Come Check Out These Fics!

I ran out of time last week - in ALL THREE POSTS - to talk about the fanfics I really enjoyed reading this month. Since most of last week was also spent working on all of those blog posts, I didn't really do much else.

So, welcome to a special Story Recommendations blog post this week!
Generated by Bitmoji
As I mentioned in my previous posts last week, I tried to avoid reading other Fluff Week stories at first, afraid they would influence my own story. Plus, I felt like the time I was spending reading could have been better spent writing. I did, however, go back after posting my 'Concert' prompt story, and read what others came up with for the same prompt.

If you read those posts from last week, you already know that a majority of the stories I came across had very similar premises to mine: sad Adrien plays at his piano, Marinette/Ladybug stumbles upon his performance, he plays for her, they end up snuggling on the piano bench.

There was one story in particular though, that really got to me when I read their version of that premise. For their 'Concert' prompt, LittleLottieWrites added a great opening spark to potential Adrienette. The story is told through Marinette's point of view, but switches slightly in the closing line, and it is beautiful! It enticed me enough that I subscribed to their story, and I'm so glad I did.

The story is put together very much like mine: a series of one-shots that tell an over-arcing story of these two idiots finally figuring out their love for each other as the Love Square collapses into a happy couple. The progression Lottie has is fantastic. Like I said, right from the get-go, there's a hint that maybe Adrien IS seeing Marinette as more than just a simple friend, and the other chapters say the same about Marinette and Chat Noir.

The second story prompt 'Trust' uses an akuma attack as an awesome way of bringing in some glorious Ladrien content. Then Lottie has the 'Flowers' prompt showcase some sweet and playful MariChat along with a little Adrienette. The best part for me though is how it wonderfully shows off how Extra Adrien likes to be, both in and out of his superhero persona. The 'Your Voice' prompt went in the direction of Ladrien again, but with hints of Adrienette. Also, I'm a sucker for the trope "the characters unknowingly say praising things about each other's secret identity to them" so that was a nice added bonus.

As one would expect with the prompt 'Comfort', that chapter/story got a touch angsty. Ladybug is lamenting that it's been a year since getting their Miraculous, and they're no closer to stopping Hawkmoth. It's a really sweet LadyNoir bonding chapter/story. The last line is a bit of a gut-punch for Chat Noir, but that just makes the chapter all the better.

The AU chapter was fantastic! Lottie tried out the Enemies AU concept as a sort of pilot for a potential full-story. There was something about this concept/chapter/story that really spoke to me. The only word I could think to use in my chapter review as 'visceral'. You could just FEEL the excitement and anxiety the characters had. You could see Chat Noir slinking around like a cat on the prowl. My own heart began to race as Chat Noir's crush on Ladybug came into play. It was just so well done, and I'm excited to see where Lottie is going to take this favored AU trope in the fandom.

Getting back on track with their main story, Lottie finishes Fluff Week with a reveal inspired by the anime Sailor Moon. The second I saw the words 'reveal' and 'Sailor Moon' I instantly started bouncing around in my chair squeeing "Elevator scene! Elevator scene!" because I'm THAT dork. If you know Sailor Moon, you more-or-less know exactly where Lottie went with this story/chapter. If you don't, I won't ruin it for you. Go check it out.

My only qualm with this final chapter is I feel like Lottie leaned a touch TOO far into the Sailor Moon inspiration, so the characters seem a bit.... off. Otherwise, it's a very lovely piece, and I greatly enjoyed the full story. It was quite the ride!

The next story I first read while going through the other 'Concert' prompt pieces. I didn't truly start paying attention to it after seeing their take on the prompt 'Trust,' however. That second chapter really grabbed me and wouldn't let go.

Chasing Feelings by CoffeeComicsGalore
a 13,693 word story

I want to clarify that I have nothing against their 'Concert' prompt chapter. It was a lovely bit of MariChat where they go to a Jagged Stone concert together. It is sweet, and I enjoyed it. I was planning on keeping an eye out for Coffee via the Love Square Fluff Week Tumblr event page. However, after reading their 'Trust' prompt chapter, and realizing how easy it was going to be for me to lose track of them on the event page, I knew I needed to just subscribe to the story.

At first, Coffee didn't do anything terribly different compared to a lot of other writers for the 'Trust' prompt: they wrote about a trust fall. However, the energy poured into the chapter caught me, and what made me hit that subscribe button was what happened after the trust fall. Ladybug and Chat Noir were having fun. They were screwing around. They got to be TEENS, instead of just superheroes. Sure, they could do that in their civilian forms as well, but they have more FREEDOM in their superhero personas, and no matter how responsible Marinette is, she's still a 14yo kid, and it's just too tempting to just be FREE for her to not succumb to that feeling every once in a while. So it was fantastic to see them just innocently play.

Chapter 3 and the prompt 'Flowers' is when the romance truly kicked off. Chat Noir had started up a tradition to help destress and cheer up Ladybug, but Ladybug nearly catches Adrien prepping for the tradition. He recovers, and there's glorious mutual-blushing Ladrien content, before he gifts something to Ladybug. There's also underlying hints towards Adrienette that are lovely. This chapter starts the Love Square slowly caving in on itself.

For 'Your Voice', Coffee does a sort of reverse of what a lot of people did for 'Concert'. Adrien is the one who stumbles upon Marinette creating music: she's singing. He's entranced by the sound of her voice and you can tell that this chapter is when Adrien finally realizes his feelings for Marinette. It's so sweet, and watching ADRIEN be the one flustered around MARINETTE is fantastic.

Of course there's confusion and miscommunication between these two idiots, so the 'Comfort' chapter get's a touch angsty. Adrien freaks out about potentially loving Marinette, and what that could mean for his "love" for Ladybug. Meanwhile, Marinette cries on Chat Noir's shoulder about how she'll never get to be with the boy she loves.

