I Might Need My Own Prescription

Another.... interesting week is in the books.

Yet again, I had neglected to audit my time, so I only vaguely recall what it was I did this past week. The vague recollection might also be a result of my mind completely swimming this week. Roughly around the time I posted my last blog update, I was starting to get sick. It was a nasty tickle in my throat and a violent, dry cough. I was light-headed and ended up with a few intense headaches from coughing so much. I tried a whole assortment of over-the-counter meds to try to stop the cough. Eventually, I landed on a Dayquil knock-off. Worked like a charm... sorta.

I don't know if the drug actually solved the coughing symptoms, or if it was a coincidental switch to a new med at the same time my symptoms “evolved.” The cough stopped, but the nose started going. And going. And going. I was a human faucet for the better part of two days. My routine was sneeze, blow nose, Purell my hands, sigh from exhaustion, spray down my work space with Lysol, and repeat. I went through an entire box of tissues within an 8-hr work day. I nearly went through a full 1-fl-oz travel-size bottle of Purell over the course of two work days. I'm not entirely sure how much of my 15oz can of Lysol I went through....

Between the coughing fits, and then the non-stop nose running and sneezing – which was borderline giving me whiplash with how violent my sneezes are as well – AND the need to still go out car shopping.... It's been an exhausting week. At least twice, I shut myself away in my bedroom to try to quarantine myself and get some rest. I also witnessed the creepy Big Brother powers of the internet. When I mentioned on Facebook how I always seem to want to watch Osmosis Jones when I have a particularly nasty head cold, I turned around to find a Real Doctor Reacts to Osmosis Jones video in my suggestion bar on YouTube. Yaaaaaaay....

Not nearly as bad as my co-worker who simply mentioned, verbally, about an item, only for said item to show up as a Facebook targeted ad. Whooo, cell phones listening in for internet companies!

Let's move away from the creepy uber-monitoring of our day-to-day lives though. But not TOO far away, because it nicely ties in with “Armada.”

With my head floating away all week, it was hard to really focus enough to write anything. I did add some words to “Prescription for Love” but I didn't quite hit my goal of having the story COMPLETED before the month was out. My updating once every three days – something I'll come back to – does seem to give me enough of a head-start, though. With my cold easing up quite a bit, I SHOULD be able to finish the story without disrupting or delaying my update schedule.

Back to “Armada” though. Since I couldn't really concentrate enough to write, I figured I'd try to read instead. It's now March, and I have yet to complete a professionally-written story. I've read fanfiction – which I'll comment on a little further down – but nothing professional. I completely slacked off in January because I was focused on “WovenHeartstrings” and February was much of the same between trying to get back on track with “One and the Same” and then derailing myself again with “Prescription for Love.”

I was sick. I was locking myself away in my room, or hiding from customers if I wasn't needed to help them. Why not use this time to finally catch up on my reading?

Guys. I'm trying, but I'm still kind of whatever about “Armada.” I still have little emotional investment in Zack, and even routinely forget that's the main character's name. Thankfully, he's addressed frequently enough that I'm reminded. Alternatively, I JUST got introduced to a character named Lex, and, frankly, I'm much more interested in her story. She seems so out-of-place even though she's supposed to be with her peers. I want to know why. Why is she getting drunk? Why is she a misfit among "her people"?

Since I've read “Ender's Game” before, and the book is even referenced a couple of times in the opening chapters of "Armada," a lot of the “big surprise” moments really.... weren't. I was expecting them, and was actually wondering what kept so long to get to them. The basic concept of the Armada game – and other such alien invasion games, movies, and TV shows – wasn't quite as sinister as I had expected, given the close ties to “Ender's Game,” so that was a nice switch-up, but still. It felt very predictable thus far. The biggest surprise to me, which, probably shouldn't have been, was who Zack's handler was. I knew they were involved in some form, I just didn't realize to what extent.

But now we're coming up on the actual alien invasion. Zack has a few internal questions about it, and these mysteries are setting me on edge. Because, if I'm right in what it all means, it kind of annoys me that all of these gamer characters aren't seeing the pattern just as quickly.

Now, this next part is going to be heavy on early Act II spoilers, but I'm only 190 pages within a 481-page novel. So, I don't know how “spoilery” this really is going to be for the story as a whole. Still, if you haven't read “Armada” yet, wish to, and don't want spoilers, feel free to scroll ahead a little bit.

So, for the history of “Armada,” in the 1960s, a NASA satellite passed Jupiter's moon Europa, and discovered the surface of this icy moon covered in a giant swastika. Unsure what it all meant, they sent a probe to examine it further. As the probe penetrated the ice surface of the moon to better examine what could have caused the anomaly, it disappeared, only to later send off a signal stating that Earthlings had desecrated sacred land, and must be destroyed. The swastika then vanished from the surface of Europa. For the next forty years, the alien life on Europa – Europans – built up an armada to attack Earth. However, some of this build to total Earthling annihilation bugged Zack.

First, why wait 40 years? Why not take out the planet with a much smaller attack group, back when we were too technologically stunted to successfully fight back? Two, why build the armada above the surface of Europa, and in plain sight of our satellites, instead of under the frozen surface, which is where the Europans clearly lived? Third, why attack with spaceships instead of sending a few scout ships with a biological weapon or the like? Fourth: Humans are only now prepared to fight back, and that's because we were able to finally figure out how to reverse engineer technology taken off of scout ships sent to Earth decades ago. Why did the clearly technologically superior Europans even allow Humanity to have their tech, let alone leave us enough time to figure it out? The Europans didn't even start their armada's trek to Earth until after humans attempted an attack on Europa. It was almost like the Europans were waiting for proof that our technology was on par with theirs, at least, to some extent. Five: after 40 years of observing Europa and experimenting on the tech landed on Earth, humans know about their technology, and the drones they send to fight us, but we still have no clue the biology of the alien invaders. Finally, the Europan armada is coming in three, increasingly more difficult waves. The first wave has the basic forces and one “mothership,” as it were, and then, about three hours later, the second wave has slightly more advanced forces and two “motherships”, followed by the third wave with the most advanced forces and three “motherships.”

So now I'm sitting here going “Holy crow! It's a Tower Defense game! The knowledge of an invading force – along with a rough estimate of how large the force is - the allotted time to set up defenses and offenses, the invaders coming in waves of increasing difficulty, the “boss battles”: the Motherships. It all feels like a Tower Defense game.” I then wondered if the “twist” of the story will be that the Europans think THEY are playing a game the whole time. They have seen Earth's peace offerings of media, and somehow a tower defense-like game was included, so the Europans decide to “play.” They set up a false threat of total annihilation, since that's what happens in that style of game, and then they make sure we are prepared for the invasion by letting us know how many players are involved, and even send us some tech to use so it's a more even playing field. The Europans use drones instead of their actual populous, so it's not like they're endangering their own people by “playing.”

