December Catch-Up

Generated by Bitmoji

Ooof. I've missed nearly all of December! Man, this year has been a complete dumpster fire, hasn't it?

Speaking of, that's what I got my husband as one of his many birthday gifts.

(Special shout out to ChibiSunnie for showing me that this was a thing)

To be frank, not much has really gone on, productivity wise, this month, and so I just didn't really have the drive to update my blog. I'm so tired of writing "I didn't do any writing or anything creative, nor have I read anything new. So how's your pandemic going?" every week. That first week of December I concentrated on Hubby's birthday for my days off. I didn't initially plan on skipping that week's update, and was actually kinda mad with myself for doing so, but it was what it was, and I had to let it go. The following week, I only had the 11th off, and I was spending so much time playing catchup on chores and errands and gift buying that I didn't even think about my blog post until days later. Again, I was mad at myself, but I had to shrug off the shame and guilt of not updating.

Then last week, I just didn't bother. Complete white flag. I had switched days off with a coworker, so I had Sunday instead of Friday off, I had my normal Tuesday off finally, AND the store was closed on Thursday due to snow. Still, I spent Tuesday nuzzling against my husband and doing more Christmas shopping. I was still irritated, but I didn't even ATTEMPT to write anything for my blog. What was there to write anyway? Nothing really to catch up on within my personal life - as evidenced by these short paragraphs summing up practically my whole month - and I hadn't done any writing or reading, so....

With that Thursday snow day though, I FINALLY had some free unscheduled downtime! Hubby and I caught up on Christmas movie watching, and last-minute online Christmas shopping. I still didn't think of my blog, though. Instead, I focused on my LOOOOOOOONG backlog of fanfics to read. I was a bit overwhelmed as to where to start since my list went as far back as August! To simplify things, and get me out of my overwhelmed freeze, I just started at the top: the most recently updated story. Which also happened to be a story I read before.... whoops.

Generated by Bitmoji

Oh well, it's a Christmas themed story, and I need extra doses of Holiday Cheer this year anyway. Plus, it's a story that's partially gifted to me, so how could I resist?

On December 14th, I got a notification that Taurus Pixie started uploading her lovely story Twelve Days of Chatmas to AO3! Those that have been following this blog for a while may remember that she had partially dedicated this story to me back in 2018 when she first published it to FFN. It's a 12-chapter story that she updated daily leading into Christmas. Well, now that she has it polished a touch and is ready to upload it to AO3, she's doing the same thing: updating it a chapter a day leading into Christmas.

It's angsty but funny and gives you warm holiday fuzzies and HOLY SMOKES, I DIDN'T REALIZE HOW MUCH FOWL IS INCLUDED IN THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS!

Twelve Days of Chatmas

Summary: Christmas is fast approaching, and Chat Noir is determined to get Ladybug the perfect gift. The problem is, they all keep going disastrously wrong. Will Chat Noir be able to find Ladybug the perfect gift in time?

It's been such a delight to relive the excitement of getting those daily notifications telling me the story updated.

Also, bonus, I haven't started any writing yet, but I HAVE been brainstorming a project that was inspired by my re-read of Twelve Days of Chatmas, so if I actually find the time to crank it out, you can give Pixie a huge "thank you" for sharing her Muse.

Either way, you guys should go check out Twelve Days of Chatmas because it's fantastic and deserves more love. Plus, Christmas story!

Speaking of which, I'm happy to see more and more people are drifting back to my own Christmas ML fanfic. If you haven't checked out the story I gave to Pixie in 2018 as a thank you for TDoC, please give it a read!

Woven Heartstrings
Summary: Chat Noir needs a Christmas gift for Ladybug. Marinette is a very crafty and creative person, so Chat Noir asks her for some help in making a gift for his lady. While hesitant in aiding Chat Noir's attempts to woo her superhero self, Marinette reluctantly agrees. Although, after a week of working side-by-side with Marinette, Chat Noir's not so sure he wants to gift the scarf he's making to Ladybug after all.

The rest of the limited free time I had this week, instead of working on that new story brewing in my brain (like I need more plotbunnies...), I spent reading ANOTHER story that was partially gifted to me!

This poor story was sitting on my To Read list for nearly a month! After tearing through it Monday, I felt so guilty about waiting so long to get to it in the first place, but I'm also kind of glad I did wait, because it meant I could read it all in (almost) a single sitting instead of waiting for the next chapter to update.

This story was SUCH a rollercoaster of emotions. It is angsty and makes me want to cry. It's so soft and fluffy and fills you with warm fuzzies. It gut-punches you with angst again. It's a bit silly. It's comforting in the best way. It's just.... Mmmmm. A delight!

Pieces by mostlovedgirl

Summary: Adrien’s world is shattered. He runs to the one place he can find comfort. It isn’t with the person he imagined, but she’s the only one he needs.

Word Count: 8292
Status: Complete; 3 chapters
Rating: Teen and up
Anyone who still believes *I* should be considered the "Queen of Angst" really needs to read this woman's work. At BEST, I'm probably a Countess of Angst....

As I went to bed Monday night, I was again inspired. I thought about a continuation of the story, involving Nino and Alya. I don't want to spoil anything about Pieces, but let's just say that Adrien has a LOT to talk about with Nino and Alya come the Monday at school after the story ends. There's also a LOT he has to navigate at school itself, and I was starting to explore that as I drifted off to sleep.