For 'AU Day', an akuma attacks and transforms Paris into various Disney fairy tale stories and characters. It's basically Kingdom Hearts in akuma form. Adrien is Disney's version of Rapunzel, and Marinette/Ladybug is Mulan. There's some Ladrien, some Jealous-Ladybug LadyNoir action, and official Adrienette.

The story concludes with Adrien and Marinette being the PERFECT dorks as they prank their classmates, but this leads to one of the most randomly great reveals I've read. It's so stupid that it's pretty much perfect!

It's a fun ride.

As much as I enjoyed those other two stories, I have to admit my absolute favorite Fluff Week story had to be the Aged Up story told by a pair of fantastic writers.

Two Hundred Seventeen Days by mostlovedgirl and zenmisery
a 42,164 word novella
Plagg is so done. He has been watching his and Tikki’s chosens drift apart ever since they graduated from that lycée place last summer. Maybe all they need is a nudge in the right direction. Purr-haps he might even convince his Sugarcube to help him.

Marinette is eagerly anticipating the start of Jagged Stone’s concert. She isn’t expecting to run into an old friend who she hasn’t seen for two hundred seventeen days (not that she’s been counting).

Adrien is enjoying his freedom now that he is nineteen and living on his own, but it is a little lonely. He unexpectedly runs into an old friend… and keeps running into her. Why can’t he stop thinking about her?
This story actually has 8 chapters because the duo included a prologue that sets up the whole premise: Plagg convincing Tikki to help him set their holders up so the Love Square shenanigans can end already! Each chapter also ends with Plagg and Tikki recapping the chapter with some new perspective of the events, as well as hints to what they're plotting next for our love birds.

I have to give these two ladies mad props because I think this is indeed the fluffiest Fluff story I've read, while still having plenty of drama to drive the story forward. I spent so much time just squeeing throughout their chapters that I ended up - unintentionally - writing running commentaries for each of my chapter reviews.

But, we're now Tumblr mutuals, so it all worked out. Given how many of MY readers have become friends after going back and forth talking about my stories and theirs, I, of all people, should have known that gushing uncontrollably about someone's work is the easiest way to their heart.

Anyway, as the summary suggests, they started off the official story with the prompt 'Concert' seeing Adrien and Marinette "coincidentally" going alone to the same Jagged Stone concert. That's where they first rekindle their friendship, but there's also WONDERFUL Adrienette moments that felt natural and casual, but were just SOOOOO deliciously fluffy!

Then, for 'Trust', the gang all gathers for a Mylene and Ivan wedding! My original side-ship! I love DJWifi and all, but MyVan was my original jam! That alone hooked me, but the sweet - and slightly jealous - Adrienette moments continued, and suckered me in further.

'Flowers' brought in some OCs that zenmisery created for another of her ML stories, and I have to say this OC crew is fantastic! I loved them all, and they were hilarious in the best way. Also, Adrien's obliviousness knows no bounds, and it's amazing! It's also the true start of Adrien's Chat Noir starting to show up more and more around Marinette, which adds such a great flavor to the mix.

We have a pseudo-official Adrienette in the chapter 'Your Voice' and seeing those two stumble around each other - as well as Alya jumping to wild conclusions - is fantastic. We also FINALLY get to see the LadyNoir dynamic for this aged-up story, and it's really sweet and caring.

The 'Comfort' chapter made me think so much of my husband and how amazing just quiet nights at home could be. Adrien is a prince and the world doesn't deserve him. Marinette is strong and self-reliant, but it was lovely to see her drop her walls enough to allow someone else to care for her. The whole thing was sweet and healed my soul a little.

The take on 'AU Day' for this story was FANTASTIC. I mentioned this in Sunday's post, but mlg and Zen masterfully thought out of the box for their use of that prompt without it disrupting the story they were telling. As a way to avoid unwanted advancements on both Adrien and Marinette, the pair spend the day claiming to be a couple, escalating from long-term dating to engaged to secretly married, depending on the extreme the situation called for. We get a couple more OCs in this chapter. One is supposed to be a sleaze, and was written so well that I actually shuddered whenever he was in the story. The other OC was magnificent and basically the voice of the Fandom. I loved her so much! Also, seeing how easily Adrien and Marinette could convince everyone around them that they were madly in love newlyweds was perfection.

After their rouse, life got a touch more complicated for the duo, especially when the daily prompt of 'Reveal' took effect. Seeing them sort through that, sort through their own feelings, and grow closer was gloriously satisfying. Having them battle with themselves as to what the reveal would - and should - mean for their relationship was JUUUUUUUUST the right sprinkle of angst. Tikki even added an extra level of complication into the mix that was borderline hilarious as Marinette slowly put two-and-two together. Zen even used inspiration from her own love life for the conclusion of the story, and it just works so well. My only qualm is that the actual reveal was a touch handwaved since their relationship was the priority of the story, and the chapter was already running long.

I don't want to spoil anything, but there's also a lot of sexual undertones throughout the story, especially the last two chapters of it. Seeing how much Adrien respects Marinette, and how much she trusts him was beautiful. The decision making on whether or not they were ready for anything, and how that translated to their other physical interactions was just so THEM, and it showcased a side of attraction that is rarely explored anymore.

All-in-all, I just ADORED this story. I'm glad to see that it's starting to pick up steam and recommendations, because it was far too undervalued when I first started reading it. I'm also amazed at the fact that it's two writers tag-teaming chapters, and yet it feels like a cohesive, solitary story, without many writing-voice changes that might throw readers off. If I didn't know better, I could be convinced the whole thing was written by just one author, which is a feat in and of itself. They were so in sync with each other. A great duo. Just, super well done. This was also the only story out of the three that actually included Valentine's Day within the story, having Plagg and Tikki race to try to get Adrienette as an official couple before Valentine's Day ended.