I swear, if it turns out that the Europans are playing offense on a Tower Defense game and NOT. A. SINGLE. CHARACTER. NOTICES. THIS? I'll probably literally throw the book across the room.

Come on, Ernest Cline, surprise me, here.

OKAY! SPOILERS OVER NOW! YOU CAN START READING AGAIN IF YOU SKIPPED THE LAST PART!

Long story short? “Armada” just doesn't have the same magic to it – for me, at least – as “Ready Player One” did, and that might be why I'm not flipping through the pages quite as quickly. Same thing happened when I went through the Kane Chronicles books by Rick Riordan, and when I attempted to read “Atlas Shrugged” a couple of years back.

Part of me gets why so many people are turning from professionally published stories, and turning towards fanfiction for most of their reading entertainment. I find myself unintentionally doing the same thing. First of all, you know the world and/or the characters already. You know you enjoy them. Secondly, the episodic nature of chapters being publicly posted one-by-one makes them less daunting to read, and adds excitement when you see a story you follow updated. I can only think of three real downsides: (1) it's not professionally edited, so you do have to weed through stories that could have been improved with a nice polish, (2) episodic chapter updates may disengage the reader, depending on how long it takes to update the story, because the reader may forget what happened in the chapter(s) before the update, and (3) the author may abandon the project.

I've lucked out, and only stumbled upon one or two “Hey, Arnold!” stories that were abandoned, and the only “abandoned” Miraculous story I read was TaurusPixie's “Immortal Bond,” but that was because the plot wasn't working as-is, so she's starting it over from scratch. I'll read the completed story eventually.

Speaking of reading fanfiction, a story I follow updated this week, so I did sneak that in along with my “Armada” readings.

The story started off as a one-shot, but then she enjoyed the story she created, and she got enough love for her one-shot, that she decided to continue. It's an “Enemy AU,” which usually translates to an Alternate Universe where Cat Noir is on Hawk Moth's side and battles against Ladybug. One of the first ML fanfics I read – "Curiosity andSatisfaction" by imthepunchlord – was an Enemy AU. If you find the right author, the Enemy AU is very intriguing; seeing how Adrien and Marinette interact when they're enemies instead of allies.

Anyway, Discordant Sonata is up to 4 chapters. There was a content warning in the latest chapter, however. So if you are triggered by claustrophobia and/or a character dealing with a panic attack, maybe you should skip this chapter....

Otherwise, go read it. I am really enjoying this story, and cannot wait for more. Fair warning before any new readers get into Eden's work, though. She's a busy mother who focuses on her artwork, so there could be a month or two wait between updates. Please do not harass her if you don't think she's updating regularly enough.

Oh, and speaking of "Enemy AU" fanfics, while it's not QUIIIIIIITE the same, HariWrites has that Con-man/Thief AU story I talked about last year: "Mr. Lucky and the Cat." It was a really good read. I highly suggest you check it out. However, you only have until March 31st, 2019 to do so. She just posted, as a tag-on chapter, that she's planning on reworking and publishing the story. So she is going to take it off of AO3 by the end of the month. Luckily, AO3 allows for downloads. So go snag it now while you can!

As for my own story, well, I have three chapters of “Prescription for Love” up. The chapters are short, so the whole story thus far is only 3700+ words long. I had chapters of “Peeping Tomcat” longer than that. Much longer than that. About three times longer....

I write long chapters...

This time, though! This time I have little bite-sized ones. Chapter 1 was only about 1000 words, chapter 2 was about 1100, and chapter 3 just passed 1500.

AAAAACTUALLY.... Funny thing about the latest chapter. I had been writing down how many words each section was after I wrote it. By the time I finished the sixth chapter, which should be the last one told from Kagami's perspective, the word count was Adrien: 4929, Kagami: 4982. So, without even meaning to, I had both characters have almost identical amount of page-time. Adrien was then going to blow Kagami out of the water as he finished up the story, adding roughly another 1000 words to his count, but the story was originally going to be his, so it seemed fitting.

Then, Sunday evening, as I hid away to polish up the third chapter to post, I realized it didn't really work.

As a transitional scene, it wasn't all that bad. As a chapter, though? Nothing happened. There was no action, no agency. Adrien returned from the akuma attack, noted how strange it was that his father was in a bathroom for over an hour, realized that it appeared he was in the bathroom for just as long, attempted and failed to have an engaging conversation with Kagami, and listened to music.

I needed more. This would have been the only chapter that didn't focus on the “love letter” Adrien got from Marinette, so that needed to be fixed at the very least. Another 500 words - and an hour - later, and I was satisfied with the chapter finally. So much for Kagami having almost even page-time with Adrien, though. Buuuut, I haven't edited the next chapters yet, so who knows?

In the meantime, here are the next two chapters.

Chapter 4 of PfL will be live sometime tomorrow evening.
Not my best work, I know. This is why I'm not a cover artist.
I need to find the magic I had for PT when I create the cover for OatS....
The story has been getting a moderate amount of love. Oddly enough, it's the first story I have with almost identical amount of hits between FFN and AO3. Over on FFN, the story has had 797 hits. AO3 has had 767. A fun little factoid.

On FFN, I've had 7 reviews from 4 different readers. On AO3, I've had one reviewer, but they've reviewed all three chapters so far. The posting on FFN has had 14 faves and 15 follows, whereas on AO3, it has had 46 kudos and 5 bookmarks.

Like I said: moderate success.

To be honest, considering how far past the episode my story is dragging, and how it is directly tied to an episode, I'm surprised I'm getting even that much love. So, if you're one of those readers, thank you.

Over on Tumblr, my announcement of the new story received five likes. The promo for the second chapter jumped up to 16 likes. The promo for the third chapter this past Sunday is at 12 likes. So, I'm getting some viewership on Tumblr.

I really need to remember to sample some of the work though..... I keep forgetting that bit.

Oh! Another cool thing about Tumblr, which kind of relates to those likes and views? I garnered another 7 new followers this week. Which means I'm now at over 100 followers! Barely a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things, but it's an exciting milestone to me.

Remember, I mostly reblog stuff. I rarely post anything original. I even started up a tag - LycoRogue Original - to help filter out the few bits I actually ADD to the site. It's mostly promos for my stories and this blog.

Point being, having 100 people follow me, and only have about six of them be IRL friends? That's super cool to me. So, if you're a follower, thanks. Makes me feel special.

One last thing before I pretend I'm going to be productive this week. My thumbdrive was acting up yet again the past few days, so I decided to reformat it for about the fifth time. Before doing so, though, I spent two days going through all of the files to make sure I have them saved elsewhere first. Part of this task, and the reason it kept so long, was comparing files with identical names but different modification dates. I wanted to compare and contrast to see which version I wanted to keep, and if the versions were different enough, I renamed the older one and shoved it in an "original version" folder. I don't delete files. I don't get rid of past versions of something I've polished. First of all, it helps me see where I came from and the progress I made in the story. Secondly, there may have been something good in that old version that just didn't quite work with the story at the time. I like being able to go back to those older versions to gold-mine for bits I could use in my newer stories. Finally, I like having older, maybe even cringey-er, versions to show to aspiring writers. If they really enjoy my work, and may even think my writing is far above their capabilities, I like to show them that I start from trash just as much as they do. It's all about practice and polish. Putting in the work after the story is out of your head.