Sadly, as is usually true when one thinks of plotlines while drifting off to sleep, I've kind of lost where I was going with it. I know more-or-less the issues still left post-Pieces that Adrien has to deal with, and how I wanted Alya and Nino to be involved. I also vaguely recall wanting Alya and Nino getting their Miraculouses back permanently, but I can't recall how I was going to go about it. Finally, while most fanfic writers tend to have Adrien using his Trust to finance an apartment the moment he turns 18 so he can get out of the Agreste mansion, part of me prefers the idea of the Lahiffe family taking him in until he's ready to be on his own. Also, with everything that happened in Pieces, I'm not sure if I wanted him to leave or stay in the mansion. A LOT of ball-juggling in my head, but the fact that there was a SPARK there means so much.

So another big thank you to MLG for sharing a bit of HER Muse as well. I guess while my own Muse is broken, I'm on some sort of Rent-A-Muse program for my writing. So, again, thank you to these other fantastic content creators for lending theirs out.

Alright, so let's see what my To Read list looks like now....
  • I've been waiting patiently for the latest chapter update of TaurusPixie's rework of her demon-summoning Miraculous Ladybug AU story Immortal Bonds; completely forgetting I never went back to read the chapter 3 update from back in August! So that's top of my list, for sure!
  • Another biggie for me, especially since I usually hop instantly to the story when I see it updates, is Chapter 17 of Discordant Sonata by EdenDaphne. Frankly, I'm surprised I've waited over a month to read this!
  • Yet ANOTHER story I was excited to see an update notification for despite me neglecting to actually read the update this past week is Dressed to Confess by zenmisery
  • There's also the 7 one-shots Cyhyr wrote for SylvixWeek2020 way back in September!
  • Bouncing back to TaurusPixie, apparently I've neglected to read both her chapter 4 AND 5 updates for her Helsing story Go and Conquer.
  • Next up is probably Wait for Me by mostlovedgirl, which I've been sitting on since the beginning of November.
  • I also have three different W.I.T.C.H. stories by TaurusPixie to read: Dreams of Demons, Waters Run Deep, and Healing Hearts. These stories have been piling up since the beginning of November. However, I don't really know anything about W.I.T.C.H., so I might have to push them to the back of the pack until I whittle this list down a touch.
  • The 45 other fanfics I already had on my To Read list before the summer even ended!
  • The last 2 novels of Rick Riordan's Trials of Apollo series

I'm assuming you can guess why I felt overwhelmed when I FINALLY had some reading time again and I wasn't sure where to start. It's equally overwhelming to try to decide what to even do with that free time! Catch up on the reading or attempt to write? Trying to answer that question has been a bit crippling for me this year, but I'm hoping 2021 will be kinder to all of us.

In the meantime, I hope everyone either got to enjoy their holidays or will be enjoying theirs; sorry to all of my non-Christian readers for missing wishing you a happy holiday.

Holiday Crunch Time

Generated by Bitmoji
A very merry Festival of Lights to all of my Jewish readers. I hope this time brings warmth, joy, and love while among family - both related and found.

Sadly, Bitmoji doesn't have icons for any winter holidays beyond Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. The best options I have are...
All 3 generated by Bitmoji
So, instead, we'll go with the ones I found a couple of years ago, even though I don't have any artist credits....

I hope any and all who celebrated Solstice and/or Yule this year enjoyed their celebrations, and found warmth, comfort, and joy with their loved ones.

I still can't find a legit Happy/Merry/Blessed Saturnalia image on Google. They are all images of Ancient Roman statues or  snarky comments about Christmas really being Saturnalia. So... if you practice Saturnalia, I'm sorry for not having a personalized image for you, but I still sincerely hope yours went well. May you have rejoiced with beloved friends and family, and feel renewed for the upcoming year.

If there are any other holidays I've missed, please let me know in the comments section so that I can properly remember next year.

And for those who don't practice any religion, I hope you still had - or have - the opportunity to rejoice throughout the season, and have the time to reflect upon your friends, loved ones, your own self-care, and the blessings you've received this passing year. May the holidays go smoothly for you, and may your days be filled with warmth and happiness.

So, once again.

So, to all of my readers, however the year, December, and this holiday season have treated you, I hope you enjoyed your celebrations, or will enjoy them, if they haven't happened yet, and that the last week of the year is kind to you.

Speaking of holidays, 'tis Christmas Eve, and guess who is, like, a week behind on everything....

Hubby put up the Christmas tree, so there's that, and he just sorted the lights on it. It still needs to be trimmed though, so part of today will consist of me playing one of my favorite Christmas movies - The Nutcracker Prince - in the background as I FINALLY get around to fluffing and decorating the tree... just in time to take it down again in like two weeks...

...

It's going to be up until April again this year, isn't it?

Also, fear not, my absolute-favorite Christmas movie was already watched last week: The Muppet Christmas Carol.

I could also throw in Ernest Saves Christmas, A Christmas Story, It's a Wonderful Life, The Christmas Toy, A Muppet Family Christmas, and Santa Claus is Comin' to Town for my list of "must watch" Christmas movies since they're also staples, but they aren't as "essential." It just doesn't FEEL like Christmas for me without The Nutcracker Prince and The Muppet Christmas Carol. Now, of course there's other classics, but those are more "nice to watch if we have time" than "crucial to me feeling The Season." Ya know? Everyone has their own list, I'm sure.

Also, I never really worry about watching A Christmas Story any sooner than today anyway, since the channel TBS has a 24-hr airing of the movie from Christmas Eve into Christmas Day. One day the station will end this tradition, and I'll be left hanging without a copy to watch.... I do not believe today is that day though. So that's Future Me's problem.

Hubby and I still need to wrap gifts, but at least I got his done this morning. Which is why this blog post is late THIS week; I needed to make sure his gifts were wrapped while he was at work and out of the apartment.

