!

Anyway, here we are again, with me STILL not writing anything. I was tempted to also skip today because, well, I'm sure you are sick and tired of reading me go "meh, no writing this week..." for months on end. I know I'm tired of writing it.

However, first and foremost, since I didn't write last week, I didn't promote the week before, and I totally forgot I was writing in June that first week, I wanted to make sure to get today's blog post done in order to have a proper "Happy Pride Month" in just before the month ended.

Secondly, I needed to make sure I got a shout out to my mom. Yesterday marked 25years since she was declared officially cancer-free; kicking breast cancer's ass when she was younger than I am now!
Generated by Bitmoji
I'm bummed that this year Hubby and I weren't able to go visit her, for safety reasons among others, but I did get a chance to chat with her last night. She sounded like she managed to still properly celebrate. She told me this year was the one she was most looking forward to:
Mom: "Five years meant I could breathe [the cancer probably wasn't coming back]. Ten years meant I could ease up [on my vigilance]. Fifteen years meant I was probably safe. Twenty years meant it was highly unlikely it would return. Twenty-five years meant I could finally relax."
Well, you did it, Mom! You can start to relax a bit. May the next 25 years go a LOT smoother for you, and a lot less stressful.

Along with those shout outs, I also had three stories I wanted to promote. None of them are mine, of course, but all three are great reads and on-going projects.

First up, we have a two-fer from zenmisery.

FINALLY having both the time and mental energy to read some fanfic, I started up Zen's story Dressed to Confess.
Summary: A lonely and forlorn Chat comes to visit his Princess and ends up keeping her company every night leading up to her last-ditch effort to capture Adrien’s attention.

Rating: Teen
Current Word Count: 8548
Status: On-going; 4 chapters; updated every week or so
This is an awesome story with just the perfect balance of rot-your-teeth-out fluff and breaks-your-heart angst. Adrien has been feeling particularly dejected at home, so, as Chat Noir, he goes to visit Marinette. He knows she's making an elaborate and gorgeous gown in order to make herself - as she put it - look as beautiful as possible before FINALLY confessing how she feels to her crush. She figures it's all or nothing. If the dress turns out the way she wants, and she feels she's going to look as gorgeous a she's gonna get, and he still rejects her, then she'll finally start to move on.

Chat Noir of course has no clue who she's talking about, and assumes she's talking about Luka, and gets small pangs of jealousy that "this idiot" hasn't already realized how amazing Marinette is and scooped her up. As the story progresses, Chat Noir is all but convinced to do the same with Ladybug: confess one last time, and if she still rejects him it's time to finally move on. The decision to give up on Ladybug becomes easier for Chat Noir to make when he starts to realize that maybe he has fallen in love with Marinette.

The fourth chapter just went up, so I haven't had a moment to read it yet, but the story is already so lovely, and I'm curious how the Love Square is going to collapse in on itself as the story progresses.

Now, while I have been waiting for updates on Dressed to Confess, I've been reading the other story that Zen recently started up. Excuse the pun, but this one is a much darker story overall.
Summary: Lost in complete darkness, Marinette comes across a child who has just been through the same ordeal she went through. Except, she doesn’t know what that ordeal is, how to find his mother, or how she’s going to explain if he ever sees her face when he’s already identified her as Ladybug and she can’t find Tikki.

Current Word Count: 8266
Status: On-going; 4 chapters; updated every week or so
Talk about a consistent writer, right? Both stories updated at about the same pace, both have 4 chapters up right now, and both are roughly the same word-count.

Anyway, this story is a gritty and intense story, especially compared to Dressed to Confess. Personally, I am amazed by her ability to switch story vibes as regularly as she does.

In the Dark deals with a great mystery of what exactly happened to everyone. Marinette wakes up with a headache; probably a concussion. Tikki is missing, with no explanation yet as to how or why; not even Marinette remembers. She then has to navigate the pitch black in a rubble-filled collapsed building with a small child in tow she quickly stumbles upon. The boy Luc had asked if she was Ladybug, and she went with that persona despite the lack of powers or suit, as a means to keep the child calm. The "lie" gets a bit more complicated when she runs into Nino in the dark, and then hears Chat Noir's voice. If she's brought into the light before she can find Tikki and properly transform, her secret may be out. She has more to worry about, though, such as the safety of herself, her friends, the child, and his mother. Finally, since she couldn't remember if the damage was caused by an akuma, Marinette has no clue if she can repair the damage that Paris has suffered. The potential inability to repair what happened becomes heavier as Marinette's head wound seems to get worse, and one of her friends is found injured.

I am on the edge of my seat reading through everything, wondering what could possibly go wrong next. It is completely gut-wrenching and the hits come frequently, but in the best way as the stakes keep increasing. The current chapter pattern has also been bouncing between Marinette's POV and Alya's which is great as the two best friends are currently separated. This way you can also get a glimpse of what the rest of Marinette's class is up to during the destruction. The mysteries of what caused everything, how Marinette is going to get out of her identity predicament, where Tikki even is, can the damage be repaired, how are they going to collectively make it to safety, and will everyone be alright just keeps me wanting more.

And when it gets too intense, you can just hop back over to Dressed to Confess or some of her other fluffy stories to get the warm fuzzies again.

Jumping fandoms, Cyhyr uploaded her latest chapter of Displaced by Time.
Summary:
Vesper Scienta wanted nothing more out of life than to make sure her charge and best friend, Prince Aster Amicitia, was happy. She would follow him, always, and keep him safe, as her appointment as Shield dictates she must. She was happy. They were happy.
Then they found the Messengers.
Now she's flitting through time itself, racing against the weakening pulse of the Crystal. It's been almost nineteen years since the Dawn Returned, and the world needs saving again. Vesper just doesn't understand why it has to be her, or why the Messengers separated her and Aster, or why they paired her with the daughter of the Marshal and the son of the King of Light - both from different times.
Time's running out. The star will burn. Raise the dawn, become the night, restore the Crystal.
Vesper just wants to be with Aster again.

As a refresher, this is a mostly original story taking place within the world of Final Fantasy XV. It follows a party of original characters, with the canon characters sprinkled in as support and timeline guideposts. Very much like how X-Future was.