That's just my personal philosophy though.

My point being, that reading through these files meant reading through what I have so far for OatS. And it restarted my drive to really get this story done. It's been delayed so many times, and it looks like my derailment in both January and February has pushed back the release once more. Probably looking at a June/July release now, unless I can make magic happen during April's Camp NaNoWriMo. Still, if you have been waiting for this story, know that I haven't abandoned the idea. I still absolutely want to write it. I just need to stop working on other plot-bunnies in the meantime....

Speaking of, I still need to finish PfL and edit the next chapter for tomorrow. So I should jet. Catch you next week!

Oh, and happy Donut Day/Fat Tuesday/Faschnaut Day/Shrove Tuesday/etc....

Farewell, Geodude

It's been a weird week. I felt like I barely did anything, but I also felt exhausted from everything I did....

I slacked off this week and didn't really write anything down in my daily planner, where I audit my time to make sure I'm not slacking off. Yes. I know the irony....
Did I meme correctly?
Characters from the anime Ouran High School Host Club
As I've mentioned many times in the past, for whatever reason Irony just LOVES to hang out with me... go figure.

Meh. Could be worse. Could be this....
Technically, it's more my coworker's daughter that drama loves...
The worst part is neither of those poor women ever start it.
Characters from the anime Fairy Tail
Anyway, enough of me showing off how bad I am at meme-ing....

My point is that I don't really know WHAT happened this week, because, like I said, I feel like I did a lot and yet nothing at the same time.

Well, to start, I cleaned my apartment a bit, ran around to do my normal errands, and did both days of Zumba, which is something I don't think I've done since before Christmas. Boy did my legs remind me of that. I also wrote more of my one-shot inspired by the "Miraculous Ladybug" episode Backwarder, while somehow simultaneously not finishing it due to procrastination.

Friday and Saturday the store was SLAMMED, so I didn't have any time to write while at work. Friday I had Wolfhearted over to watch Backwarder and Stormy Weather 2, and we also briefly discussed characters for a campaign he wants to run in the near future. No post-work writing there. Then, Saturday, I was NOT feeling well. I hid in my room after work. Originally it was because my lower back had been throbbing all day and I wanted to lie down. However, as the day progressed, my stomach started to act up, so my lie down to write after work turned into lie down and watch hours worth of YouTube videos because I couldn't find the energy to write.

In truth, I should have spent the time at least reading more of "Armada" since I only finished up the first act of the story yesterday afternoon. I still have about 300 pages to read! I don't think I'm finishing by the end of the month.....

Ernest Cline, based only on the first act of the book, definitely did not have lightning strike twice. The book is entertaining, but doesn't seem to be as gripping and page-turning as "Ready Player One" was. I guess I'm more into 80s nostalgia with a side of gaming than I am into alien invasion First Person Shooter gaming with a side of 80s and early 90s nostalgia. We'll see if the story picks up steam now that I'm in the main bulk of the tale...

But back to my own writing.

Sunday I was able to do some editing and add in a few more paragraphs, but I was still nursing my back and stomach, while also prepping myself to go see "How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World."

We had a whole crew of us hitting up the local theater: six in all.

The movie was gorgeous to watch, and while there are some tweaks I would have done with the story, all-in-all, it was the perfect close to the franchise. It also gave the six of us a nice running gag for the next few weeks at least:
"CRY INTO MY MANLY BEARD!"
It was such an enjoyable movie, and one we were so excited to watch, that not only didn't I neglect to do more writing after Hubby and I got home, but I also neglected to watch The Oscars as well.... I think this is the first one I've missed since I started learning about video production in college.
Again, Irony seems to really love me... PAINFULLY so....
Characters from the anime Fullmetal Alchemist
Best part is, if missing the Oscars because I was watching a movie wasn't enough, I also spent the couple of hours between work and the movie with Omnibladestrike in order to - get this - help him write his story! Yup. I didn't work on my writing because I was helping someone else with their own.

Whoops!

Meh, it was worth it though. Omni was in a funk for a while, and decided to just start his whole novel from scratch to try to build a better foundation. Especially since the novel he's been working on for the past few years is actually the precursor to the original novel he wanted to tell. So he has to make sure he's happy with the groundwork he's laying with this tale.

I want to encourage that, and help it grow.

Awww, just look how nurturing Magi is. The way she directs Crysta's hand and then just proudly watches as Crysta rebuilds from the crumpled remains of the former tree?
Last one of these memes, I swear
Characters from the movie FernGully: The Last Rainforest
Okay, I was probably stroking my own ego a bit there with this comparison, but you get the idea....

Alright, so that was my weekend, but what about before that? Or after it?

Well... I did write a LITTLE at work on Thursday, but then my brain died on me, so Thursday night was spent editing, a little extra writing, and screen captures so I could design cover art for my story. A task I never actually completed.... I then researched potential name ideas to see if I had a unique one to use.

Okay, so the title I'm going with is fine. No hits on either AO3 or FFN. However, the first title I was going to go with? "For You"? Yeah... there's like 30 fanfics in the Miraculous fandom alone that has that title....

And this is why I check.

Wednesday though! Wednesday I wrote while doing laundry. I was then going to write some more while waiting for my car to be inspected and get an oil change. I was doing well.

And then I wasn't.

Turns out that, while I knew the problem with my high beams, and had a creative way to work around it, I had more issues with my car than I thought. For one, even with my MacGyvering, the high beams not properly working is enough to not pass inspection. Two: my back-up lights weren't working either. The biggen, though, is that my axles were all rusting through. The mechanic even warned me that I'm "one good pothole away from losing a tire."

YAY!

So, while the car is still driveable, there is no hope of it passing inspection, which expires on March 1st. Which means, it's time to say goodbye to another car.

Farewell, Geodude, you served me decently for three years.

It is actually MUCH smaller than it probably looks in this picture.
I also love that every car I've owned has that pin-stripe along the sides.
Rozsavaria got me that sticker to turn my Geo Metro into a GEODUDE Metro.
Fainted Geodude from Pokemon
Basically my car as of March....
So the rest of Wednesday consisted of searching the internet for cars I can buy for no more than $2000, calming my mother and sister down, Zumba, "The Masked Singer" tv show, and more online car searching. Noooooot really much time to write.

Which also means that, yes, the rest of the week did have me periodically checking out cars online in my downtime as well. Today is my first day off since I found out about my Geodude, so it's being largely spent checking out cars. Hopefully I can find one before tonight's writer's group meeting so I don't have to miss YET. ANOTHER. ONE.

If I can't find a car today, Friday is my next chance. Thankfully, Hubby's one friend offered us a loaner car, should we strike out today.