Also-also... Seeing Plagg soft and protective of Adrien makes my heart soar. He's my favorite character for a reason, and both mlg and Zen treated him right.

I still have to go back through the Fluff Week event page to find other stories to consume, and I have to go through the other Lovebugs and Snake Charmers event stories as well. For now, though? Those are the three that really stuck with me for Fluff Week.

How about OUTSIDE of Valentine's Day stories, though?

Well, I have two more treats for you fine folks! I haven't had time to comment about them here yet this month, but earlier both Immortal Bonds and Discordant Sonata updated.

Immortal Bonds by Taurus Pixie
a 5,233 word on-going story
Accidentally selling her soul to the demon prince Chat Noir wasn't the smartest thing Marinette could have done. But it's not long before Marinette begins to realize there's more to Chat Noir, and the demonic world she's now found herself in, than meets the eye.

AU. *New Version*
In Pixie's newer version of Immortal Bonds, the second chapter she recently posted sets up the truly eerie feeling of the overall story. The new prologue had Marinette trapped in some sort of ethereal plain; a limbo somewhere; a waiting room for spirits, or something to that affect. Already creepy, right? Well, the new first chapter doesn't just start with Marinette at a slumber party messing with a Ouiji board. Now we get to see a bit of her normal day-to-day before things really hit the fan with that whole "selling her soul to the demon prince" thing.

We also meet Master Fu, who is just as mysterious as he was in the show, but this time he has an added level of creepy. Is he potentially scouting out for Chat Noir? Is he planning on sacrificing Marinette to the Demon Prince? Is he a demon in disguise? Will he be her savoir with taming Chat Noir once Marinette is tied to him? Whatever is going on, it's clear that Fu is certainly more than a frail old man Marinette simply saved one day. He'll be part of her life again, for sure.

The chapter is a lovely mix of Classic Miraculous Ladybug but with hints of something darker laying underneath in this AU.

The story is fairly short still as of right now, so it's the perfect time to jump on board. Just be warned, Pixie's year has NOT gone smoothly thus far, so please be patient with her updating schedule. She has a LOT going on. You can keep up with her and her updating via her blog: Taurus Pixie: Pixie's Chronicle.

The other story I follow is also an AU where Ladybug and Chat Noir aren't necessarily on the same side; at least, not at first.

Discordant Sonata by EdenDaphne
a 75,153 word on-going story
“Ladybug… I… What choice do I have? Hawkmoth, he’s ruthless and determined. And he’s… he’s not just my boss. He’s family. If I defied him, what would I do? Where would I go? He’d take my miraculous away if I even tried. I don’t have a choice.”

Enemies AU where Chat has always worked with Hawkmoth from the very beginning.
This Enemies AU is unique because it's clear from the onset that Chat Noir doesn't want to fight Ladybug. He'd gladly fight as her partner if he had the freedom to do so. It has it's fluffy moments, sure, but it's mostly a heartbreaking, angsty story with underlying hope that pushes both the characters and the reader forward.

I won't really talk much about the chapters updated this past month, because it will spoil it for anyone new to the story. However, I will comment on the fact that Eden did update earlier this month, left us hanging on quite the cliffhanger, and then mercifully concluded that tension in another chapter a week later. It was an exciting akuma battle, and Eden included a Chat Noir power that was thought of during the concept phases, but never translated into the show. I hope eventually Chat Noir powers up enough to use it, though, because it's an awesome power, especially the way Eden described its use. The power was dubbed "Black Hole" in the concept art.
ML PV Concept Art of Chat Noir's power Black Hole
Along with Eden's lovely writing, Discordant Sonata is unique in that each chapter is named after a different musical concept; each one setting up the theme of that chapter. Eden also includes mood music for the various scenes within every chapter. The music is not needed for the reader to enjoy the story she's telling, but, much like her illustrations in past fanfic collabs, Eden's mood music choices certainly elevate the emotions of the scene(s) the music is picked out for.

Eden is still relatively new to the fanfiction writing game, and yet this story is just so fantastically crafted to just YANK at those heartstrings. Also, the characters are aged up, so there's a bit more at stake. Chat Noir has been an enemy of Paris for YEARS in this Enemy AU. Ladybug has been battling solo for YEARS in an epic 1-v-2 battle... 1-v-3 if you count Hawkmoth and the akumatized supervillain as separate. Trying to turn Chat Noir against Hawkmoth in order to fight alongside Ladybug is MUCH more complicated than in a lot of Enemy AU fics. Plus, with the characters being older, there's always that hint of more sexual tension than there would be if they were still only 14. They're still innocent little beans though, so nothing ever really goes farther than that hot-hot tension.

I know that Discordant Sonata is a bit of a read by now, but I promise you it is worth it.

Also, added bonus for a lot of the stories I shared today: Immortal Bonds and Discordant Sonata are AU stories, and Two Hundred Seventeen Days is an aged up story. In all three cases, you only really need to know the vaguest information about the show to understand the story. Things that you probably learned just from me rambling about the show here. So, if you aren't in the fandom, you're in luck! You can still check out these glorious bits of work! I'm sure the authors would get a kick out of someone outside the fandom leaving them a like/kudos and comment.

Speaking of not being in the fandom but still enjoying something, there is also a non-ML story I've been reading.

Displaced by Time by Cyhyr
a 14,713 word on-going story
Vesper Scienta wanted nothing more out of life than to make sure her charge and best friend, Prince Aster Amicitia, was happy. She would follow him, always, and keep him safe, as her appointment as Shield dictates she must. She was happy. They were happy.

Then they found the Messengers.

Now she's flitting through time itself, racing against the weakening pulse of the Crystal. It's been almost nineteen years since the Dawn Returned, and the world needs saving again. Vesper just doesn't understand why it has to be her, or why the Messengers separated her and Aster, or why they paired her with the daughter of the Marshal and the son of the King of Light - both from different times.