I do not follow this fandom at all, and my knowledge of this game specifically was mostly learned via Cyhyr's Tumblr posts, but I am still adoring this story. There are time travel and parallel world shenanigans, and parallel stories to the main game storyline. I'm always a sucker for those types of stories. I've also already grown to love Cy's original characters, and I'm rooting them on. I'm curious about their different timelines, and how their parallel universes both differ and connect. We also haven't had any confirmation yet that the timeline the trio is currently on is part of Vesper's or Voti's past, or if this is a completely separate universe than even either of them are from. It's complicated, but intriguing as you try to figure it out alongside the characters. There's also this struggle between duty to save the planet as a whole versus taking the chance to save a loved one, and already two of the characters have been struggling with that choice.

Things get even more complicated in the third chapter as one of the characters tries to save a parent who never actually fathered children in the timeline they're currently on, but you can still sense this emotional cry to save him regardless, and you hope that they succeed in doing so.

I'm sure the story is much more entertaining for any who played the game and can see the game story plot points played out in a different perspective, as well as see how Vesper's actions - and that of her partymates - either affect the timeline, or cause a canonical event to happen regardless (or because of) her intervention. Still, without knowing the canonical story, I'm enjoying this hardy read. It is a bit confusing for non-fandom members, mostly because it's rough to gauge where the characters are in relation to different important cities and the significance of their locations across the whole continent's layout, but it is still written well enough to be followable and entertaining.

Now to get my OWN writing in gear.

Mouse lit a fire under her own butt this past week, and sent me an article about persevering against fear. I'm going to try to follow her lead and see if I can find time to finally just sit and think and create again.

I do miss it.

As I try to re-center myself this July and re-find that 2017/2018 self that managed to create and complete Peeping Tomcat, I also wish to leave you with this reminder:

Come Check Out These Fics!

I ran out of time last week - in ALL THREE POSTS - to talk about the fanfics I really enjoyed reading this month. Since most of last week was also spent working on all of those blog posts, I didn't really do much else.

So, welcome to a special Story Recommendations blog post this week!
Generated by Bitmoji
As I mentioned in my previous posts last week, I tried to avoid reading other Fluff Week stories at first, afraid they would influence my own story. Plus, I felt like the time I was spending reading could have been better spent writing. I did, however, go back after posting my 'Concert' prompt story, and read what others came up with for the same prompt.

If you read those posts from last week, you already know that a majority of the stories I came across had very similar premises to mine: sad Adrien plays at his piano, Marinette/Ladybug stumbles upon his performance, he plays for her, they end up snuggling on the piano bench.

There was one story in particular though, that really got to me when I read their version of that premise. For their 'Concert' prompt, LittleLottieWrites added a great opening spark to potential Adrienette. The story is told through Marinette's point of view, but switches slightly in the closing line, and it is beautiful! It enticed me enough that I subscribed to their story, and I'm so glad I did.

The story is put together very much like mine: a series of one-shots that tell an over-arcing story of these two idiots finally figuring out their love for each other as the Love Square collapses into a happy couple. The progression Lottie has is fantastic. Like I said, right from the get-go, there's a hint that maybe Adrien IS seeing Marinette as more than just a simple friend, and the other chapters say the same about Marinette and Chat Noir.

The second story prompt 'Trust' uses an akuma attack as an awesome way of bringing in some glorious Ladrien content. Then Lottie has the 'Flowers' prompt showcase some sweet and playful MariChat along with a little Adrienette. The best part for me though is how it wonderfully shows off how Extra Adrien likes to be, both in and out of his superhero persona. The 'Your Voice' prompt went in the direction of Ladrien again, but with hints of Adrienette. Also, I'm a sucker for the trope "the characters unknowingly say praising things about each other's secret identity to them" so that was a nice added bonus.

As one would expect with the prompt 'Comfort', that chapter/story got a touch angsty. Ladybug is lamenting that it's been a year since getting their Miraculous, and they're no closer to stopping Hawkmoth. It's a really sweet LadyNoir bonding chapter/story. The last line is a bit of a gut-punch for Chat Noir, but that just makes the chapter all the better.

The AU chapter was fantastic! Lottie tried out the Enemies AU concept as a sort of pilot for a potential full-story. There was something about this concept/chapter/story that really spoke to me. The only word I could think to use in my chapter review as 'visceral'. You could just FEEL the excitement and anxiety the characters had. You could see Chat Noir slinking around like a cat on the prowl. My own heart began to race as Chat Noir's crush on Ladybug came into play. It was just so well done, and I'm excited to see where Lottie is going to take this favored AU trope in the fandom.

Getting back on track with their main story, Lottie finishes Fluff Week with a reveal inspired by the anime Sailor Moon. The second I saw the words 'reveal' and 'Sailor Moon' I instantly started bouncing around in my chair squeeing "Elevator scene! Elevator scene!" because I'm THAT dork. If you know Sailor Moon, you more-or-less know exactly where Lottie went with this story/chapter. If you don't, I won't ruin it for you. Go check it out.

My only qualm with this final chapter is I feel like Lottie leaned a touch TOO far into the Sailor Moon inspiration, so the characters seem a bit.... off. Otherwise, it's a very lovely piece, and I greatly enjoyed the full story. It was quite the ride!

The next story I first read while going through the other 'Concert' prompt pieces. I didn't truly start paying attention to it after seeing their take on the prompt 'Trust,' however. That second chapter really grabbed me and wouldn't let go.

Chasing Feelings by CoffeeComicsGalore
a 13,693 word story

I want to clarify that I have nothing against their 'Concert' prompt chapter. It was a lovely bit of MariChat where they go to a Jagged Stone concert together. It is sweet, and I enjoyed it. I was planning on keeping an eye out for Coffee via the Love Square Fluff Week Tumblr event page. However, after reading their 'Trust' prompt chapter, and realizing how easy it was going to be for me to lose track of them on the event page, I knew I needed to just subscribe to the story.

At first, Coffee didn't do anything terribly different compared to a lot of other writers for the 'Trust' prompt: they wrote about a trust fall. However, the energy poured into the chapter caught me, and what made me hit that subscribe button was what happened after the trust fall. Ladybug and Chat Noir were having fun. They were screwing around. They got to be TEENS, instead of just superheroes. Sure, they could do that in their civilian forms as well, but they have more FREEDOM in their superhero personas, and no matter how responsible Marinette is, she's still a 14yo kid, and it's just too tempting to just be FREE for her to not succumb to that feeling every once in a while. So it was fantastic to see them just innocently play.