Of course, I'm still ages behind on my cleaning, kind of moving things out to the edges of each room - as it were - so we could do things like put up the tree and wrap gifts in the meantime. So I'll probably want to dedicate some time to THAT.

And guess what else I need to focus on today?

If you said "That ML Secret Santa story?" you are correct! Here, have a star.

Yup. This week zipped by without me touching it at all. Like the dedicated writer that I am....

Last Tuesday I raced around while trying to finish that stupid-late blog entry; trying to beat the snow before it got too bad outside. It ended up being bad enough that we had to cancel our Writing Group meeting. I figured "sure, this is a good time to work on the story" but I got so caught up in the chores I needed to finish, and Hubby wanted to watch something - I think that's when we watched The Muppet Christmas Carol - so... no writing.

Wednesday was work, followed by cleaning and frantic Christmas shopping still. Then Hubby got his birthday gift to himself in the mail: 13 Dead End Drive. It's a Milton Bradley game from the early 90s that he always wanted to play, but never got the chance as a child. Same for me. So when Hubby saw it got a re-print/re-release, he knew he had to get it. Since we were both "denied" the opportunity to play the game as children, I took a time-out from my busy evening to help Hubby assemble the board game - and spend about 20 minutes trying to find a crucial rubber band about the size of those used on braces - and then play a couple of rounds with him.

We ended up missing the first half of The Masked Singer finale because we were playing. Whoops. We then tuned in for the second half, and by the time the show was done it was 10pm. I then spent the rest of my evening going through the other gifts submitted to the ML Secret Santa Tumblr, with hopes that it would inspire me to find a proper frame for my story; or a new idea for a story I'd feel more excited about.

No dice, but I am now up to about a half-dozen plot bunnies to use for later projects.

Also, of COURSE I thought of a cute winter-themed story idea YESTERDAY. I doubt I have time to write it out before tomorrow, and I WANT to get this story to my giftee by Christmas itself. Buuuuuut, I'm not opposed to maybe putting up this winter-themed story after Christmas, since it would still be during winter.

As I mentioned last week, Wolfhearted wasn't available to D&D this week, which turned out to be a bit of a blessing. Normally Tuesdays are Laundry Day, but with the weather so bad, we had to push it back. Wednesday wasn't much better with the snow and icy/slushy roads, so it got pushed back again. Thursday still had more snow, but the roads weren't as bad as the previous two days. Which in and of itself was a blessing, because Hubby and I were running out of clothes.

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate having to use a laundromat instead of being able to just do laundry whenever I wanted at home????

While I was out anyway, I did more last-minute Christmas shopping, and picked up dinner. By the time the clothes were dry and folded, it was closing in on 10pm again, and I was getting a bit exhausted. I didn't have the mental strength to try to create something, so I zoned out on Tumblr again; catching up on the ML Secret Santa uploads.

Friday I was DETERMINED to get the tree up, clean, and squirrel away to write.

I had forgotten that Hubby and I already had plans to visit The Nerds: Rozsavaria and her husband Sarpadian. I had work as well, so between that, dinner, our evening visit to watch Pokemon: Detective Pikachuand then the three of them - Roz, Sar, and Hubby - playing Pokemon Sword and Shield, I didn't get home until 11pm. Certainly no time to write.

It was a good visit, though. Hubby and Sar rarely have schedules that match up to the point where they can hang out, so that was nice. Also, the movie was somehow about par with what I was expecting, better than I was expecting, and still in need of more polishing than I expected. It really just depended on what scene you were watching at any given time.

There were some quality inconsistencies is what I'm saying.

Saturday I had work, again, but Hubby finally had off. As I mentioned above, he cleaned up a lot of the dining room so he could put up the Christmas tree. Now, just to explain real quick, my "dining room" is actually just a random extra common room separated from the living room. We have a dining table in it, and so it is the "dining room" when really it's more of a multi-purpose room. Hence the tree being in it.
This was after Mom helped me and Hubby organize our place a couple of years ago.
I assure you it looks nowhere as clean now,
and that fact makes me cry, so let's ignore that....
Our Christmas tree is tucked behind the snack tables, on the other side of that wall the sofa table of games is butted up against.

Anyway, Saturday was still our standard Anime Day with Omnibladestrike and Hubby's one best man, whose online persona I actually don't know... so we're going to call him Goob. I don't recall if I ever gifted him a nickname here before, but Goob is a nickname we gave him IRL, so it works.

Hubby, Omni, and Goob were playing Pokemon Sword and Shield on their respective Switches when I got home, so I utilized that time to get more cleaning done. Part of me hoped they'd just Pokemon all night so I could squirrel away to write, but the boys really wanted to get to the anime. I didn't want to miss out on the advancing stories of the various animes we get in, so I stopped for dinner and anime... and kept going until Hubby passed out on the couch at about 11pm.

So... yeah... no writing again....

Sunday! Sunday I got out of work at 4pm! Clearly I had more than enough time to write then, right?

Especially since Hubby worked until 10pm, so I was alone in the house. That is six hours of cleaning and writing time. Riiiiight?

(ignore that this is me and not
my LycoRogue persona...)
Then I did a large load of dishes, and cooked myself dinner. The night went kind of downhill from there. Dinner making did not go well; I'll spare you the details, it was a bunch of stupid stuff that piled up. Paying bills reminded me how little spare cash I had left for Christmas gifts I STILL had to get to finish our list off. Thinking about Christmas gifts reminded me that I haven't had time to finish up Hubby's Part II for his gift; the main reason I got him what I did. I also never had the time to make little stuffed animals for my niece and nephew like I wanted. I had forgotten to mail out Christmas gifts, so now everyone getting one mailed is going to have to wait until January for them.... sorry about that, guys.