Time's running out. The star will burn. Raise the dawn, become the night, restore the Crystal.

Vesper just wants to be with Aster again.
A lot of people seem to be avoiding or otherwise ignoring this story because the main characters are all OCs created by Cy, which is totally unfair! As unfair as Peeping Tomcat being avoided because it's written in first person. I get that 90% of fic writers get OCs and 1st person horribly wrong, but what about those of us that actually do it quite well?

Cy is one of those people that does OCs well. I'm invested in them. They are each unique in their personalities, and they're all flawed. They're diverse enough that I can usually tell who is speaking even before I get to the tag or action. I'm rooting for Vesper, and I'm greatly enjoying Eleos. Voti I'm still warming up to, but he has potential. Aster we didn't know for too long, but I liked him - and his relationship with Vesper - enough that I'm hoping the two are reunited.

The use of OCs allows Cy to really tell HER story within the world of Final Fantasy XV. A parallel story that takes place alongside the game, and silently influences it; much like the Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars episode. That kind of leeway also means she can slowly bring people into that world who never played the games. Each of the characters are from different times and from different realities. As Cy introduces the world that each character came from and how they differ from each other, she's simultaneously introducing the reader to the world and to canon character dynamics in a way that doesn't require prior knowledge. I mean, sure, prior knowledge would help, and would allow you to catch Easter Eggs within her story, just as it would for all fanfiction, but that knowledge isn't REQUIRED.

My only caveat is that the story, since it's dealing with a knotted up time stream and visions from and of divine beings, does get a little confusing to keep track of. That's done intentionally so that you can become as disoriented as Vesper, and so you can try to sort things out alongside her. The mystery of what is going on and how to fix it, as well as the concern of what parts of history should the characters mess with, and which ones will only make things worse in the future, really pulls you in.

I am not remotely in the Final Fantasy fandom. I've only ever played the first two on my Nintendo DS, and I gave up about half-way through the second one. I own FF VII: Advent Children and more-or-less know the story of Cloud and Crew from the 7th game, but that maxes out my knowledge of the franchise.

I'm still adoring this story, and it's truly getting criminally small amounts of attention, so please give Cy some love as well.

Okay, time to tag out my story recommendations, and tag in some more info about my own writing.

After a solid week of working on blog posts trying to recap my weeks, talking about the research I put into my Lukanette story, and how I was inspired for my various Fluff Week stories, I FINALLY stopped using this blog as a means to procrastinate.

I started working on my 'AU Day' prompt story yesterday. I got myself a bit worn out throughout the day - still not feeling 100%, I'm actually feeling a bit sleepy right now - so I didn't get as far as I would have liked in the story. It IS getting written though. I don't know if I'll be able to complete it and my other two prompt stories before the end of the month, though.

I have my normal "day off; time to run errands" day today, and I have writing group, so I'm not sure how much more free time I have to work on my writing tonight. Tomorrow I work, then zumba, then the lone night I actually watch TV. I watch The Masked Singer, followed by Lego Masters; just the second half of LM if I didn't get a chance to shower before TMS. I then close out the evening with The Magicians.

Thursday would normally be D&D night, so I wouldn't really have any outside-of-work writing time regardless, but we're actually cancelling D&D AGAIN so that a group of us can go see the My Hero Academia movie. That will probably be a late night.

I DO have Friday off, so maybe I'll crank out the last of my stories then. My apartment DOES need a freshening up as well though, so trying to split my time will be tricky, especially if Hubby wants to hang out too. We'll see how I end up prioritizing.

As of right now, though, I'm about 1600 words into my 'AU Day' prompt story, and I pretty much JUST got to the inciting incident after setting up the world of the story/chapter. I'm not sure I want to know how massive this project is going to be.

I should probably get back to it though, huh?

Well, tomorrow is Ash Wednesday within the Christian community, which means today is Donut Day! Or 'Fat Tuesday' or 'Paczki Day' or 'Fasnacht Day'... depending on where on the East Coast you are, I guess. It's also Marti Gras! So break out that vibrant purple, gold, and green!

Me? I'm sticking with Donut Day. Take the day to indulge. With the way the winter and 2020 has been shaping up, you've probably earned a "cheat day".

I went back to my spring-like Bitmoji clothes there because it's been gorgeous this week! Anyway, I guess I'll catch you all next Tuesday. Have fun, everyone, and let me know if you also enjoyed any of those stories, or if there's others I NEED to read.

Last Tuesday, I ended up reading Love Taps at writing group. The most agreed upon comment? I could re-name the characters with Western names, ditch the reference to The Zodiacs, and the story could stand on its own as original content. Much like with I Don't Care, I feel like my "mostly original takes on what-ifs of these characters' lives" could very well be original content. The trick, however, is that I doubt I could really go anywhere with such a single short story, and since I won't really be able to picture these characters as anything other than their canon concepts, I fear I wouldn't be able to expand upon these stories as legitimately original works.

Point is, I feel like my group is really trying to push me to write something original already. I appreciate the confidence in my writing. I just- I dunno. I have the vaguest of concepts for Glitches and some sort of Gyateara-based fantasy story. I just don't have any actual plot ideas, and my story about Jolene's past is long and meandering and more for me. I honestly don't expect that to ever be picked up by a publisher.

Would I like to write something original? Heck yeah! I'd LOVE to have an original idea that grips me. One like a pre-historical fantasy about what life was like during the construction of the Tower of Babel, or a pre-9/11 tale about a CIA agent who has to protect his great-grandmother from South American assassins seeking revenge for her involvement in WWII, or a standard fantasy about a snarky teen whisked away from his home and must find a way back while realizing he has magical powers because he's secretly a member of a long-thought-lost race. Or, a story about a "family" of clones trying to live a normal life while the scientist that created them tries to track them down to either exterminate or further experiment on them. Or a low-fantasy story about a foreign bodyguard battling with her harsh past while protecting her refugee princess who is trying to survive a coup against her family, or another fantasy story about an exiled member of a secret angelic race as she tries to survive as a simple mortal long enough to get back home and force her way back into the society. Or maybe a story about a man fighting against reality itself as his Dementia worsens, his only comfort is the small collection of fellow nursing home residents that sort of strong-arm a friendship with him. Or even an anthology of short stories about a silent-movie star who is secretly immortal.