Chapter 3 and the prompt 'Flowers' is when the romance truly kicked off. Chat Noir had started up a tradition to help destress and cheer up Ladybug, but Ladybug nearly catches Adrien prepping for the tradition. He recovers, and there's glorious mutual-blushing Ladrien content, before he gifts something to Ladybug. There's also underlying hints towards Adrienette that are lovely. This chapter starts the Love Square slowly caving in on itself.

For 'Your Voice', Coffee does a sort of reverse of what a lot of people did for 'Concert'. Adrien is the one who stumbles upon Marinette creating music: she's singing. He's entranced by the sound of her voice and you can tell that this chapter is when Adrien finally realizes his feelings for Marinette. It's so sweet, and watching ADRIEN be the one flustered around MARINETTE is fantastic.

Of course there's confusion and miscommunication between these two idiots, so the 'Comfort' chapter get's a touch angsty. Adrien freaks out about potentially loving Marinette, and what that could mean for his "love" for Ladybug. Meanwhile, Marinette cries on Chat Noir's shoulder about how she'll never get to be with the boy she loves.

For 'AU Day', an akuma attacks and transforms Paris into various Disney fairy tale stories and characters. It's basically Kingdom Hearts in akuma form. Adrien is Disney's version of Rapunzel, and Marinette/Ladybug is Mulan. There's some Ladrien, some Jealous-Ladybug LadyNoir action, and official Adrienette.

The story concludes with Adrien and Marinette being the PERFECT dorks as they prank their classmates, but this leads to one of the most randomly great reveals I've read. It's so stupid that it's pretty much perfect!

It's a fun ride.

As much as I enjoyed those other two stories, I have to admit my absolute favorite Fluff Week story had to be the Aged Up story told by a pair of fantastic writers.

Two Hundred Seventeen Days by mostlovedgirl and zenmisery
a 42,164 word novella
Plagg is so done. He has been watching his and Tikki’s chosens drift apart ever since they graduated from that lycée place last summer. Maybe all they need is a nudge in the right direction. Purr-haps he might even convince his Sugarcube to help him.

Marinette is eagerly anticipating the start of Jagged Stone’s concert. She isn’t expecting to run into an old friend who she hasn’t seen for two hundred seventeen days (not that she’s been counting).

Adrien is enjoying his freedom now that he is nineteen and living on his own, but it is a little lonely. He unexpectedly runs into an old friend… and keeps running into her. Why can’t he stop thinking about her?
This story actually has 8 chapters because the duo included a prologue that sets up the whole premise: Plagg convincing Tikki to help him set their holders up so the Love Square shenanigans can end already! Each chapter also ends with Plagg and Tikki recapping the chapter with some new perspective of the events, as well as hints to what they're plotting next for our love birds.

I have to give these two ladies mad props because I think this is indeed the fluffiest Fluff story I've read, while still having plenty of drama to drive the story forward. I spent so much time just squeeing throughout their chapters that I ended up - unintentionally - writing running commentaries for each of my chapter reviews.

But, we're now Tumblr mutuals, so it all worked out. Given how many of MY readers have become friends after going back and forth talking about my stories and theirs, I, of all people, should have known that gushing uncontrollably about someone's work is the easiest way to their heart.

Anyway, as the summary suggests, they started off the official story with the prompt 'Concert' seeing Adrien and Marinette "coincidentally" going alone to the same Jagged Stone concert. That's where they first rekindle their friendship, but there's also WONDERFUL Adrienette moments that felt natural and casual, but were just SOOOOO deliciously fluffy!

Then, for 'Trust', the gang all gathers for a Mylene and Ivan wedding! My original side-ship! I love DJWifi and all, but MyVan was my original jam! That alone hooked me, but the sweet - and slightly jealous - Adrienette moments continued, and suckered me in further.

'Flowers' brought in some OCs that zenmisery created for another of her ML stories, and I have to say this OC crew is fantastic! I loved them all, and they were hilarious in the best way. Also, Adrien's obliviousness knows no bounds, and it's amazing! It's also the true start of Adrien's Chat Noir starting to show up more and more around Marinette, which adds such a great flavor to the mix.

We have a pseudo-official Adrienette in the chapter 'Your Voice' and seeing those two stumble around each other - as well as Alya jumping to wild conclusions - is fantastic. We also FINALLY get to see the LadyNoir dynamic for this aged-up story, and it's really sweet and caring.

The 'Comfort' chapter made me think so much of my husband and how amazing just quiet nights at home could be. Adrien is a prince and the world doesn't deserve him. Marinette is strong and self-reliant, but it was lovely to see her drop her walls enough to allow someone else to care for her. The whole thing was sweet and healed my soul a little.

The take on 'AU Day' for this story was FANTASTIC. I mentioned this in Sunday's post, but mlg and Zen masterfully thought out of the box for their use of that prompt without it disrupting the story they were telling. As a way to avoid unwanted advancements on both Adrien and Marinette, the pair spend the day claiming to be a couple, escalating from long-term dating to engaged to secretly married, depending on the extreme the situation called for. We get a couple more OCs in this chapter. One is supposed to be a sleaze, and was written so well that I actually shuddered whenever he was in the story. The other OC was magnificent and basically the voice of the Fandom. I loved her so much! Also, seeing how easily Adrien and Marinette could convince everyone around them that they were madly in love newlyweds was perfection.

After their rouse, life got a touch more complicated for the duo, especially when the daily prompt of 'Reveal' took effect. Seeing them sort through that, sort through their own feelings, and grow closer was gloriously satisfying. Having them battle with themselves as to what the reveal would - and should - mean for their relationship was JUUUUUUUUST the right sprinkle of angst. Tikki even added an extra level of complication into the mix that was borderline hilarious as Marinette slowly put two-and-two together. Zen even used inspiration from her own love life for the conclusion of the story, and it just works so well. My only qualm is that the actual reveal was a touch handwaved since their relationship was the priority of the story, and the chapter was already running long.

I don't want to spoil anything, but there's also a lot of sexual undertones throughout the story, especially the last two chapters of it. Seeing how much Adrien respects Marinette, and how much she trusts him was beautiful. The decision making on whether or not they were ready for anything, and how that translated to their other physical interactions was just so THEM, and it showcased a side of attraction that is rarely explored anymore.