......

Soooooo, uh.... yeah.

There you have it.

My week largely consisted of me procrastinating, nursing myself back to health - which I'm still kinda, sorta doing - and looking for a new car.

Whooo!

I DID manage to do three things yesterday though.

One: Realize the story I've been working on could be a chaptered novelette. I was originally using line breaks to jump from Adrien's POV to Kagami's and back. However, each scene is at least 1000 words long, so why not make short chapters instead?

Two: Managed to finish up my first 2000+ word section - now chapter - of the story, as well as start up the penultimate chapter.

Three: Post the first chapter online, and set it up that I'll post the second one Thursday evening. I figured, an "every 3 days" schedule will be fairly fast of a turn-around, but still afford me enough time to finish the story and polish it while still dealing with the mess my life fell into this week.

Unlike my other stories, my newest one is basically embedded within an episode of Miraculous Ladybug. It is very spoilerific for the episode, so if you haven't watched Backwarder and don't want spoilers, I'd skip over this story.

Otherwise, you probably don't really NEED to know more about the show than what I talk about in this blog, so feel free to check it out, even if you don't watch the show. Each chapter should be between 1000 and 1600 words, except for the fifth one, which will be pushing closer to 2500 words. Still, super short considering my normal chapters, right?

Without further ado, I present you with:
"Prescription for Love"
On FanFiction            On ArchiveOfOurOwn            On DeviantArt
SUMMARY:
This was not the weekend away Kagami was expecting, but then again, what was written on Marinette's letter wasn't what Adrien as expecting either. As Kagami tries to understand Adrien's confusion, and find time to try to woo him from Marinette, Adrien is busy trying to understand Marinette's train-side send-off, and finding a pharmacy.
I posted "Prescription for Love" - a story that was timely two weeks ago... - at 8:30 last night, and already had one review, 3 follows/bookmarks, 14 faves/kudos, and 198 hits by the time I went to bed at 11:30. I didn't even remember to promote the story! Short and sweet, and dealing with one of the most talked about episodes still, was a good way to go apparently. We'll see how people feel about that once I get to Kagami's side of the story....

It's going to be hard for me to wait until Thursday to post the next part.

I also don't know what to read at group tonight. Do I continue with reading "Woven Heartstrings" even though that story is long done, Christmas is far enough past that my tree is actually down, and they haven't heard more than the first chapter in months? Do I start them on "Prescription for Love" even though I need to basically explain the whole subplot of Backwarder before starting? Or do I go back to reading bits of "One and the Same"?

I guess I could offer all three up for them to decide? This is the only real problem with quickly turning out smaller works. And having meetings continuously cancelled due to snow...

Anyway, I have until I go to bed on Thursday to accomplish two of three things:
  1. Find myself a new car
  2. Complete PfL so I can hit my goal, even if the whole thing isn't POSTED by the close of the month.
  3. Use one of two new plot bunny ideas to write a legit SHORT, SHOOOOOORT, SNIIIIIIIPPET of a story so a completed new story is fully posted online by the end of the month.
Preferably, I'd like the new car to be one of the two things I accomplish....

One final note before I go car hunting. My writing group co-member has done his soft-launches the past month or so, but this Saturday, March 2nd, is his official book launch for "Parabellum."
Summary:
How does a POW become a spy? And why? And what the hell is a GALCO? These are only a few of the questions Carson Nowak needs answers to. Carson Nowak is a CIA contractor like none you’ve ever met before. Carson is tasked with retrieving a trunk full of documents. The order comes not from the Agency or even the President, but a higher authority: his nana. In addition to the documents, the trunk also contains a war relic tied to a mysterious death just before D-Day. Tracing the provenance of this relic triggers a chain of events that not only unlocks Carson’s family history but garners the interest of a South American hit squad. Carson must navigate the challenges of protecting his family, maintaining his business, ensuring the safety of a young refugee developing a revolutionary weapons system, and deal with an infuriating curmudgeon. Along the way he falls in love. To navigate these challenges, he enlists the help of a pencil-thin code breaker, a claustrophobic corpsman and a Haitian nurse.

PARABELLUM, the novel, is spy/mystery/thriller novel set in Upstate NY, with flashbacks to both World War I and World War II.
PARABELLUM, the word, is a Latin term which loosely translates to “When you live in peace, Prepare for war”.
The writing style is a mash-up of C.J. Box meets Daniel Silva, meets John le Carre.
You can find the novel in both paperback and ebook on Amazon. I already shared the link just above the picture, but here's another one just to be sure you see it.

If you're into modern-historical - as in, the summer of 2001 - stories, and/or spy thriller novels, then go check this one out. If you personally don't want to shell out the few bucks, then ask your library to order a copy that you could then borrow. Let's get the word out there!

Man, between "Parabellum" and "Leather and Lies," my friends will convert me to a spy-thriller reader in no time.

Seems only fair, considering how many I'm converting to fanfiction enthusiasts....

Speaking of which, there will be no fanfic to be enthused about if I don't find a car with enough time left for me to write! So I better get going.

The Epic Tale of Two Episodes

Hey, guys, guess what happened yesterday?

If you guessed "it snowed" you win a sticker.
Eh, at least it was on a Monday, and not Tuesday. Yet. Again.

Then again, I don't have writing group tonight, so maybe it just snows on Tuesdays I have that evening meeting...???

As for writing, well.... I'm sort of at equal parts of "did a lot" and "barely had a chance to touch it."

Last week we got two new episodes for "Miraculous Ladybug." The first came out last Tuesday evening and was called Backwarder and the second came out on Valentine's day, and that one was called Stormy Weather 2.

At first, I was a bit bummed that we didn't have a more romance-centered episode, such as Weredad, for Valentine's day, but as Lawbreaker13 noted on Tumblr, there are a lot of parallels that tied Stormy Weather 2 back to the Dark Cupid episode.

Now, before I continue, I want to seriously point out that if you're in the fandom, and want a really good analysis of the episode Stormy Weather 2, you should check out that link to lawbreaker13's review. They even had their analysis pretty much confirmed as the writers' aim via the show's creator: Thomas Astruc saw my post you guys!

I haven't shared it on my tumblr blog yet because I want to re-watch the episode, that way I could throw in some of my thoughts as well. I just haven't had the chance to do a good rewatch, especially since I'm waiting for Wolfhearted. There are a few bits that I'm a bit... unsure of.... with Lawbreaker13's analysis, and wanted to include a sort of counter-argument, but, again, I haven't had a chance yet.