Don't they all sound amazing? They are each so unique. I- I got nothing. I may come up with compelling stories with original plot ideas, but they are all based on pre-established worlds and characters. Without those? Without my saying "What if?" while looking at the world or the characters? I have nothing.

At best, I'm a really good parrot. Always have been. My drawings were doctored copies of other images I saw. My stories are fanfiction. My original content is derived from fanfiction. Gyateara originated from a combination of the world of D&D and the video games Fable and Legend of Zelda. Glitches is a re-masked X-Men story.

I am an imitator. I don't know why, but I am completely unable to start from zero. I ALWAYS, in all forms of artwork - yes, crocheting things included - have to find a base, and then manipulate it for my own purposes. When I first started writing, I tried to mimic my writing voice off of that of Stephen King's.

True, in the end, I do adjust and adapt until I have something unique. Yes, all artists have to LEARN by mimicking others' work until it evolved into their own original style. I get that. I do. However, while I feel like I HAVE found my writing voice, I don't know if I've evolved enough to come up with an original "off the top of my head" story.

I'm not able to see a black-and-white painting of a mysterious man in the woods in winter, his back covered in arrows as the man stumbles through the snow, and think "fantasy story about a teenager who is secretly a member of a lost race of magic users."

I can't see the limited information that archaeologists have on the ancient civilizations around the time of the Tower of Babel, and think "what if they were telepathic, and telekinetic, and were able to travel via 'flying' rugs - flying because of the limited telekinetic powers?"

In a more mainstream sense, I can't look at Greek, Egyptian, and Norse mythology and think "what if the gods in these myths were real, and still had demigod children/avatars in modern society?" Or wonder about a teen who became a mob-boss within the world of the Fae. Or imagine a new take on the Battle Royale with Children concept to create a new YA distopia story.

My wheelhouse is fanfiction. I thrive on building off of stories left by the original authors; angles and potential the author might not see. Heck, I wanted to write a whole anthology of stories off of the character Lincoln from our X-Future RPG. That was one of the main reasons I was so emotionally distraught by the player killing him off. I loved the character, sure, and I saw it was the beginning of the end of playing with that guy, who was such a masterful wordsmith. However, the biggest gut-punch to me was when he said he was bored with Lincoln, because I had see soooooo many different story routes and potential that he didn't.

I don't need true AUs where one of the villains is actually a hero, or one of the heroes started off as a villain, or everyone works at a coffee house, or a magical show is retold as if it weren't magical, or a non-magical story is told in a fantasy setting, etc. I just need the SLIGHTEST divergence from the source material. I need to explore the "what if Character A did option B instead?" and create split timelines. I need big gaps in time, leaving me to wonder "Yeah, but what happened between Scene C and Scene D?" I need moderately vague endings that tie up enough loose ends to be satisfying, but still open for enough interpretation for me to wonder "what happened next?" Or mysterious character or world-build backgrounds that give enough information for a foundation to be constructed, but the rest is completely unknown.

I thrive there.

So, while I do very much appreciate the faith in my writing, and the encouragement to write something original so I can be published in an effort to make a profit - as much as I would LOVE to be paid for my writing - I truly don't foresee that happening in the near future. Not unless I can find a way to market my fanfiction. Not unless I can find a way to become part of the writing team for my fandoms.

And, considering my main fandom is produced in France and I don't know French, and my other main fandom right now is an already completed Japanese comic - a manga series - that is being re-adapted - quite faithfully - into an anime, I highly doubt the "become a writer for the fandom" is very plausible.
Generated by Bitmoji
Wow, that got mildly depressing, didn't it. Sorry. Didn't mean to. I was just trying to point out that, regardless of talent, perhaps some writers just aren't meant to write original content. Maybe I'll look at the world some day, and it will spark an original "OH! What if...?" buuuuuut, I doubt it will be any good if I try to force it.

Instead, I'll focus on the more minor milestones, such as the amount of writing I did this past week.

Yep, getting back on track here.

So, Wednesday I woke up, and I realized that Friday was not only a full moon, but also the 13th. We haven't had a Friday the 13th in about a year, I think? And I felt it deserved to be celebrated, as it were. A full moon on a Friday the 13th? I mean, come on. I think I saw somewhere it was the last time a full moon would fall on a Friday the 13th in like 30 years? I don't know how much I trust internet facts, but if it is true, all the more reason this past one was special.

I knew I'd be able to break out my Friday the 13th Facebook banner I did up quick last Friday the 13th.

I could also use my "matching" profile picture from my original fanfic fandom: Hey, Arnold!
Screen shot from the incredibly appropriate
Hey, Arnold! episode "Friday the 13th"
That wasn't enough though to mark how special this date was. I wanted to write a story. I wanted to write a story centered around my favorite black cats. Originally, that was going to be a Chat Noir-centric story, but I couldn't think of anything to really focus on him.

I could go the usual MariChat route, but that would focus more on their relationship than on him specifically, same with a LadyNoir story. Then I thought I could write a story where he's actually the hero in an akuma attack. Sure, Ladybug still has to be okay enough to use her Lucky Charm, and capture/purify the akuma, but it was Chat Noir who actually took the villain down; much like how LB has taken the villain down by herself countless times.

That required me thinking of an akuma though. So... NOPE!