All-in-all, I just ADORED this story. I'm glad to see that it's starting to pick up steam and recommendations, because it was far too undervalued when I first started reading it. I'm also amazed at the fact that it's two writers tag-teaming chapters, and yet it feels like a cohesive, solitary story, without many writing-voice changes that might throw readers off. If I didn't know better, I could be convinced the whole thing was written by just one author, which is a feat in and of itself. They were so in sync with each other. A great duo. Just, super well done. This was also the only story out of the three that actually included Valentine's Day within the story, having Plagg and Tikki race to try to get Adrienette as an official couple before Valentine's Day ended.

Also-also... Seeing Plagg soft and protective of Adrien makes my heart soar. He's my favorite character for a reason, and both mlg and Zen treated him right.

I still have to go back through the Fluff Week event page to find other stories to consume, and I have to go through the other Lovebugs and Snake Charmers event stories as well. For now, though? Those are the three that really stuck with me for Fluff Week.

How about OUTSIDE of Valentine's Day stories, though?

Well, I have two more treats for you fine folks! I haven't had time to comment about them here yet this month, but earlier both Immortal Bonds and Discordant Sonata updated.

Immortal Bonds by Taurus Pixie
a 5,233 word on-going story
Accidentally selling her soul to the demon prince Chat Noir wasn't the smartest thing Marinette could have done. But it's not long before Marinette begins to realize there's more to Chat Noir, and the demonic world she's now found herself in, than meets the eye.

AU. *New Version*
In Pixie's newer version of Immortal Bonds, the second chapter she recently posted sets up the truly eerie feeling of the overall story. The new prologue had Marinette trapped in some sort of ethereal plain; a limbo somewhere; a waiting room for spirits, or something to that affect. Already creepy, right? Well, the new first chapter doesn't just start with Marinette at a slumber party messing with a Ouiji board. Now we get to see a bit of her normal day-to-day before things really hit the fan with that whole "selling her soul to the demon prince" thing.

We also meet Master Fu, who is just as mysterious as he was in the show, but this time he has an added level of creepy. Is he potentially scouting out for Chat Noir? Is he planning on sacrificing Marinette to the Demon Prince? Is he a demon in disguise? Will he be her savoir with taming Chat Noir once Marinette is tied to him? Whatever is going on, it's clear that Fu is certainly more than a frail old man Marinette simply saved one day. He'll be part of her life again, for sure.

The chapter is a lovely mix of Classic Miraculous Ladybug but with hints of something darker laying underneath in this AU.

The story is fairly short still as of right now, so it's the perfect time to jump on board. Just be warned, Pixie's year has NOT gone smoothly thus far, so please be patient with her updating schedule. She has a LOT going on. You can keep up with her and her updating via her blog: Taurus Pixie: Pixie's Chronicle.

The other story I follow is also an AU where Ladybug and Chat Noir aren't necessarily on the same side; at least, not at first.

Discordant Sonata by EdenDaphne
a 75,153 word on-going story
“Ladybug… I… What choice do I have? Hawkmoth, he’s ruthless and determined. And he’s… he’s not just my boss. He’s family. If I defied him, what would I do? Where would I go? He’d take my miraculous away if I even tried. I don’t have a choice.”

Enemies AU where Chat has always worked with Hawkmoth from the very beginning.
This Enemies AU is unique because it's clear from the onset that Chat Noir doesn't want to fight Ladybug. He'd gladly fight as her partner if he had the freedom to do so. It has it's fluffy moments, sure, but it's mostly a heartbreaking, angsty story with underlying hope that pushes both the characters and the reader forward.

I won't really talk much about the chapters updated this past month, because it will spoil it for anyone new to the story. However, I will comment on the fact that Eden did update earlier this month, left us hanging on quite the cliffhanger, and then mercifully concluded that tension in another chapter a week later. It was an exciting akuma battle, and Eden included a Chat Noir power that was thought of during the concept phases, but never translated into the show. I hope eventually Chat Noir powers up enough to use it, though, because it's an awesome power, especially the way Eden described its use. The power was dubbed "Black Hole" in the concept art.
ML PV Concept Art of Chat Noir's power Black Hole
Along with Eden's lovely writing, Discordant Sonata is unique in that each chapter is named after a different musical concept; each one setting up the theme of that chapter. Eden also includes mood music for the various scenes within every chapter. The music is not needed for the reader to enjoy the story she's telling, but, much like her illustrations in past fanfic collabs, Eden's mood music choices certainly elevate the emotions of the scene(s) the music is picked out for.

Eden is still relatively new to the fanfiction writing game, and yet this story is just so fantastically crafted to just YANK at those heartstrings. Also, the characters are aged up, so there's a bit more at stake. Chat Noir has been an enemy of Paris for YEARS in this Enemy AU. Ladybug has been battling solo for YEARS in an epic 1-v-2 battle... 1-v-3 if you count Hawkmoth and the akumatized supervillain as separate. Trying to turn Chat Noir against Hawkmoth in order to fight alongside Ladybug is MUCH more complicated than in a lot of Enemy AU fics. Plus, with the characters being older, there's always that hint of more sexual tension than there would be if they were still only 14. They're still innocent little beans though, so nothing ever really goes farther than that hot-hot tension.

I know that Discordant Sonata is a bit of a read by now, but I promise you it is worth it.

Also, added bonus for a lot of the stories I shared today: Immortal Bonds and Discordant Sonata are AU stories, and Two Hundred Seventeen Days is an aged up story. In all three cases, you only really need to know the vaguest information about the show to understand the story. Things that you probably learned just from me rambling about the show here. So, if you aren't in the fandom, you're in luck! You can still check out these glorious bits of work! I'm sure the authors would get a kick out of someone outside the fandom leaving them a like/kudos and comment.

Speaking of not being in the fandom but still enjoying something, there is also a non-ML story I've been reading.

Displaced by Time by Cyhyr
a 14,713 word on-going story

A lot of people seem to be avoiding or otherwise ignoring this story because the main characters are all OCs created by Cy, which is totally unfair! As unfair as Peeping Tomcat being avoided because it's written in first person. I get that 90% of fic writers get OCs and 1st person horribly wrong, but what about those of us that actually do it quite well?