Anyway, back to the parallels between Stormy Weather 2 and Dark Cupid. Here's a real quick recap of the latter episode for those who aren't in the fandom:
In the season 1 episode Dark Cupid, the characters are celebrating Valentine's Day. There's a lot to unpack in this episode, but most of that isn't important for the parallels used in Stormy Weather 2. The long and short is that Marinette's classmate Kim tries to confess his crush on Chloe, only to be rejected and humiliated. He then transforms into Dark Cupid, who has the ability to create hatred with his arrows, as opposed to Cupid's ability to create love. He uses the power to break up any form of affection he sees: romantic or otherwise. He manages to hit Cat Noir with an arrow, and Ladybug can only break the spell with True Love's Kiss. It's kind of a big deal within the fandom. However, the part that's important is this:

While in class, Adrien works on a love poem for Ladybug, but he never actually names the subject of his poem within the writing. By the end of the school day, he gives up on his project and throws it out. Marinette, who had been trying to see what he was writing the whole time, pulls the crumpled paper out of the trash. As she wonders who the love poem is for, Tikki, who, at this point, doesn't know Adrien is Cat Noir, suggests that the lines are describing Marinette. Convinced that Tikki might be right, Marinette brings the poem home. She then decides that she's going to write Adrien a responding poem for Valentine's Day, and actually follows through with it. She even mails it to him. Problem is, Alya distracted her as she was finishing, and she forgot to sign her name. Adrien finds the unsigned valentine, and, since it answered his poem about Ladybug, daydreams that his superhero partner is the one who wrote him back.
Sorry, that was still kind of long, but trust me, that was "quick" for our purposes. So, how does this run parallel with the most recent episode, making Stormy Weather 2 an appropriate Valentine's Day episode? Well, towards the end of their review and analysis, lawbreaker13 pointed out the call-back to the poems.

We haven't had a call-back to them yet in the series, and then, towards the beginning of this episode, Marinette re-reads the poem Adrien penned. The exact scene of Adrien throwing it out, and Marinette retrieving the paper, is even shown in a flashback. Not only that, but it's shown at nearly the exact same time in both episodes. In Dark Cupid, Adrien throws the poem out at roughly a minute-and-a-half into the episode, and Marinette reads the poem out loud about 2mins in. For Stormy Weather 2, the shot of Adrien throwing out the poem shows up just shy of 3minutes in, overlapped with voice over of Marinette reading the last lines of the poem.

Likewise, at the end of Dark Cupid, at 19minutes and 47seconds in, Plagg is teasing Adrien about being brainwashed and doing cruel things towards Ladybug. Adrien is already upset about the whole thing, as well as his failed attempts to let Ladybug know how much he cares for her. In Stormy Weather 2, Plagg is again pointing out the failure of Adrien's wooing of Ladybug at nearly the exact same time: 19minutes and 35seconds in.

Fair warning, the rest of this is going to include minor spoilers for the Stormy Weather 2 episode, so please just scroll past if you want to avoid those.

Okay, now back to Dark Cupid, Plagg says: "What's the big deal? You've got so many cards from all of these lady fans of yours, take your pick!" He then digs through the mountain of valentines, tossing Marinette's heart-shaped one onto the bed next to Adrien. In Stormy Weather 2, Plagg says: "Why don't you look for another girl to love? One who's actually available?" He then dumps Adrien's mountain of valentines onto his bed. Since this isn't specifically another Valentine's Day special, we're not entirely sure if it's been a full year since Dark Cupid, so this pile could still be from that V'day, but none of the other letters are opened; neither are the gifts. We won't focus on that right now. The point is that Marinette's unsigned valentine to Adrien is sitting on the top of this pile, and it is once again on Adrien's bed.

In Dark Cupid, Adrien picks up the unsigned valentine and reads it at the 20minute mark. He does the same at 19:40 in Stormy Weather 2. Again, nearly identical times within the episodes. Keeping with that parallel timing, at 20:28 in the Dark Cupid episode, an actual ladybug lands on the open valentine, right about where the signature should be. This is when Adrien thinks "maybe Ladybug sent it?" Jumping to the Stormy Weather 2 episode, Nathalie drops off schoolwork from Marinette at roughly the same time. Adrien even comments, at 20:05, that he never noticed before that Marinette's handwriting looks a lot like his unsigned valentine. So, at nearly identical times in the episodes, Adrien tries to figure out who wrote the valentine to him.

All of that said, the reason Stormy Weather 2 makes a good episode for Valentine's Day consists of more than its connection to Dark Cupid. There is also a nice chunk of overall character development and insight showcased in the episode, most of which has romantic undertones. Finally, the bit that most of the fans seem to hate about this episode is the fact that it's largely seen as "simply" a recap episode. At least half of the episode was made up of flashbacks, overdubbed by introspective voice overs. This "flaw" is the last reason why the episode was great for V'day: there were a lot of flashbacks of Marinette pining over Adrien, Cat Noir pining over Ladybug, and even Nathalie's growing affection towards Adrien and romantic feelings towards Gabriel.

OKAY! SPOILERS OVER NOW! YOU CAN START READING AGAIN IF YOU SKIPPED THE LAST PART!

For those of you that skipped the above, the spoiler-free long-and-short is: Stormy Weather 2 has strong connections to the previous Valentine's Day episode, as well as showcased Marinette's feelings for Adrien, Cat Noir's love for Ladybug, and Nathalie's affection - both paternal and romantic - to Adrien and Gabriel, respectively. All-in-all, even though it wasn't overtly a "Valentine's Episode", it was still a very appropriate one to air on Valentine's day.

But I spent too much time talking about that episode. Although, as I pointed out in that spoiler section, it IS a good reference point for fanfic writers. If I hadn't already tackled my thoughts on Adrien's feelings for Marinette in “Peeping Tomcat” I would have definitely used bits from this episode for reference points. I'm glad to know that I seemed to have understood Adrien enough to kinda get it right... I'll definitely use this episode for character insight reference when I continue my work on "One and the Same."

Speaking of working on OatS, as I said at the start of this week's blog, I did a lot of writing, and yet barely any at all. It's a weird contradiction, I know.

So we'll start with the "not much at all" bits. I had two zero-days in a row, which, happily, has been a rare occurrence this year thus far. Although Tuesdays tend to only see me writing my blog posts, I've still had full weeks where I didn't have a single Zero-Day, and other weeks where I've only had one missed day. Still others did have two, but they were separated by multiple writing-days in a row. After a more consistent writing schedule such as that, it felt like I really slacked off by not really writing anything this weekend.

I also didn't add to my "One and the Same" manuscript this past week, so that was another bit of disappointment.

I didn't even have a short story up for Valentine's Day like I wanted. Instead, I recycled romantic Tumblr Exclusives and fluffy scenes from PT as my Valentine's Day contribution.

My first one is probably my personal favorite: Stranger in a White Dress. While it had 19 notes on Tumblr when I first posted it in May, it didn't really get any new love when I reblogged it on Thursday. It's a Gabriel and Emilie story, and the fans probably weren't into that for their V'day.

The second story I reblogged just a few minutes later was "Kisses", my Lukanette story I wrote shortly after we were introduced to the character of Luka. Originally, it had 64 notes on it. My reblog for Valentine's Day only added two more - three if you count a comment on it - but it's still more than SiaWD got. Plus, one of those likes, and the comment, were by the lovely ChibiSunnie.