As I spent most of Wednesday morning brainstorming Chat Noir stories, knowing that I had less than three days to write the thing, I suddenly was struck with "Why does it have to be Chat Noir?" You know who else is a black cat for this thematic story? How about the kwami that powers up the superhero?
Plagg from Miraculous Ladybug
It is very rare for a story to be told completely from the perspective of one of the kwamis. Also, Plagg is one of my favorite characters from the show. On top of that, my attempt to come up with a second chapter for Painfully Close in order to tell Plagg's POV of the "Puppeteer 2" episode was a complete fail that went nowhere. My favorite cheeky black kitty needed some more love from me. And I knew exactly what I needed to do for Friday.

I announced it as "Plagg Appreciation Day" and spent the second half of Wednesday, part of Thursday, and the morning of Friday writing and editing a one-shot told from Plagg's perspective.

"Breaking Monotony"

I also attempted to post the full story over on Tumblr, but apparently I hit a word cap I didn't know existed? So I was only able to post a sample there, and then linked to those three other locations.

It's been doing fairly decently for a story that doesn't focus on Marinette and/or Adrien. The stats as of this morning:

  1. It is a happy Plagg Appreciation Day, thanks to you
  2. Another fantastic story!!! I do love the "Day in the Life" idea and can't wait to see that! Happy Plagg day!!!!
  3. This was really cute
😊
  4. This is so freaking cute! I love Plagg! Your take on how the kwamis power the suits is fascinating, and I love it!
The other two reviews are a bit too long to try to keep in my stats box.

Of course, I had a lovely review from Taurus Pixie.

Taurus Pixie: You're a genius for posting this story on Friday 13th! Very apt! When I saw that you had written another more kwami based story, I got super excited! You nailed the last one that you did, and I'm always interested in learning more about them and the way that they view things. Especially Plagg since he's my favourite, lol.
This was so much fun! Watching Plagg's perspective on everything was hilarious, especially whenever Marinette was around. I can totally see this being Plagg's actual thoughts in the show. You kept him so in character, and that just made this story even more amazing, especially since Plagg is always one of the funniest characters. I loved this so much!
      Happy Plagg Appreciation Day!

My final review was, admittedly, a bit awkward to read with all the cat puns threaded throughout, but the over-all intention of the review was sweet, so I'll share that too.

pinksakura271: Furist off the title is great. The summary is fun. Thank you fur thiss one-shot. True it's as Kagami once told Adrien: "You always do what's expected of you." In 'Frozer' when fencing she cutely taunts him "predicable" Adrien/Kagami would be adorable together romantically. I furrey much apurreciate that this is Plagg and hiss Cattastic Kitten centred instead of their female Bug counterparts. (Sweet Smile)
Right on Gorilla, doesn't truly bodyguard Adrien. Definitely more of gentle giant of a babysitter/chauffeur. But downplayed or not any happiness given to Adrien Plagg (and MYSELF) apurreciate and apurrove com-paw-letely. Huh Adrien stating "mix things up, how about no Camembert for the day" of course Plagg would claim hiss Kitten crazy or evil. (Giggles) Adrien not noticing he makes Clumsinette more nervous boo-hoo it's not paw-issble.
DUPAIN-CHENG IS BEING RIDICULOUS ABOUT IT ALL! Plagg's thoughts on hiss Sugarcube always wonderful. I swear those two Bugs don't apurreciate their Cats very much, compared to how the Cats treat them it's seriously infuriating. - She was so close, and yet insanely far. - oh Plagg connected story of both you and your Kitten's love lives... INSUFFERABLE IDIOTIC INSECTS they are! Them eating lunch very sweet, Plagg truly knows Adrien deserves so much better... furom honestly everyone around him.
Always a misconception... Plagg's influence over Adrien isn't so keen. Seriously Tikki shut up, yes their business is serious. - I don't guide my owners the way you do with yours. - Again Tikki SHUT UP! What kind of accusation is that huh?! But unlike your Bug, Plagg's Kitten needs to BREATHE as Cat Noir. Casual purrlease he's endearing, besides Tikki Marinette DOESN'T truly understand Adrien nor Cat Noir so can you talk Tikki?
I love your idealism of Plagg and Adrien coming together to become Cat Noir. It's highly horrible Kitty is Bug's shield willingly. Getting hurt, brainwashed, or filled by an akuma all on her behalf... it's sickening to watch sometimes. Plagg liking Kagami hanging with Adrien is great. Yes it's true she as similar to Nathalie but it's NOT bad at all. Right Marinette needs to mature to see Adrien as just another teenager/friend.

Phew! Did you got through all of that? I want to finish up by giving a shout out to those four reviewers who had short comments. It seems unfair they go unnamed when the longer reviews get those quoted lead-ins. So, big thank you to AO3 readers Hilzabub, MyPandaEatsBroccoli, and my repeat reader MalcomReynolds. And over on FFN, thank you for my faithful reader ChubbyUnicornMama. Love each of my readers and reviewers so much!

Do you need to take a quick break? Run to the bathroom? Refresh your drink? Grab a new snack? Because I'm not done yet!

Yes, I spent three days trying to put together a Black Cat themed story for Friday the 13th. However, that day ALSO brought about a pivotal episode for the Fruits Basket anime.

The infamous True Form episode. When I saw the character Kazuma the previous week, I knew True Form was coming, and boy howdy was I trying to prepare!
Kazuma Sohma in
episode "You Look Well..."

I was NOT prepared enough. I nearly sobbed the whole episode. I was wiping tears a good ten minutes after the episode was over.

Then I watched it again the next day with Omnibladestrike. I wasn't crying this time, but my heart still hurt so much. Knowing the full story really adds extra daggers to the episode. The subtly, the foreshadowing, the allusions to past events we aren't privy to yet. The writing is soooo well done, and the subtle reactions characters have? The slight shift in weight, or the faint glares, or the mild looks of panic? All of them MEAN something. These characters are so much more real because the animators took care to know each character's full story, and animated those subtle reactions. The ones that make second watches - once you know the full story - all the more powerful.