Cy is one of those people that does OCs well. I'm invested in them. They are each unique in their personalities, and they're all flawed. They're diverse enough that I can usually tell who is speaking even before I get to the tag or action. I'm rooting for Vesper, and I'm greatly enjoying Eleos. Voti I'm still warming up to, but he has potential. Aster we didn't know for too long, but I liked him - and his relationship with Vesper - enough that I'm hoping the two are reunited.

The use of OCs allows Cy to really tell HER story within the world of Final Fantasy XV. A parallel story that takes place alongside the game, and silently influences it; much like the Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars episode. That kind of leeway also means she can slowly bring people into that world who never played the games. Each of the characters are from different times and from different realities. As Cy introduces the world that each character came from and how they differ from each other, she's simultaneously introducing the reader to the world and to canon character dynamics in a way that doesn't require prior knowledge. I mean, sure, prior knowledge would help, and would allow you to catch Easter Eggs within her story, just as it would for all fanfiction, but that knowledge isn't REQUIRED.

My only caveat is that the story, since it's dealing with a knotted up time stream and visions from and of divine beings, does get a little confusing to keep track of. That's done intentionally so that you can become as disoriented as Vesper, and so you can try to sort things out alongside her. The mystery of what is going on and how to fix it, as well as the concern of what parts of history should the characters mess with, and which ones will only make things worse in the future, really pulls you in.

I am not remotely in the Final Fantasy fandom. I've only ever played the first two on my Nintendo DS, and I gave up about half-way through the second one. I own FF VII: Advent Children and more-or-less know the story of Cloud and Crew from the 7th game, but that maxes out my knowledge of the franchise.

I'm still adoring this story, and it's truly getting criminally small amounts of attention, so please give Cy some love as well.

Okay, time to tag out my story recommendations, and tag in some more info about my own writing.

After a solid week of working on blog posts trying to recap my weeks, talking about the research I put into my Lukanette story, and how I was inspired for my various Fluff Week stories, I FINALLY stopped using this blog as a means to procrastinate.

I started working on my 'AU Day' prompt story yesterday. I got myself a bit worn out throughout the day - still not feeling 100%, I'm actually feeling a bit sleepy right now - so I didn't get as far as I would have liked in the story. It IS getting written though. I don't know if I'll be able to complete it and my other two prompt stories before the end of the month, though.

I have my normal "day off; time to run errands" day today, and I have writing group, so I'm not sure how much more free time I have to work on my writing tonight. Tomorrow I work, then zumba, then the lone night I actually watch TV. I watch The Masked Singer, followed by Lego Masters; just the second half of LM if I didn't get a chance to shower before TMS. I then close out the evening with The Magicians.

Thursday would normally be D&D night, so I wouldn't really have any outside-of-work writing time regardless, but we're actually cancelling D&D AGAIN so that a group of us can go see the My Hero Academia movie. That will probably be a late night.

I DO have Friday off, so maybe I'll crank out the last of my stories then. My apartment DOES need a freshening up as well though, so trying to split my time will be tricky, especially if Hubby wants to hang out too. We'll see how I end up prioritizing.

As of right now, though, I'm about 1600 words into my 'AU Day' prompt story, and I pretty much JUST got to the inciting incident after setting up the world of the story/chapter. I'm not sure I want to know how massive this project is going to be.

I should probably get back to it though, huh?

Well, tomorrow is Ash Wednesday within the Christian community, which means today is Donut Day! Or 'Fat Tuesday' or 'Paczki Day' or 'Fasnacht Day'... depending on where on the East Coast you are, I guess. It's also Marti Gras! So break out that vibrant purple, gold, and green!

Me? I'm sticking with Donut Day. Take the day to indulge. With the way the winter and 2020 has been shaping up, you've probably earned a "cheat day".

I went back to my spring-like Bitmoji clothes there because it's been gorgeous this week! Anyway, I guess I'll catch you all next Tuesday. Have fun, everyone, and let me know if you also enjoyed any of those stories, or if there's others I NEED to read.

Creating an Oral Story

A couple days ago I was asked how I manage to keep myself writing.

I'm going to be honest: I don't.

I'm sure you can see where this blog post is going to go.

Nope. No writing this week. Last Tuesday I worked and didn't make it home until about 7pm. I then quickly had dinner, and turned around and did laundry. I didn't finally have some downtime until a little after 10pm. I wasn't about to start writing anything then. Wednesday I worked, and then dinner, and then I fought with my laptop for about an hour while Wolfhearted and Omnibladestrike were finishing up their new character builds with Hubby. Then we all hung out for about an hour before the return of The Magicians on SYFY channel. By the time the episode was done, it was 11pm. Thursday was once again work, then dinner, then D&D until 11pm.

Friday I finally had a day off after a 10-day work week. I spent the morning paying bills, balancing my finances, and all that other fun Adulting stuff. I also tried out the ocarina my mom got me for Christmas while there was no one around to annoy. I got started on some of my chore backlog, but that was interrupted by my father-in-law popping in. My momentum killed, I fetched Hubby from work, did a load of dishes, watched a 45min YouTube video by one of the channels I follow, and promptly passed out for nearly 2hrs. Guess I needed to catch up on sleep too, huh? I then walked Hubby to his Friday Night Magic pre-release tournament a little before 6pm, and hung out at the store for a touch. When I got home I MEANT to either get back to cleaning, or maybe work on some writing.

Instead I spent pretty much the entire evening - all four hours of it - playing video games, because I haven't really done that hobby in a while. I then showered, quickly made up a picnicked dinner for Hubby's midnight tournament - something he wasn't sure he was staying for at first; there were two tournament options for the pre-release weekend - walked it down to him, hung out for a tick again, and then went home to finally crash.

Saturday I also had the day off; a rare 2 days in a row, and even rarer Saturday off. While I let Hubby sleep in - I think he got home about 4am? - I had breakfast, and finally took down our Christmas tree. It may seem pathetic that it kept me until January 18th to do so, but I didn't decorate the darn thing until Christmas Eve, and last year I didn't take the tree down until Easter... so having it "up" for less than a month, and down in January, is quite the improvement, I think.