You see, my writing is almost dauntingly long, in case you somehow didn't notice....

So, the massively time-crunched Chibi doesn't really get the chance to read my writing anymore, especially since it's in a fandom she's not a part of. She did tell me that she enjoyed being able to finally see some of my more bite-sized snippets of writing so she could appreciate what I add to the ML fandom.
Chibi: Awww you write such sweet romance stories for this fandom! ^_^
Chibi, you, darling, are so sweet for saying so, and for taking the time to read something from a fandom you're not a part of.

Figuring Valentine's Day was also a good time to try to bring more readers to PT again, I did a bit of promotion as well. I swiped a small snippet from chapter 4 of my story, and posted it as a sample scene for V'day. I hoped the Love Square gooiness would be more of what The People wanted for their holiday, and that it would lend itself to bring some more traffic to my story.

So, to get that Adrienette fluffiness out in the world, I sampled the movie pseudo-date they had: A Movie Date

It's received 4 likes. Not the traction I was hoping for, but it's still 4, presumably new, readers. Plus, the excerpt was still nearly 3000 words long, so it may have been too much for people to read on Tumblr. Perhaps they just used the link to AO3 and added it to their Read Later lists. Who knows?

Likewise, "Stranger in a White Dress" was just over 2000 words, whereas "Kisses" isn't even 800 words long. Plus, "Kisses" was in a ship a lot of people enjoy. So, I guess it makes sense what is and isn't getting notes on Tumblr if it's broken down like that.

I did receive one new Tumblr follower on the 14th, which could be because of my writing, but it could also be because of what I reblog, or even my comment about Chloe being surprisingly absent thus far this season. That observation has garnered me 30 notes between the likes, reblogs, and comments. Regardless, it's one more follower, which means one more person to see when I post new writing. I'm actually up to 96 followers on Tumblr. It's still small peanuts, but it IS nearly 100 people who make up a potential readership base. I'll take it.

Especially since I gained 7 new followers this past week. As I mentioned, one started following on the 14th, but I also added 4 more since the 15th. Again, I have no clue what it is about my Tumblr blog that attracted them enough to want to follow me, but it's nice to know that I'm slowly gaining more and more of a fanbase, as it were.

It was because of this growing fanbase that I figured I'd try to do another promotion attempt for PT.

As I commented above,

Anyway, whether you read the spoiler box or not, the point is that the fandom is currently caught up with how Adrien is SOMEHOW completely socially blind still. It's frustrating, but in such a good way, for me, at least. A lot of people are getting irritated by how much the Love Square is being drawn out with virtually no advancement in the relationships. However... I personally think there have been A LOT of growth in at least the LadyNoir and Adrienette corners of the Love Square, but people grow affection - true, long-lasting, deep affection - towards each other SLOWLY. I'm loving how much it's dragged out. At least it hasn't gotten as annoyingly frustrating as the Lois and Clark Will-They-Won't-They from "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman", and I hear some of the worst "Will-They-Won't-They" was from shows like X-Files or Bones. Love Square drag-out is nothing compared to the live action shows aimed at the 18+ demographics.

Point is, I figured I'd attempt to shamelessly cash in on the "Adrien is an idiot!" discussion stemming from Stormy Weather 2, and, in part, Backwarder. I again grabbed a snippet from PT - this time "only" 1530 words long - and shared it to Tumblr.

I think I did a much better job at bookending the snippet to encourage readers to go to the full story this time though. For example, compare the first snippet for A Movie Date vs the snippet Confusion.

For those who may not be able to read the above image, it says:
I can't let Valentine's Day close out without some Love Square fluffiness. So how about a pseudo-date between Adrien and Marinette (with a sprinkling of DJWifi) from my story “Peeping Tomcat”?
I then include a few paragraphs to try to entice people to read, before dropping a "read more" link so it's not this epically, and possibly annoyingly, long post people have to scroll through on their dash. At the end of the snippet, hidden within the "read more" is this closing.
Again, in case you can't read/see the above picture, this is what it says:
*Excerpt from chapter 4: Normal. To read the full chapter, you can check it out on AO3 here. Or, if you prefer, you can find it on FFN or DA.

If you'd like to read the story from the beginning, you can check it out on AO3, on FFN, or on DA.
It's not.... bad? But it also could be better. So when I promoted the snippet from the seventh chapter of PT, I switched up the formatting to this.
  1. I started off by commenting on the big discussion being had around the fandom, and how it made me think of my story, complete with the link to the story from the beginning. This way, if people didn't want to read on Tumblr, they had access to my story on AO3 right away.
  2. I then gave a summary for PT, as well as the status - that it's complete, has 17 chapters, and is over 84,000 words long - the ships showcased, and the rating for the story. I even made sure to off-set this information to make it easier to read.
  3. I then finished with apologizing for the shameless plug, called out what could be the appeal of that particular part of the story, linked to the chapter the snippet was from - again, in case people just wanted to read it on AO3 instead of Tumblr - before closing out my intro with a call to the main character focused on in the snippet: Adrien
Once more, I had a line break to separate the intro from the story itself, dropped a couple of potentially enticing paragraphs, and finished with a "read more" link so I wouldn't flood people's dash.

At the end of the snippet, I also switched up the formatting to one I think worked out better.
  1. I put the non-story elements promoting where to find more of my writing in italics. I hoped the italics would draw eyes to it, offset it from the story outside of the simple line break, and to make the non-italicized, bold links stand out more.
  2. I had a sort of call to action with the opening question of "Want to read more?"
  3. I provided only one link - to AO3, the site most of Tumblr users seem to prefer - to the rest of the chapter to avoid overwhelming people.
  4. I used another call to action, as well as a bit of a tongue-in-cheek comment about reading the story from the start, before promoting where to find the story off of Tumblr.
  5. I have commas separating the different links, and off-set both them and the link to the chapter itself on their own lines. It helps draw the eyes and make the links stand out more.
  6. I finished with a thank you to the readers who made it to the end of my long post.
I'm not sure if these format switch-ups helped at all, or if the subject matter was closer to what people wanted to read, or if it was simply because it was a shorter piece, but I did get more of a response from my "Confusion" snippet.

Back-tracking to "A Movie Date," that snippet has had 4 likes. One from Chibi, who also said "Awwww this was really cute! ^_^"  To which, I responded that she has officially read part of PT, and can stop feeling guilty about not getting to it yet.

Speaking of, Chibi has a few new short stories up on her AO3 account. Sadly, I've been a bit of a slacker and haven't gotten to read them yet, but YOU can while Chibi is waiting for me.

Chibi, I am SOOOOO sorry I've been slacking off on sharing your stories, or even reading these short tales. But let's give this girl some love. I HAVE read snippets of a lot of these as she asked for some advice - be it beta reading, quick polishes, or figuring out which rating to give her stories - and I greatly enjoyed them, even if I wasn't in the fandom. So give them a shot. They are a beautiful representation of sweet, (mostly) innocent, gay love. Something that doesn't seem to be showcased enough in mainstream media, at least here in America, so I'm glad fanfiction writers pick up the slack.