Since I was already in a downward spiral, the stress and time-crunch I was facing just imploded on me. The emotional, heart-string-pulling commercials that play around the holidays - such as the granddaughters making a memorial video for their grandfather, and the family having a flash mob create a yellow ribbon for military members coming home for Christmas - didn't help matters. There were also emotional stories about the football players that aired during half-time and in-between games. I don't remember any specific ones right now, but I'm fairly sure at least one was about a player talking about his mom and her sacrifices to help him achieve his goals. There's always at least one of those. I think there was also one about a player who - due to medical reasons - had to give up playing shortly into his NFL career, but is now a coach and how fulfilling that is.

At 8pm there was a re-airing of the finale of The Masked Singer, and since I missed that first hour on Wednesday, I watched that instead of cleaning or writing. Also a bad decision on a night where I was already in a poor mental-health spot. Watching the celebrities talk about how important the anonymity of The Mask Singer was for their self-confidence reminded me of my own Writing Funk(s), and that got me sobbing again.

Since I was mostly paying attention to the show, I figured that was the perfect time to try to mindlessly catch up on Tumblr... where I found even MORE emotional posts of one nature or another, and posts talking about giving creators love and appreciation, and posts talking about struggling with self-confidence in writing but how the littlest things really help, and fanart of fanfics because they are just "too amazing" and it inspired the artist who wanted to help promote it - usually these posts are followed up with people adding in how everyone should read said fanfic. I wondered if I would ever become that renown in the fandom; could that ever be me?

It... it wasn't a good night for me, is what I'm trying to say. I saw once that crying is like taking the lid off a boiling over pot: it won't solve anything - the pot will still be boiling over - but it will remove the added pressure so there's time to correct the problem before it gets worse.

So, on Sunday, I took off the lid, I guess.

I still need about a week to really be ready for a holiday that is essentially "here" already, and the "heat" is probably up too high, as it were, but at least I'm not boiling over anymore. Hopefully, within the next few days, I'll have time to get myself to a "proper temp."

Needless to say, no writing on Sunday.

Yesterday was my last day of work before these two days off, and then back to working straight through until my mom and sister visit. So that heat is actually probably going to go right back up again. Hubby's trying to be a better chef, and keep a more watchful eye of that burner for me.

Hey, Kettle, is this enough stove top analogies for a day?

Anyway, yesterday was work, followed by one MORE day of "last minute" shopping, and Hubby trying to both help unwind me as well as get me more into the Christmas Spirit by watching The Knight Before Christmas on Netflix.

It. Was. Cheesy. But... not in a bad way? Hubby and I joked "It's a Hallmark Channel Christmas movie, but with DIVERSITY!" There's even three different inter-racial couples spanning 4 races: Latina/Asian, Latina/White, and White/Black. So... cool.

The Knight Before Christmas was probably on par with Detective Pikachu: better than I was expecting, while simultaneously being about as cheesy as I was expecting, and having real head-slap moments that really should have been written/directed/acted/edited better.

After our wind-down and Christmas movie - and a bunch of Christmas goodies Hubby got from work - it was nearing 11pm again. I ended up staying awake until 1am chatting with friends online, checking in on the ML Secret Santa blog, and trying to clean a touch. But the mental wherewithal was not there for writing.

Yesterday was of course the day I thought of the winter-themed fanfic idea, and figured if I could finish my existing story - so I had something to gift, at least - then I could use today and tomorrow to try to get this new idea done.

Yup. That.... fell through hard.
Generated by Bitmoji
Now, normally this would be the time where I'd say "Fear not, for I had downtime at work that I used for writing!" but alas, I can't even say that. Most of the week was spent wrangling the endless price tags at work. We had to update all of the clearance items in the store, and... due to reasons I won't get into... it takes longer than it should up front so that life is easier for us on the back end. So that was pretty much three solid work days. Our Christmas sale ended yesterday as well, so that was two more days spent scanning the store, printing and folding tags, and putting them up, all while still helping customers and taking an hour-long lunch break for a mini office Christmas party yesterday. What little time outside of tag-updating I had was spent pushing through to finish Part II of Hubby's gift. It's not quite up to par with my standards - which, admittedly is more "perfectionist" level for my own crafting - but Hubby's more laid back, and tends to love anything I make him. He's good people like that. So I hope he's going to love what I did, and I can polish the rough edges later; when life isn't as chaotic.

So... yup.... no free time at work either, and the limited amount I did have earlier in the month were "wasted" on reading as much fanfic as possible... and slowly dipping into despair at how fantastic and lovely those stories are compared to what I wrote.

I'm so. So. So. Sorry, Secret Santa giftee. I swear I'm trying to put in the effort!

Clearly this all means I do NOT have a link to my story for you guys to all read. Next week, though. I do have until the 31st to complete my story. I want it up for my recipient before Christmas concludes; preferably some time today so they can "find it Christmas morning" as it were. But I DO have another week, should the need arise.

I'm hoping for a much more stable week and less "whiny" post next week. I'm also hoping the joy of Christmas finally strikes me when I'm with Hubby's side of the family tomorrow.

Finishing Off 2017 Right (Sorta)

Sorry for the delay, Christmas being on a Monday threw me off a bit. I forgot that I was working on a Tuesday, and I was so into the whole "spending time with family on Christmas" thing that it didn't even occur to me to pre-write something.

Still, I am determined to have this be the first year that I have 52 posts - one for every week! This will be my 52nd post of the year; this will be my year when I FINALLY manage to get that "once a week, every week" schedule down! My writing IS important, and being dedicated to this blog at the very least is my way of telling the world that.