The whole thing is so tedious too since we have to use a fake tree; Hubby being horribly allergic to evergreen trees and all. Between taking down the ornaments, packing them away, collapsing the branches, dismantling the tree, and vacuuming up all the plastic needles that STILL manage to fall off this thing like it's a real tree, the whole project kept me over 2hrs. I then got some dishes done, some more vacuuming, and then I made lunch for Hubby and I after waking him up.

We then had a fairly quick pop-in from some friends to FINALLY exchange Christmas gifts. After they left, I braved the snow to head back out to Walmart to try to find a tote large enough for our dang tree since the box it is normally stored in finally fell apart. The tree itself is over a decade old, after all. Navigating the bad roads, and Walmart, and trying to find a tote that would fit the tree AND my car, and then wandering Walmart trying to find my dang glove that fell out of my pocket was quite the exhausting trip. I made it home with just enough time to trim and shape my now horribly chipped nails before Omni and Goob came over for our normal Anime Night.

Sunday I was back at work, but not for terribly long: the store is only open 5hrs. I took advantage of the later start of the work day by casually watching some YouTube videos while getting ready for work and having something small to eat. Then work. Then I took Hubby to work, and watched the American football championship games. I enjoyed being able to watch the second half of the AFC championship game, but I actually found the NFC game a bit boring with how one-sided it was, also the Packers just weren't playing to their normal standard, I didn't think.

Still, I DID watch the games; casually. While doing so, I COULD have folded laundry or other such chore that I could have brought in front of the TV. Or I could have worked on writing since I was only half-paying attention to the games anyway. Instead, I turned my mind off, and played video games pretty much the entire time.

I had the place to myself. The 6:30 game wasn't terribly entertaining to me. I could have done just about ANYTHING else uninterrupted. I played video games. I win at life.

Ironically, it was while I was avoiding even really thinking about anything that I was asked how I get myself to keep writing.

Yep. You saw right. I was asked how I get myself to keep writing while I was actively avoiding it.... Oh, Irony....

The entire week was pretty much me just... not writing. I've stopped trying to force it. My brain needs to recoup from the franticness of the past few months. I don't want to burn myself out already, so soon into the new year. So, I just don't push it.

I am focused on cleaning my apartment so I'm not so stressed and de-moralized whenever I come home. Yesterday was Bedroom Day. I now (mostly) have a floor. I still have some baskets to sort through - one for clothes to see if they still fit, one of towels and wash cloths to be put away in the kitchen and bathroom, one of clothes to but away in the closet after I re-iron them, and one of socks I need to find the mates to - but I no longer have to climb in and out of bed via the foot of the mattress. We can also access our dresser drawers again after I re-organized them so they can properly close/open once more. Also... more dusting and vacuuming....

It's amazing how much stress is lifted with the simplest things, like, oh, I dunno, seeing your floor again!

The bedroom - plus a couple of breaks for meals and cleaning dishes - took up a large chunk of my day, but I feel productive, and less stressed. So why try to push it by also forcing myself to get some narrative writing in as well? I'm not doing this professionally yet, and once I am, writing would be my normal work day, wouldn't it? I mean, I'd have time specifically set aside for little to no distractions whilst I write.

Right now, though? Right now writing is my escape. It is my de-stressor. It is my passion. If I'm not feeling any of that, then what's the point? Why turn writing into a chore? I think part of my problem in the past was pushing myself too hard. I might not be pushing hard enough right now, and I DO need to produce SOMETHING soon because I AM going a bit stir crazy, but I'm also still recovering from the holidays.

So, I will continue to de-stress in other ways, such as FINALLY getting my apartment back in order so it's a calming space for me again. Or by FINALLY playing video games, since I truly do enjoy them and rarely prioritize time for them. Or just by napping, because I went from virtually NEVER drinking coffee to both drinking many cups a day AND drinking 5-Hour Energy shots while at work and can't make coffee. I'm all caffeined up, and it's probably not the healthiest thing. Naps are probably better.... That and going to bed before midnight if I'm trying to be up by 7am each day.

Besides, if I'm being entirely truthful here, it's not like I COMPLETELY took a hiatus from writing.

I actually got a bit TOO involved in Kriv's ode to Cutter.

Yes, Tuesday I was training the new employees, so I didn't have the downtime to write at work then. Wednesday, however, I tried to crank out the Epic of Cutter Von Richtor so I had it in time for our next D&D session. I managed to sort through the soft role play that Wolfhearted and I did of Cutter and Kriv just chatting, and created a sort of bullet-pointed list of Cutter Facts that Kriv potentially knew. I also found a free download for a modern translation of Beowulf, and started reading through that to help inspire me for how I might want to format Kriv's homage.

Side Note: the modern translation I downloaded on Wednesday, and therefore the one I was originally referencing, was this one by Thomas Meyer that you can actually download for free, legally, from the publisher. However, while working on this blog post, I could not remember where I found that free version of Beowulf. I wanted to link to it, so I hit up Google to try to retrace my steps in finding it in the first place. In so doing, I discovered another modern translation that is also free to download via Project Gutenburg. This version, by Ernest J. B. Kirtlan, is written in prose in order to simplify the story even further, whereas Meyer's version tries to keep the epic poem in its original formatting and cadence. You have a variety of options to download Kirtlan's version - I downloaded it for the Kindle - but I never was a fan of the Kindle formatting, which is why I'm still waiting for Ali Luke to release paperback versions of Dominion and Not So Imaginary even though I do own both as ebooks. Anyway, my point is that there is an HTML version of Kirtlan's translation for you to simply read online, and I'll most likely stick to that one for future Beowulf prose telling re-reads.

Wednesday, as I stated, was spent re-reading Beowulf for formatting research, and I tried to plot out Cutter's Life As Known By Kriv. I didn't get much farther than that at work.

Thursday I again attempted to get Kriv's Ode to Cutter done in time for game, but things did not go to plan. Instead, I read through more of Beowulf. Even with the modern translation, the poetry formatting throws me off, so it's a bit harder for me to absorb and retain. I more-or-less knew the story from reading it in high school, watching the movie when it came out in 2007, and refreshing my memory via Red's recap over on Overly Sarcastic Productions. Still, trying to get the FEEL of what makes a story easily told and retold orally was tricky.