Anyway, getting back to my promotions on Tumblr, as I said, the snippet of the Adrienette pseudo-date received 4 likes. I also received a new story favorite for PT two days later. I'm not sure if the two are related, but I'm running with it.

On the 17th I then shared the snippet from chapter 7: Confusion. That short received 14 likes in comparison to "A Movie Date." I also received my most recent follower on Tumblr shortly after I shared that snippet. Again, I don't know if the two are related, but I like the chances. I also received a new author favorite on the 17th over on FFN. Still not sure if it was thanks to my promotions on Tumblr, but it made me feel good to see that alert in my email.

Sunday, the 17th, also brought me a new comment on PT's posting over on AO3:
kitdubhran: Just caught up on this. Loved the conclusion. Can't wait to see more of this, whenever you can post it. ❤️❤️❤️
Lastly, I've received two new guest kudos on AO3 for PT over the past two days. So.... maybe the shameless plug worked? Maybe my story got out to more people, slowly but surely?

I am planning on posting more promotions for PT the closer I get to publishing "One and the Same." That way people can have a more seamless flow into the sequel. Get that hype up. I need to actually WRITE OatS though....

Instead... well.... I've talked a lot about the latest episode Stormy Weather 2, but I haven't said much about Backwarder. It is one of my favorite episodes for multiple reasons. We get to meet important people for both Master Fu and Kagami. We get some more of Master Fu's backstory. There is character development. There is romance. There's also a sort of comedy of errors, which I'm a huge fan of.

Sane Man in an Insane World is a hard comedic trope for me to get behind; I tend to get frustrated at the collective stupidity, which is why I nearly hurled "Big Trouble" by Dave Barry across the room as I got to the closing chapters. Still loved the book, but that trope annoys me. Comedy of Errors though? I'll eat that up all the time. Both tropes center around at least one person trying to navigate a situation they should never expect to be in, and have to explain themselves when they should never need to under normal circumstances. Comedy of Errors, though, focuses on how the misunderstandings could still be logical even with intelligent people, whereas Sane Man in an Insane World is mostly frustrating to me because of the stupidity of everyone. The exceptions are stories like Idiocracy, because at least then I know what I'm getting into, and can enjoy the comedic trope.

Anyway, Comedy of Errors. The error itself is kind of a major plot point in Backwarder, so I won't even attempt a spoiler box about it, because it's too hard to sum up for anyone skipping over spoilers for the show. What I will say is that it brings up a LOT of questions regarding Adrien's POV, which isn't shown much that episode.

Naturally, I wanted to give my take on Adrien's thoughts about the episode. It was supposed to be simple. It was supposed to be quick. It was supposed to be done and up on Wednesday, while the episode was still fresh in everyone's mind.

As per usual with my stories, I'm running super long on this concept as the insight delve went deeper than expected, and so I'm STILL writing the darn thing. A Tumblr Exclusive one-shot that was only supposed to be a thousand words or so is now up to about 4500 words.... and counting. I'm maybe 2/3rds of the way through the story I want to tell.

Whoops....

To be fair, I didn't have the time to write on Sunday or Saturday because we were slammed at work, people invaded after work, and when we didn't have house guests, I ended up passing out on the couch. Hubby and I also had nights in together for Valentine's Day. It's been a fairly booked week.

I've also elongated my writing process by pausing to do research I wasn't expecting I needed to do. Like transcribe a couple of scenes - only to find them on Tumblr the next day as subtitled gif sets.... - measuring the height difference between Adrien and Kagami, timing out where everyone is and when throughout the episode, analyzing the location of the bathroom on the animated train car shown in the episode, timing the length of a train ride from Paris to London, figuring out the logistics of a hand-written prescription, and designing wedding formal wear. That last one was probably the trickiest for me.

Once upon the time, roughly between the ages of 6 and 10, before I truly understood my passion for writing, I fancied myself a fashion designer. I loved using different design kits to create new clothing styles. I had about four different kits that I would rotate through. I'd also cut out bits and pieces from old magazines in order to paste together an outfit. While I loved just about everything I designed, I was apparently the only one who believed I had an eye for fashion. It didn't stop me, though. What finally did was the realization that I had to sew my own prototypes, and I was NOT into that. Me and sewing are not good friends....

Well, along with my desire to design, my eye for design also kind of died. Although, as I noted, most would argue I had no "eye for design" to begin with. As an adult I might be inclined to agree.....

Anyway, my point is, whenever I end up designing an outfit for an original character, or create a new look for an existing character, such as when I designed Adrien's Chat Noir Appreciation Festival look for PT, I tend to spend hours looking up fashion photos to see what pops out at me.

Not only do I have to try to piece together an outfit I think looks good, but I have to compare it to the design of the characters to see if it would work on them; if it's a style they'd wear. Finally, I have to figure out how to DESCRIBE the outfit so you, the reader, can understand what it looks like without the help of an actual visual reference.

I'm beginning to hate describing clothing as much as I hate coming up with names and writing repetitive action scenes such as fight scenes, chase scenes, and.... shall we say "sexually themed" scenes. I hope it's all worth it, though, and that someone is just as inspired by my fashion designing for this one-off as they were with that festival scene in PT.

I still need to finish THAT story though. This is definitely going to be my February "one new story a month" goal, but that requires me to finish WITHIN FEBRUARY. So I should probably get back to that story so I can share it with you guys by next Tuesday.

AAAAAAAND this blog post is stupid-long, and HOURS late. So... Catch you guys next week.

And Still More Snow...

What is it with Tuesdays and snow lately???? It always seems to hit on a Tuesday or Sunday this winter. At least, the bad snow storms. This is the second time the writer's group meeting is cancelled due to winter weather advisory. Which is such a bummer, because I also missed the first ever meeting of the year due to work. It's depressing to know I've only been able to attend one meeting since 2019 started.

Stupid snow.

Also, interesting factoid: my unexplained preference for British spellings and vernacular continues with, oddly enough, the past tense version of 'cancel'. Yup, above you may have noticed that I spelled it as 'cancelled', which may have looked odd to most of you. There are times where I'll write the word with only one 'l', usually because I'm typing too fast, but there won't be a spell-check squiggle under it. So I looked it up, and both versions - one 'l' and two - are correct. Americans, thanks to the Webster's Dictionary spellings, tend to spell the word 'canceled' while Brits lean more on the 'cancelled' side of the fence. Personally, I think the word looks more "complete" with the second 'l', which is why I tend to default to that spelling. Regardless, it's just another word where I favor the British version, and I'm not entirely sure why I bounce between the two versions of English: British vs American.

It must drive readers crazy trying to figure out what side of The Pond I hail from....