Such a big step for me. Such a small but important victory. Especially since, unlike previous years, each of the 52 posts has been for the week it is intended for, instead of having to do "catch-up" weeks where I post twice a week to get my final count up. In fact, this is only the third post this WHOLE YEAR that I didn't publish on Tuesday. Back in March I was two days late, posting on the 9th instead of the 7th. Then I missed posting on Independence Day and updated on July 5th instead. Now today instead of yesterday. This is a BIG DEAL for me. Are you excited too?

Okay, so what if this is a big deal that I'm keeping up with this blog and making my few hours to write an update each week a priority? I mean, it's cool beans and all, but what does that do for you, the reader? Not really much of anything, sadly. However, now that I'm getting into a proper rhythm, and I typically recall to at least pre-write a post if I can't do so Tuesday morning, that means I can start getting a bit more serious about the CONTENT.

More importantly, I can work more on my overall writing routine so that I have something of more value for you to read each week. I failed with this year's goal to have something new each week, and I most likely won't be able to get that steady for 2018 either. Especially now that I'm taking the time to slow down and really focus on bigger projects like "Peeping Tomcat." However, I could still try to aim on having something new to post at least once a month. That could be fun and exciting.

Maybe one day I'll even be able to transition this into a more professional looking blog with updates more along the lines of what professional authors write. Even if it's a couple paragraphs long to give you an update on my narrative writing, and then get back to it, instead of dedicating three hours or so writing a blog update.

We'll see what the future holds.

As for this week? Well, the last two weeks of the year are always about as shot as the last week of November. Darn holidays. Actually, pretty much all of December is shot. Between Hubby's birthday, recovering from Thanksgiving and/or NaNo, prepping for Christmas with things such as decorating and getting gifts ready, trying to keep the house clean and inevitably failing, and prepping for my mom and sister to visit.... well, December gets a bit hectic with very little extra time to write or read. I barely have the time to watch the multitude of holiday movies I generally attempt to cram into December. I also tend to get a nasty head cold right around Christmas, and, right on schedule, I'm battling through a doozy of a head cold right now. FUN!

Long and short? I added to my reading this past week, but didn't touch my writing.
Challenge by Reading Books Like a Boss
Hubby chose "Ender's Shadow" for me to read for my "set in the future" book. Sadly, I'm not even half-way through it, so I doubt I'll finish before the end of the year, let alone re-reading a book. I also didn't check off "Ready. Set. Novel!" or "Atlas Shrugged"; two books that I'll try again next year.

I don't think I'm going to attempt an official challenge for 2018, though. I've gotten back into the want to read, which was the whole point of challenges in the first place. However, all they seem to do is make me freak out that I'm not reading the "correct" books or not reading fast enough. I also spend most of the year either figuring out how to manipulate what I want to read so it fits into the challenge, or I avoid reading that particular book altogether. Not really what I was going for.

The challenges were fun and have broadened my horizons, but I think I'm moving on from them, at least for a year.

As of right now, my game plan for 2018 is to try one more time to read "Atlas Shrugged" and get that back to my father-in-law. I also want to re-read "Lycopolis" before reading Ali Luke's second novel "Oblivion." By the time I'm done with that I should be all set to buy and read Ali's latest book "Dominion," which just came out this month! As of right now it's only an e-book, but by the time I'm ready for my read she'll probably have the paperback option.

The more I read "Ender's Shadow," and the more the book eludes to "Ender's Game," the more I want to re-read "Ender's Game" in order to be fully reminded of the events being referenced in "Ender's Shadow." Plus, now that I have more backstory for Bean, perhaps the little jerk will be a more sympathetic character when I re-read EG. I can even finish it up by re-watching the movie adaptation of "Ender's Game" and/or re-reading the graphic novelizations of the book. Then lament how "off" it is compared to the source material. Basically, January may start off with me going back to EG before taking another crack at "Atlas Shrugged."

The end of March also brings about the movie adaptation of "Ready Player One" finally, so I'll probably get a re-read of that book as well. I just don't know if I want to re-read before the movie to remind me of everything, or if I want to purposely wait until AFTER watching the movie so I don't get disappointed by how different the adaptation is. Then again, the author of the novel wrote the script basically at the same time. He sold the script pretty much at the same time as the novel! I'd like to have faith that in THIS situation the movie will be pretty faithful to the book.

See? I have such a nice reading game plan already, and I don't know if I'd be able to read any of the above novels if I tried to fit them into a reading challenge. I'd also feel so overwhelmed and behind if I tried to get in the twelve books for the challenge - as seems to be the basic structure of these things - as well as the six books listed above, especially since I KNOW I'll have to take two months or so to make it through "Atlas Shrugged" properly. And those books don't even include informative books such as "Ready. Set. Novel!" or "Writer's Book of Days" or "No Plot? No Problem!"

Since I'm avoiding official reading challenges next month, I do encourage you fine folks to throw some suggestions my way. Got a book you thought was amazing? Let me know about it in the comments. Did you publish something yourself and want me to give it a read? Sure thing! Let me know below!

Well, I've rambled for long enough about reading, I think. Normally this is where I'd try to reflect on the year and do my "year in review" post, but I don't think I even have time for that!

So, for this year, I think I'll just leave it as a simple thank you to everyone who has followed me during this journey, and everyone who stuck by me this year. For any of those who bumped me up past 200 hits per post - I now have a slew that's over 900 hits! - especially if you decided to stick around, because I know you probably came here looking for Miraculous info and found bupkis. Especially for everyone who encouraged me when I was running on fumes at the beginning of the year, and when I was about to wave the white flag in November.

Wait, Christmas is HOW Close?