As I studied Beowulf, and pondered how to make my own story easily orated, I also thought back to my one friend's mom, and how she used to tell the story of Rindercella. Now, Rindercella is a spoonerism retelling of Cinderella that is most commonly remembered as a skit by Archie Campbell on the Hee Haw television show in the 1970s. It could have earlier origins, and Campbell himself could have either heard it from someone else or simply recited it from a script. Either way, it was so fun to listen to and repeat - plus the skit itself says to learn the story and retell it - that many people started recreating the skit, much like the Who's on First skit by Abbott and Costello. Anyway, the skit eventually became a campfire staple with the Boy Scouts, I guess. That's where my friend's mom heard it - she was a den mother - and she memorized it, and brought it to our Girl Scout campfires. It became a tradition there too, and my friend ended up memorizing it to tell her campers when she was a counselor, as well as telling it to the younger Girl Scouts when she became an assistant troop leader.

In truth, it wasn't until college or so did I realize my friend's mom didn't actually come up with Rindercella herself, and that, my friends, is how oral stories work. They are fun to listen to, fun to tell, and fairly easy to remember, both from an audience standpoint as well as a presenter's. It's also a bit tricky to try to find the originator of the tale; we can only really trace it back to Campbell thanks to it being recorded on TV and archived.

Kriv, of course, would want his name to travel with his story of Cutter, so I'll have to work his name into his Ode somehow, but in the end, yeah, I have to make it as fun as Rindercella, or as memorable and intriguing as Beowulf. It should probably be a bit trickier to remember, like Beowulf, in order to make Kriv's retelling of it special, since only those who have studied the epic can properly remember it, whereas those who hear it will only remember highlights.

Kind of like those Super Fans who can recite the entirety of a movie vs the casual viewers/fans who could tell you the characters, basic plot, some key one-liners, but little else.

So, yeah, all of that style research kind of took over, and I didn't really get anywhere with my actual writing.

Buuuut, that's probably a good thing now that there's a major monkey wrench in what Kriv's story SHOULD have been. As I mentioned last week, Cutter and Faelyth were left behind when the rest of the party were teleported out of the hidden basement lair. Then Cutter died when he was crushed under the collapsed stone ceiling, and further smooshed under the stone block used as a trap door for the lair. Kriv, of course, was not around to witness any of this, and Faelyth ran away before telling anyone. So my glorious idiot of a dragonborn has to somehow figure out what happened himself. Either that, or Solf or Hakkim need to figure it out and relay that info to Kriv.

The party did indeed return to the last place they saw Faelyth and Cutter - with Faelyth's older sister Kiatha in tow - and tried to search for their lost companions. However, the guards hadn't had the personnel available to excavate the caved in stairs yet, and the party were all too weak (read: failed our rolls) to move the heavy stones. So Cutter's body is still under a stone block, and the debris was too dense for anyone to see any potentially still-whole limbs sticking out for identification. The only clue was the trail of blood Faelyth left behind when she fled.

It was deduced that at least ONE of the lost duo had gotten out, while covered in blood. It was unknown if it is their own blood or someone/something else's. Kriv did note that only ONE set of tracks was found, so perhaps the other partymate was still in the rubble. The rest of the party quickly dismissed these concerns, stating that the one set of tracks doesn't mean anything; perhaps the other just didn't have any blood dripping off them, or perhaps Cutter was carrying Faelyth.

Now, please know that I TRIED to have Kriv figure it out. I did. The rest of the party dismissed any "ah-ha" moments Kriv might have had. Instead, Kriv did what he does best: wove a grand tale. I personally blame all of my years watching Castle for this: tell a great story despite the lack of facts, and just tweak it once new evidence comes to light.

Cutter was surprisingly empathetic, especially towards meek Faelyth. The more Kriv unknowingly made Faelyth uncomfortable, or the more Faelyth proved herself a competent companion, the more Cutter stuck by her and was protective of her. Kriv, of course, misread this as Cutter having romantic affections for Faelyth. It probably didn't help that Cutter had a ruddy complexion, and so he always looked either sunburnt or - as Kriv probably thought - always blushing. Add in that Faelyth seemed the most comfortable around Cutter, ya know, because he wasn't putting her in peril or trying to push her into the limelight like Kriv. To the hyperactive imagination of my bard, Faelyth's seemingly uncharacteristic calm with Cutter proved she returned his romantic feelings. The fact that Cutter wouldn't play along with Kriv's playful flirtations only solidified that the gladiator's heart was only for one person.

Cutter had also grumbled about being forced into a marriage contract in order to keep his main patron happy. That's when Kriv first thought of Cutter and Faelyth as "star-crossed lovers."

Now that the duo could not be find after "conveniently" being left behind, Kriv is convinced the two eloped. The way he sees the events is as follows:
During their brief time on the beach, wandering the dense jungle, and the many trials of the ziggurat, Cutter's and Faelyth's unconventional love sparked. It blossomed on the ride back into the city, but the duo knew they had to keep their newfound affections secret. For at his home, in the very city they were returning to, Cutter had a very wealthy and demanding patron. This Elf of high-standing was so fond of the gladiator that he wished Cutter join his family by way of marrying the Elf's daughter. Should the patron catch wind that Cutter preferred another, let alone a Drow - a hated "inferior" by Elven standards - all funding would cease, and Cutter might even become an enemy of the elite. Due to his loyalty to his owner/boss/father-figure, the dwarf Frinan who owned and ran the gladiatorial arena, Cutter would never do anything that might affect profits for the fighters' pit. Beyond that, neither Cutter nor Faelyth wished to have an Elf's vengeance sent upon her.
It was painful for the two lovers to keep their feelings secret and chaste, but they persevered. Then, as if Fate itself wished them to be together, they were left wholly alone in the basement lair. No one would know what happened to them. They could run away. They could be together!
"No," said Cutter, "For I am betrothed, and still shackled to be a gladiator. We shall be hunted down should we flee." So instead, he devised a great plan. He was a man of strength and endurance. He had neared Death before, and snarled at it each time. He was too stubborn to allow Death to take him before he was ready. He also knew from experience what parts of the body bled the most, and how long one could survive such wounds. Studying the stairs they had descended before, he began hacking away at the stone in order to cause a terrible cave in, leaving just enough space for the duo to sneak through. He then cut himself in order to pool his blood among the debris, and had the unsoiled Faelyth move the last bits of debris into place to hide the hole they escaped through. It would look as if there was a terrible accident trapping them inside, and they would be thought dead. Perhaps the lovers even concocted a plan to hide the fact that their bodies were no longer inside.
Forgetting his wounds, Cutter walked away from his past life, his future one draped along his side. Likewise, Faelyth no longer needed to fear or flee, for her bravery and home had her tightly wrapped within his arms. Pausing only long enough for Faelyth to finally tend to Cutter's bleeding, the couple fled the city, to start anew elsewhere, leaving their old identities behind.
Kriv is too much of a hopeless romantic to be deterred from this headcanon of his ship finally sailing. Even when Faelyth's older sister Kiatha mentioned that Faelyth "doesn't like men" Kriv simply responded:
"That just makes them an even more unlikely couple! To think that Cutter is the one man to manage to work his way into Faelyth's heart!"