Anyway, even without the prospect of a writer's group meeting, I'm trying to push through my completion of "One and the Same." I'm still struggling with that darn final chapter though. I think I have Marinette calmed down, Adrien relieved, everything that needs to be said at least planned out, and the makings of a satisfying ending.

However, I keep thinking of more things.....

One of them is a fairly crucial question Marinette asks Adrien, and, frankly? I didn't know the answer. I THOUGHT I did, but I couldn't remember the nitty-gritty details of "Peeping Tomcat" enough to be positive. So I spent the past couple of days reading/skimming through PT to make sure I have my continuity all in order. Thankfully, I didn't paint myself into a wall with PT, so I just have to make sure I avoid plot holes and/or contradictory scenes/statements throughout OatS.

It's been a bit exhausting to go back through my story instead of working on my new one, but at the same time, I find myself lost in my own writing during my re-read, causing me to read more than I needed to.

I'm loving how much I'm still enjoying my own story. Yay! Go me!

Speaking of enjoying my work, this past week I received a pleasantly surprising review on “Woven Heartstrings”:
Wildfire's Flame: I really enjoyed this story and don't know that I would have found it if not for Taurus Pixies blog. I enjoyed the story immensely. I love reading things with warmth and caring and sweet gooieness. Makes me warm and fuzzy inside. The worry dolls were great but I loved the crocheting and the part where Adriens dad was actually a dad for once in his life. Thank you for a truly beautiful and thought out story. It's a great gift for your friend and to all of us that love the show.
First of all, this is just such a lovely review. I loved that Wildfire's Flame enjoyed my writing so much. Secondly, it's awesome to know that Wildfire found my story via the amazing Taurus Pixie's blog. She frequently promotes and/or reviews my stories on her blog, and the fact that she's apparently bringing me more traffic is awesome! Pixie, you are a beautiful human being!

The rub, though, is that Wildfire's Flame has private messaging deactivated on Fanfiction.net. I can't reply to them to thank them for the review, or even for just reading my story. I have no way of them seeing how much I appreciate that they took some of their time and spent it with my work.

The kicker is that Wildfire is slowly making their way through my other writing, and leaving reviews there as well. Here's what they had to say about “Peeping Tomcat”:
Wildfire's Flame: Wow. Just wow. I have been slowly reading this over the past couple days. I loved it. Poor Adrien. I loved your akumas and I loved the way the characters all were. The battle scenes were well thought out and the festival was a great idea. Thank you for a wonderful story. I loved it.
Well, thank you, Wildfire, for your wonderful reviews. I love those as well!

Finally, here's their review of “Build Your Own Luck”:
Wildfire's Flame: So sweet. I loved it. Very nicely done and I can picture a 5 year old doing just that. Thank you for this brief moment in time.
GAAAAAH! Wildfire! Who are you!? Why won't you let me thank you for taking the time to read and review my works!?!?!

Wildfire's Flame, if you are reading this, know that your reviews are so appreciated. You are not shouting into the void. And thank you for letting me know I'm not doing the same. You, dear reader, are awesome sauce, and you are very welcome for the stories I put out for your consumption.

Also, one last shout-out to Pixie for leading Wildfire my way in the first place. Thank you so much for taking the time to promote my work on your blog! Also also, if any of my readers like some Miraculous Ladybug fanfiction with some Lukanette goodness and/or jealous Chat Noir, you HAVE to check out Pixie's latest fic Chat Vert. Her Luka is perfectly true-to-show, and her other depictions of the characters are so in-character I could hear their voices during all the dialogue. There's a nice balance of angst and fluff and goofiness. Just.... go! Read it!

Finally, if you want to know more about Pixie's writing schedule for her four WIPs, or her thoughts on Miraculous Ladybug - via episode reviews and mini-essays - you should head on over to her blog. Again, the link is here.

And since I'm talking about reading anyway, I might as well note that I've FINALLY started really reading "Armada." I'm only about 3 or 4 chapters in, so I still have most of the book to read this month. It's an interesting concept, but so far the story isn't really pulling me in like "Ready Player One" did. The whole story seems to be built around a conspiracy theory that was supposed to sound crazy at first, but presumably will be 100% true. So, said theory needs to be first established. Alright, but I kind of know that everything is going to be true, so the "mysterious" build up just seems to drag on. I dunno. Ernest Cline did a better job at world building - literally, since there were different "worlds" you could go to in The OASIS - for his first book.

As of right now? Only a few chapters into "Armada"? It just feels like a rehash of "Ender's Game". The book even notes that as one of the center-points of the conspiracy: the first time Sci-Fi depicted children playing video games to train as soldiers, specifically for a war against aliens. Everything is focused on that concept: playing war-themed video games where aliens are the enemy, and how said games might be disguised training of the unknowing soldiers. A way to recruit the best of the best based on high ranking scores....

I like the concept. I just hope Cline picks up the pacing a bit. Especially since we aren't given much by way of character development for anyone, so I'm not particularly attached to any of them. Not even the main character. Not yet, anyway.

I just hope I can do better with "One and the Same." I don't want it to be like "Ready Player One" and "Armada." Granted, Cline's stories are separate entities - although they feel REALLY similar; same themes and everything thus far - but RPO was engaging from the first few pages, and I instantly fell in love with Wade, Aech, and Art3mis. Meanwhile, "Armada" seems to meander, and I'm not invested in any of the characters. I couldn't even tell you the difference between the main character Zack's two best friends Cruz and Diehl. They're just always a unit; even given the same first name: Michael. I can't even remember who voted for Mjolner vs Sting in their debate about best fantasy weapon.

I'm struggling with OatS, whereas PT felt like it flowed through me. It was a story that grabbed hold and wouldn't let me go. Whereas OatS has scenes that I'm itching for the world to read, but the over-all story just doesn't seem to want to form. I'm trying. I really am, but I fear that it's going to be like "Armada": a lack-luster second story from an author who had a promising first novel. Granted, for me the "first novel" is a free-to-read, published-online fanfic. But still....

I just need to study "Armada" and note the pitfalls Cline tripped into, and try to avoid doing the same thing for OatS. Hopefully that, plus some careful planning and decent editing, will help me keep OatS as intriguing as PT was.

I can also take what went wrong with "Armada", add in the critiques I had for "Ready Player One" - such as the obvious Plot Armor on Wade - and learn what to avoid when I'm writing my own original works. Whenever THAT will be....

I also need to remind myself that, while I should strive to write the best I can for my faithful readers, I AM still writing free-to-read, website-published fanfiction. No one is expecting it to be professional quality. It is always a pleasant surprise to find fanfiction that is so finely polished, but no one is EXPECTING it.

I can experiment with fanfiction. I can grow with fanfiction. I can get reader feedback as I'm posting my chapters in order to know where I'm going wrong and what I'm doing right. I can practice, fail, and recover within fanfiction.

I need to take some pressure off. But not TOO much pressure... otherwise I may never finish writing this sequel. Speaking of, I should get back to working on that ending so I know where I'm headed for the rest of the story....

Stay warm out there!