Goodness is it nice outside. Like, "I kinda want to go sit on the porch to write this post" nice. Well, it is a bit overcast and dreary, but temperature wise for December, it's nice. Actually, even though it's flurried almost daily for a week or so, which would normally TOTALLY put me in the Christmas mood, the actual temperature has been fairly mild. Probably why I still feel like I have a full month before Christmas, instead of just a handful of days.

Anyone ready for the holidays this year? Because I certainly am not.

The month kind of flew by for my writing as well. I went from writing daily to barely writing at all. It could still be NaNo Fatigue, or mild depression from my computer problems, or just generic Holiday Funk that's making me kind of apathetic this month.

Either way, the year is almost out, and I'm trying to prep myself to kick even more writing butt in 2018. I do think my writing productivity and focus increased this year, and I hope to increase both again next year. I may not have turned out quite as much this year as I did last, or even as much as I would have liked to have published. However, I think that's because I learned Quality over Quantity. I want to make sure my stories are more polished and complete. I was kind of happy with the September incarnation of "Peeping Tomcat" and could have posted as I wrote, as I used to do. But it grew, it expanded, it evolved, and it's evolving still. The story I want to tell in the mode I want to tell it isn't quite there yet, but it will be if I keep working it. Past Me wouldn't have given the story enough time. I think this decision shows my growth in a nutshell.

Speaking of evolving PT, I realized the reason why I'm stunted is because I'm writing a novella while thinking in show form. I could do what I did with "Hey, Arnold!" and just write my novel. I'll write everyone in-character and have the same basic feel and tone of the show; call it a day. Nearly every review I receive for my HA fanfictions say basically the same thing: "I feel like I just watched an unaired episode." For me, that's the highest praise for a fanfiction writer. If it feels like it could be canon - not that it's so good that the reader WANTS it to be canon, but the reader feels like the creator actually was involved - then I did my job perfectly.

I feel like I'm in that right spot for PT. I feel like I have the characters pretty spot-on, and I feel the over-arcing plot has the same tone as the show would. Still, for me it doesn't read like it's canon. It doesn't feel like it could be like an hour-long special or something. There are so many "Miraculous Ladybug" stories out there, especially since it's basically aired globally within weeks of each other. I have a LOT more competition for readers' attention. I want to make sure my story stands out somehow. Having it flow like the novelization of an unaired episode is how I want to put my stamp on the Miraculous fandom. I just can't get the rhythm down, and creating akumas is WAY harder than I gave it credit.

So, I'm trying a different tactic. This week I started sorta rewriting PT one more time. This time in Celtx. For those who don't recall or don't know, Celtx is mostly a script-writing program. One that I used back when Script Frenzy was still a thing.

I figured I could shift things around better in script form. I know that the general rule of thumb is that it takes a minute to act through a page of dialogue. It also takes nearly as long to read through the description of an action as it is to perform it, give or take. Which leads to the timing rule of roughly "one minute per page of script." This is basically how the industry figures out in the scripting process if they need to add on or cut in order to get the finished product within the desired run-time.

Anyway, using this rule, and knowing that the typical episode of Miraculous - minus the opening and end credits - is either twenty or twenty-one minutes long, I can try to get a better rhythm for my story.

True, I will never get my story to fit into the equivalent of a 20-min episode. In truth, it never should, given the in-depth problem I'm working on within it. However, as I mentioned, I could maybe get it to feel like it's an hour-long special or a multi-episode story arc. I have at least two akumas plotted to be in the story: one per "half hour" of the tale.

I know that my story should take longer than twenty-some pages per half in script form, but I know now what I'm aiming for. I want each half to feel like it's even pacing. I don't want to go overboard with the story either. If I only have two akumas but the script version of PT is over 100 pages long then I either need to cut or I should add in more akumas. This is an everyday - or nearly everyday - challenge that Ladybug and Chat Noir have to face, and I don't want that to be forgotten just because the focus is on the Will They; Won't They of their relationship. No offense to the beautiful and brilliant fanfics I've already read in this fandom that do skim over akumas - I believe it's because they really are SUPER hard to convincingly create - but, as I mentioned, I want my signature in this fandom to be how "true to form" I am. That means having the proper allotment of time dedicated to LB and CN fighting akumas.

I also realized, as to be expected with this story given how introspective the plot is, that there isn't that much actual action or dialogue. The majority of the story is "Marinette does a thing, Adrien secretly watches her do the thing, he reflects on how cute she is doing the thing and how she reminds him of Ladybug, and then Adrien freaks out about comparing Marinette to Ladybug."

That's it. That's the plot. Fun, right?

In script form I can physically see where the dialogue/action dips off. The beauty of film/TV/stage performances is that the audience typically can't get inside the head of the characters. They have to rely on communication clues. This character is huddled in the corner, arms crossed, foot resting against the wall, head turned to not look exactly at anyone, and grumbles anything he says. You don't really need me to dive into his head to let you know what he's thinking, right? Add in more info like the girl we saw him crushing on earlier chatting up another guy, and Corner Dude flinching every time he hears her giggling in her conversation. You've got a better picture, right?

Well, I need to remember that I don't need visual media for you to know what's going on inside a character's head simply from context clues. The more involved bits, like Adrien's confusion on his feelings for LB vs Mari, or even his realization of how similar Mari and LB are, can probably still be inner monologue, but his "OMG OMG OMG, do I like Marinette!?" freakouts can be shown instead of told. I'm usually really good at that, but I relied too much on inner monologue this go.

I think I was trying to sort out Adrien's feelings myself first, and so I need to reign myself back in now that I think I have it figured out.

So.... script form should help me out with remembering to Show not Tell so much. Once I have it all figured out it will be time to switch BACK into novel form, and filling it out more with descriptions. Script form, I can just add in the wryly for my own notation, and then fully express it within the prose of the novelled version.