Like I said before, I can't keep my characters from The Stupid.... Kriv will bend facts to meet his headcanon, reality be damned, apparently.

So... uh.... I guess, instead of an In Memorium, Kriv is now writing a sort of Romeo & Juliet about Cutter and Faelyth, but with a happy ending???

Regardless, I still needed to lock down what highlights of Cutter's life would be included, so Friday was back to plotting that out. I had all of the backstory that Kriv should know about Cutter already ironed out. Now was time to work through the highlights of the campaign. I had a bit of practice during session as the new characters asked about Faelyth and "what happened to her?"

Of course, Solf instantly knew that was entirely the wrong question to state within earshot of Kriv. Instead of a simple "we were investigating this thing at this underground lair, and we got separated; we're not sure what happened next" the whole group was regaled - sorta - by Kriv's tell of EVERYTHING that happened since first meeting Faelyth and Cutter.

In truth, I was going to just start the tale in such a grand manner that it was obvious what Kriv was doing, and then I was going to "fade to black" as it were, and then "cut" to the last bit where the party was separated. However, Quarthix wasn't there for the first four sessions, and I had handwaved over a lot of that first arc when Kriv originally told the tale in the tavern upon meeting Solf. When Quarthix expressed interest in actually hearing the tale, I leaned hard into it. By the time I got to the part where the party met Solf, and therefore all players knew exactly what happened, everyone seemed so into my overly dramatic retelling that I just sort of... continued to run with it? The whole thing probably took a good ten or twenty minutes. To be fair, though, that's still a fairly decent recap for... what... seven sessions averaging roughly 4hrs each?

Anyway, I had realized upon my impromptu retelling that I didn't quite remember the ziggurat dungeon dive all that well. I still haven't taken a moment to look back on the map that Hubby drew - which will likely refresh my memory - nor have I talked through the events with Hubby, Omni, and/or Wolf to try to better recall the highlights in proper order. I wish Hubby had notes, but since the dungeon was supposed to be a one-off, he just used a random generator, and I don't think he has that info anymore. I'll have to check....

Regardless, I haven't touched my campaign recap since Friday. I already told you what I had done the past three days which took priority.

Now I'm on the fence between "Well, Kriv doesn't think they're dead, so no need to rush through this story; focus on the Miraculous Ladybug Valentine's stories" and "Now that Kriv thinks there's an epic love story to tell, I should probably come up with something for next game; plus it gives me something new that was written this month since I haven't shared anything since Christmas."

We'll see which side prevails next week.

In the meantime, Hubby and I haven't had much time TOGETHER and ALONE in a while, so we're off to a double-header movie date.

OH! Two more things, though, before I go. This first one I meant to share a while ago.

Long-time readers of this blog might remember how, in 2018, I talked about a story called Mr. Lucky and the Cat by fanfiction writer HariWrites. I really enjoyed the non-magical/con-man/thief AU that she had created. Instead of superheroes, Marinette was a cat-themed burglar a la Catwoman, and Adrien was a con-artist who used his wealth and model status to weasel his way into expensive homes and closed events showcasing unique riches. In both cases, our nontraditional heroes were more-or-less Robin-Hooding; stealing previously stolen items from "evil" elites. There was also a parallel plot where Tikki was the lead detective for the string of robberies, and Plagg was the main investigator for the company that had insured nearly everything that had been stolen. There was a lot of mystery and suspense as you tried to figure out who to trust out of a cast of characters you know to be good in the show's continuity. Also, of course there was a sort of forbidden romance between Marinette and Adrien, and who wouldn't fall for that?

Well, seeing how popular her story was, and realizing that there was really very little connecting her story to actual ML canon - just the character names, vague relationships between them, and Easter Eggs nodding to the show via the things being stolen - Hari decided to try her hand at reworking the story into an original work.

And on January 6th that original rework of the story was published!

I haven't had a chance to read my copy yet, but if it's close to the fanfic I already read, then I highly recommend. Best part is that it comes with both an e-book AND paperback option. Yay, physical books!

Thief by Night

By day, Bonnie Duncan is a social media manager, by night, she steals from high society. A consummate multi-tasker, she balances her double-life with ease; bossing it in the boardroom and behind the mask. Until, mid-diamond-heist, she discovers another thief taking the same gem she was ordered to lift and has to take decisive measures. To complicate matters, she soon discovers that she knows the other thief and, worse, he’s handsome and charming. Can she keep her secrets while she uncovers his? Can she resist his charms and stay focused on the job?
You can either request your library get a copy of this story, or you can pick up your own via Amazon.

As for the other thing, well, you know that NaNoWriMo project that Cyhyr asked me to beta read? Well, her edits on that first chapter are done, and she posted it to AO3 late last night/early this morning.

I am not even much of a Final Fantasy fan, and I've never played nor really saw any game footage of FFXV. All I know of these characters I either learned from Cyhyr talking about them, from the posts Cy reblogs on her Tumblr, or from the short-format fanfics Cy has written within this fandom. In other words, I'm going in fairly blind. Which means you can probably trust me when I say you don't need any prior knowledge to enjoy this story. You just feel the intensity of the situation as you follow Vesper. You feel how much she cares for Aster, you become confused and disoriented beside her, you become as frustrated as she does, and you also want to see Aster again. The visceral storytelling and mystery were enough to draw me in, for sure.

So, there you have it: one free read, and a fairly cheap-to-buy one. Hopefully they can tide you over until I can get my own act together.

Maybe I SHOULD force myself to keep writing....

Might be something to reconsider and re-calibrate in time for this Saturday's Lunar New Year.