This show is amazing. I love it so much!

Well, I couldn't go two back-to-back days of watching the episode "Let's Go Home" without some Kyo angst leaking into my brain, apparently.

Saturday night, I went to bed, drifting to sleep, with an angsty Kyo story drifting to the surface of my mind. Sunday morning, I remembered nearly all of it. So I went ahead and wrote it up.

Surprisingly, it's actually less than 500 words! I can do that on the rarest of occasions, I guess! To be fair, the "story" is a letter from Kyo to Tohru, so it's going to be short. Also, a LOT of the context comes from knowledge of the show. More importantly, knowledge of the full manga, because a big reveal in the 20th manga - out of a 23 manga series - gives further context for a lot of what Kyo wrote in the letter.

Still. It was written, and it was posted fairly early Sunday.

"Unsent Letter"

Even with a revival of the fandom with the 2019 reboot of the anime, it seems the overall readership is a bit lower than that for the ML fandom. Either that, or I've become a more established ML fanfic writer than I give myself credit for.

Unsent Letter doesn't nearly have the traffic my other stories have, despite it being such a quick read comparatively. Maybe I went too far in the opposite direction, and people are assuming it's not worth reading BECAUSE it's less than 500 words? Or maybe people are still recovering from "Let's Go Home" and can't bother with Kyo angst right now....

Regardless of the reasons for the lower readership, I still love what I did with this bit, and I'm proud I was able to write something I consider complete in less than 500 words. And it's not like the story is completely ignored. I did get some nice reviews at least.

Thank you to my reviewers: inheritanceofgeek, MalcomReynolds, ChibiSunnie, iSpitonFire, and ChubbyUnicornMama. You all rock, and it makes me smile whenever I see your comments.

Now, if ALL of that wasn't quite enough yet, don't worry, I got you covered.

While thinking so much about Plagg and Plagg's perspective of things, I also thought about the fanfic trope of Adrien discovering who Hawk Moth truly is. I personally feel that if that canonically happens, it's the start of the end. There shouldn't be to much storytelling left in the show past that point.

However...

HOW-EVER!

What if it were PLAGG who discovered Hawk Moth's identity? I don't know if it's enough storytelling potential to stretch past a half-season; full-season probably at most. Even so, it is fun to think about.

For my full thoughts on the matter, feel free to check out my Tumblr post about it:

Yet another plot bunny to add to the pile, but if anyone else reads my post and wants to run with it, I strongly encourage you to do so. Please just link me to the story once it's up. I'd love to see what you came up with!

As of this writing, the post has 16 likes and 4 reblogs, so maybe someone out there WILL write a story based on that idea, or draw a comic about it. I'd love to see. I'm EXCITED to see. I WANT TO SEE!

But if it goes nowhere with someone else, perhaps I will conquer it myself.
Old Billy Mays meme I won't let die
I have a "secret project" currently in the works, and a second one I need to further brainstorm for. I'm going to try to push to have at least the one up in time to share it with you fine folks next week. The other... might take a touch longer, and I should have REALLY thought about starting it last month or something. We'll see how it goes.

Plus... ya know... periodically poking away at One and the Same....

Writing is becoming a bit of an All-Or-Nothing sort of thing for me, huh? At least my Muse did indeed wake up! Thanks to anyone and everyone that poked her awake and sent her my way.

Oh goodness! I STILL haven't talked about the stats of I Don't Care!

Well, it's been weeks since I published it, so I no longer have the 24hr or 1st week stats I normally share. I'm sure I could figure out things like faves/kudos and reviews by going back through my emails, but I won't have number of hits and the like. So I'll just go with what I have currently.

  1. This was fantastic! Please, spoil me more!
  2. Whoa! It's stuff like this that makes me want to get a tumblr account. *sigh* great job!
(review of chpt 1)
  3. I love seeing Gabriel as human. A little awkward, but human. (review of chpt 2)
  4. I officially love this! To think that there was once a normal man there, though this explains why he would become hawkmoth (Emilie seems really nice and worth risking Paris for)! Thanks for writing and stay Miraculous!
Real quick, first of all, that first review was commenting on my Author's Note on how I'm "spoiling" everyone by uploading 2 chapters at once. Secondly, the review commenting about the Tumblr account was responding to me stating Chapter 1 was a Tumblr Exclusive one-shot for over a year before I decided to expand on that world and make the multi-chapter fic. Those reviews were by the fabulous MalcomReynolds again, as well as the lovely ChubbyUnicornMama, and yet another repeat-reader Chat-and-ladybug.

As for the three remaining reviews? First up was my long one over on AO3.

lckychrm: aaaaaaaaaaa Ii am so happy that you decided to make this a multi chapter story!! It was a great surprise to log on tumblr and find this!! 😊 I’ve read “A stranger in a white dress” back when you posted it and it was amazing and now you continued it and it is even better!! I loved it so much and it’s hilarious how Gabe and Emilie always meet at a party 😂 and how you inspire yourself for each chapter with a different song!
I can’t wait to see what you’ll have in store for them! I really like your writing!! 💕:’)))

It is so exciting for me to know that I have someone who read my work on Tumblr, loved it, and followed me over onto AO3!

And just this morning I was greeted by two lovely reviews from Taurus Pixie.

First up, her review of Chapter 1: Stranger in a White Dress

Taurus Pixie: Oh my stars! This is such a good idea! I've always been curious as to what exactly Gabriel and Emilie's relationship was like, as well as how they met. Gabriel obviously felt very close to her and was almost obsessively in love with her. This seems like such a plausible way that they could have met! You managed to create such an intense chemistry between them and almost make me view Gabriel in a different light. Until I remembered he was Hawkmoth and is downright abusive towards Adrien.
But that just goes to show how overall amazing your writing is! This could very well be what Emilie's personality is actually like. We certainly know that she was quite fiery and passionate as implied by Gabriel. I think you captured that really well. Anyway, I'm off to read the next chapter! This is so cute and romantic! Excellent work!