For example:
PLAGG
      (whining)
My aching body. I can't move a muscle.
can then become
Plagg floated onto my bed and sprawled out on my pillow. "My aching body," he whined, "I can't move a muscle." I ignored the fact that he said it while dramatically resting a paw across his forehead and rocking side to side like a fainting Southern Bell.
Wrylies, or Parentheticals as they are technically called, are a bit frowned upon in professional scripts because it's a case of "tell; not show" in order to sort of "direct from the page" instead of having those wrylies implied by the surrounding content. However, as notations and cues to myself, I think they are the perfect move.

We'll see how this tactic works. In the meantime, I'm still going strong on my reading challenge. I finished off "The Ship of the Dead" yesterday, and I'm off to find a book set in the future for my next slot to check off.
Challenge by Reading Books Like a Boss
My dad used to be really into sci-fi, and since I now own most of his books, I figured it would be kind of easy to find something set in the future. Problem is, most of his sci-fi is from the '80s. In other words, they WERE set in the future, but we've passed the year the books were set in.

For example, I could skip over finally reading "2001: A Space Odyssey," and even the sequel "2010: Odyssey Two," in order to read the third in the series "2061: Odyssey Three." I'm sure it's fine to start with the third book in the series.... right?

Hubby has wanted me to read the Shadow series of the Ender's Game universe, but they focus on the character Bean, and I HATED that kid when I read "Ender's Game." Hubby assures me that his characterization is redeemed in the books focused on him because you learn his motivation and whatnot. Perhaps I'll cave and give it a try. I did end up loving "Speaker for the Dead" the most out of the Ender books thus far, and Hubby told me that one was his favorite too. I should probably trust the spouse, huh?

Alternatively, I still have all of Zebey's books from when she moved and attempted to donate them to the library. There are TONS of books based on the game series Halo. Hubby suggested I try grabbing one of those. My thing there, though, is that I never got into the fandom outside of watching Red vs. Blue, and so I don't know how lost I'd be. I also don't know what order I should read them in, or if that matters.

I'll give it today to find something to bring into work with me tomorrow to start my home stretch. I'll let you know what I picked.

In the meantime, for those of you who are just finishing up your celebrations:
For those of you who will be celebrating in a couple of days:
I apologize, I couldn't find anything nice that wished a happy Saturnalia.

And for those, like me, who will be celebrating on Monday:
I'm sorry if I missed your holiday. These are the main ones I know of. Please let me know what you celebrate in the comments below so I can include it next year.

Happy holidays, everyone! May your season be bright and joyful!

Ringing In 2013

Drawn by DeviantArtist Dracu-Teufel666

Okay, well I swear I didn’t intend to have a holiday hiatus.

Drawn by DeviantArtist Pluvias
My INTENTION was to postpone the December 23rd post so I had time to finish last minute Christmas stuff, and then have my belated post Christmas evening; as a way to wish you all a happy holiday. Then Christmas got crazy, I got distracted by a gift Hubby gave me, and I had to get ready for a road trip home to celebrate my cousin’s wedding this past Sunday. Which is why there also wasn’t a blog post on the 30th. Because of the bad snow storm on Saturday, I couldn’t drive down after work like intended, spend the night hanging out with the family and working on this blog post, get up early Sunday to get ready and post this entry, and then go to the ceremony at noon. INSTEAD, I got stuck in a snow bank, carefully traversed through town doing last minute errands, shoveled, went to bed early, got up at 3am to shovel some more, and then left at 4am to do a five-hour drive, arrive at my mom’s with barely enough time for me to get ready, drive to the wedding, and then by the time we got back to my mom’s I crashed.

So forgive me my past two missed weeks.

Sadly, not having time to write blog posts also meant no free time to write, period. Well, okay, I lied about NO free time, but I’ll get to that in a moment.

The week before Christmas was spent franticly attempting to finish off all the crochet gifts I was making for everyone. The only thing even remotely exciting in the world of writing is that I received an email from Devious.Editor! You guys haven’t heard that name in a WHILE, have you? Well, not only did she want to reassure me that she was still alive, but she also wanted to send me her latest chapter to edit. So those of you who are fans of her story “Fugitive” there should be another chapter up soonish. Unfortunately, I haven’t gotten around to beta reading it yet. But I aim to before this Sunday’s update. We’ll see how that goes.

So now that the holidays have come and gone, I’ll be working on cleaning house – since that’s been neglected for about two months, finding a new one, and generally relaxing after all the holiday chaos. Part of that relaxing process is going to consist of continuing two new video games, which will hopefully not, but most likely distract me from any creative projects for a little while.

One is celestialTyrant’s game that he’s keeping at our house, and the other is a Christmas gift from Hubby. Sorry about this. Blame them.

The first game is an ADORABLE Wii game called Kirby’s Epic Yarn. I cannot properly describe how amazingly cute this game is without spending an entire post just on that. So instead have a Let’s Play of the opening of the game. OH! And just FYI... Chuggaconroy's commentary is VERY similar to CT's when he plays... so it's also a bit of an insight in to him. :-D

As for the gift from Hubby? Well, let’s just say that he did really well! See, for YEARS I’ve been trying to track down “Professor Layton and the Curious Village” for my DS. I read about the game back when I used to get Nintendo Power and fell in love before even playing. Problem was I didn’t have the money to buy it when it first came out. In fact, I almost NEVER buy a new game when it first comes out because of how expensive they are. So I was waiting for the game to be old enough that the price would drop. However, the game sold out before that happened, and I couldn’t find a copy since.

The Professor Layton series is up to four games now, and I refused to play any of the other ones without first playing Curious Village. Soon the second game “Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box” became just as hard to find. I guess people just loved the games so much that once they bought them they never traded them back in to the game stores. You can just guess what two DS games I got for Christmas this year.

I’ve been playing “Curious Village” pretty much non-stop since Christmas and I just MAY be at the half way point. I LOVE this game! This series already is in my top three. May have pushed Fable out of the number two spot; depending on how well done the sequels are.

So, again, sorry. I technically HAVE had time to work on this blog post, or beta read, or work on my own story. I’ve just been distracted by video games. Guess that’s what happens when you cut them out completely. Sort of like when you “finish” your diet and just back the pounds right back on because you missed all the food you cut out.

So let’s take this time to figure out this year’s resolutions. Although I didn’t stick with ALL of my resolutions last year, I did manage to use most of them as excellent guide lines, and 2012 was more-or-less a fantastic year because of it. Let’s aim for 2013 to be even better, shall we?

RESOLUTION NUMBER ONE: Improve upon writing style; be it voice, grammar, spelling, speed, consistency, schedule, professionalism, or all of the above.
Practice makes perfect and I’m hoping to have a lot more. I really improved over the last year. Even if I didn’t consistently write my fiction, I almost always hit that Sunday Update Day goal. I need to focus harder on getting updates done on time, as well as being just as consistent with my fiction updates.
I need to take what I learned from this year’s Script Frenzy, and definitely from my first year of NaNo. I'm going to participate in every free-entry writing contest I come across. Starting with a Hey Arnold Valentine's Day contest. Entries need to be in by February 8th. Any suggestions on pairing to write about?
Even when I'm not working on contest entries - ESPECIALLY when I'm not working on contest entries - I need to crack down on scheduling time for my writing instead of “finding” time for it.
Less TV. More Writing!

RESOLUTION NUMBER TWO: Become healthier!
Not a writing resolution, but still an important one. Both becoming healthier and writing consistently seem to have the same principal of goal making. As well as having support and a “buddy” to help you stay motivated. I need to lose a few more pounds, and both Hubby and I still eat like college students. I need to be more active and possibly get Hubby more involved so it is easier for me to stay on track. Hopefully, this will spill over and help me better time manage so I can also write – and have the energy to do so.
Pass me some of that Basil Pesto Hummus if you please!

RESOLUTION NUMBER THREE: Get more organized!
Another one that is seemingly unrelated to writing at first glance. My house is a sty. Completely. I miss one day of cleaning because of this, that, and the other thing. Before I know it, the pile of dishes and laundry are both overwhelming and discouraging. Lo and behold, I then just sit on the couch, moping about how gross our house looks, but don’t actually accomplish anything. Either that or I finally snap and go in to a cleaning frenzy that lasts a full day or two.
If I can stay more organized with the house I’ll find more time to write because I’m not worried about the chores I’m neglecting. I can then just focus. I can also learn how to better avoid being discouraged when the writing piles up. I’ll get in to a more consistent rhythm with everything and that new attitude will certainly spill over in to my writing life.

RESOLUTION NUMBER FOUR: Finish What Is Truly Meant To Be: A Hey Arnold Musical
Including the chapter that has been in the works since the summer, I have eleven left before the conclusion of the story. As long as I can get a chapter out a month – which can be possible if I follow Resolution Number One – and I don’t add any more chapters to the story I can finish up before 2014! I started the story in 2010 so I think three years to finish an 18 chapter fanfic is more than enough time! Sheesh!

RESOLUTION NUMBER FIVE: Work on World Building Gyateara
For those who don't know/remember, Gyateara is the name of the world I created for my NaNo story. It started off as sort of a parody of the world of Albion from the game Fable. However, I've also done a lot of world building for my D&D character Amara. Mostly focusing on one country though. So why not put Albion and the country I created for Amara on the same planet? I sort of touched upon this idea during my last actual post. Gyateara can be this land that most of my High Fantasy stories take place - as well as quite a few D&D campaigns. To accomplish this goal, however, I have to first build Gyateara. It will be a fun project to do throughout 2013.
Maybe I can even do this along side DarkAngel1326 since she seems to be building and even bigger and bigger playground for her story "Of Blood and Honor" - as well as possible accompanying stories.

RESOLUTION NUMBER SIX: Become a better beta reader for my writers
It's pathetic that my writers have to wait days, weeks, or even months before I get around to reading their stuff. How does that help them? Now they're in a holding pattern while their muse and writing drive slips away because I can't find an hour or two to help them out. Then their readers have to wait forever for the update because of my slacking.
ChibiSunnie is such a fantastic beta for me because she's quick! Without a word, she motivates me to work daily so I can send something to her daily since she does such a quick turn around. Her quick responses drive me to keep going. She keeps me in that writing flow. I need to become more like her.
DA constantly praises me as her beta. It's time to become the Awesome Beta she keeps claiming I am!
*Scampers off to finally beta for Devious.Editor and DA*

So there you have it. My six resolutions for 2013. Let's see how well I stick to them!

Honestly, I had so many other blog posts figured out. On Christmas I was going to go on about the presents I made, the awesome ones I got, and all of that jibberjabber I have above about Professor Layton and Kirby was going to be in that long post. Then on Monday I was going to do sort of a Year In Review to reflect on 2012. Then I was going to have this post the following day to talk about my resolutions. So I had to sort of jumble everything together in to one post. I may still do that Year In Review post for Sunday, but then again I might also talk more about the Valentine's Day contest. I guess we'll just see what I feel about writing.

In the meantime... DE and DA both have stories chilling in my mailbox. So I'm off to do some reading!

HAPPY 2013 EVERYONE!