And now for her review of Chapter 2: Alone at a Party

Taurus Pixie: I couldn't help but laugh at the wardrobe comment since the characters in the show hardly ever change outfits. Also, I've only just noticed how amazing your cover art is. Maybe I'll have to get some tips off you on how you make them, because they always look fabulous. But anyway, back onto the proper review.
Emilie is so funny, and their interactions are so cute! Once again, I can so totally picture them being like this! There is so much mystery that surrounds them! You are super talented at writing romance, and I only wish that I could write moments as magically as yours. The chemistry between them once again felt so real, and it all feels incredibly realistic. I've said it before and I'll say it again, but your writing always feels so incredibly canon, as if you are an actual writer of the show.
I'd be totally down for a third chapter if that's what you want to do, but there's no rush. This is such a sweet story, and I once again bow down to your amazing talent. Thank you for sharing this idea with us! It's so amazing!

AAAAH! Pixie, you are a sweetheart! Thank you for the encouraging words about how true-to-show I remain. Also, to get back to those two faves on DA, one of the users - paul7067 - actually started following ME after favoriting those chapters. Clearly Paul wants to make sure to not miss any other Gabriel/Emilie action from me. How exciting!

I mean, yeah, in the big scheme of things, this is probably my least-popular ML story, but it IS about humanizing Gabriel Agreste, and most of the fandom would rather throw tomatoes at him than grow sympathy. So, I get it. This particular story won't be most of the fandom's cup of tea. Which means the love I HAVE received just means that much more to me. So, to all of you who have read, favorited, left kudos, bookmarked, and/or followed I Don't Care? Know that I love you lots!

Also, one last shout out to DA user Constance-Truggle, who has added I was Thinking of You, Acting Weird, and Build Your Own Luck to both their generic favorites and their "Miraculous Ladybug and Chat Noir" folder. I love seeing my work getting love on DA.

I'm reaching the home stretch. I promise. I know this particular blog must be quite exhausting to get through. Thank you for following me this far deep down the Rabbit Hole.

I know there was more I wanted to touch upon with regards to my overall readership - I have dozens of emails stockpiled so I have the stats on-hand - but I'm not going to try to shoehorn it in when this blog is so long already. Maybe next time....

I also wanted to comment about the song I've been obsessing over this past weekend, but again, that will be dog-eared for next week, I guess.

So instead I'll finish up with a heads up that the latest chapter of Discordant Sonata by EdenDaphne is live. So, if you're following that story alongside me, be sure to check out Chapter 11: Cambiare.

Also, over the weekend, I stumbled upon a lovely story about Ladybug and Chat Noir whistling to each other. It's such a great concept, especially when they use the whistles in battle and as a way to warn each other that they're near.

You Know How to Whistle, Don't You? by Aikori_Ichijouji

If you prefer, you can also find the story on FFN.

Seriously, it's fairly short and so sweet. Plus, I just love the unique concept.

Okay, it's now past my noon update time, so I need to jet. I wish you all a great week!

Absorbing Stories

This wasn't a very productive week.

And I don't mean it like I did a week or two ago, where it wasn't a productive week, but ironically was at the same time.

I mean this was NOT a productive week for me. This was a VERY chill, I don't feel like thinking, kind of week for me.

It was a week of catching up on reading and on shows. I mean, I guess that's still sort of productive, because I'm absorbing other stories, which is always beneficial for a writer so they can then draw from that pool later on. So there's that. As for my own writing though? Meh...

Early-ish in the week, I realized I wanted to continue "Painfully Close" to also include Plagg's POV on the events of "the cringe episode" Puppeteer 2. However, I also hadn't seen the episode in a little bit at that point, so I figured I'd rewatch the episode. Somehow, that turned into me transcribing the episode so I could use the transcription as a reference while I was at work and couldn't watch the episode.

I don't have the full thing transcribed, since my focus was on what Plagg would witness, but still, Adrien does take up at least a third of the episode. Also, due to the means I was trying to transcribe, and the fact that I was frequently interrupted during my attempt, it did keep me two days - Thursday and Friday - to accomplish this task. I think collectively I spent about 4hrs or so trying to transcribe this episode? I used to be so much better at this. I used to transcribe commercials as part of my job when I worked in production. I'm out of practice. My ears aren't quite as attuned as they once were. I can't hold full sentences in my head anymore; not without my mind paraphrasing them. I have to go a few words at a time, and then re-listen while I re-read my transcription about 4x to make sure I did indeed write what was said, and not what I THOUGHT was said.

It's tedious. So, to all those transcribers out in the world, especially court stenographers who can't ask for things to be repeated, and even fan-transcribers (like I was those two days) who do this simply for the sake of doing it:
Generated by Bitmoji
Lord knows my life would have been easier if someone else had already transcribed the episode. However, I don't know if anyone wants to re-live the cringe enough to actually transcribe it. Perhaps I'll finish my transcription so it can be posted online; save another fan.

Especially since "the cringe" doesn't seem to really hit me; nor does the second-hand embarrassment. In fact, I actually enjoy this episode. It's rage-inducing, sure, and leaves you wondering "what the heck am I even watching right now!?" but those things are oddly fun for me....

Anyway... that was probably the most productive I was all week: those transcriptions.

I THOUGHT, once I went back through the episode continuously, especially while trying to get into Plagg's head the whole time, that I'd be ready to write. On Saturday I tried. I got a couple paragraphs in, but it just didn't feel authentic. I wasn't in Plagg's head for whatever reason. It was less of an episode reaction - like with Tikki - and more of an episode recap. I just wasn't feeling it. So that project is on the backburner, and "Painfully Close" remains a one-shot for now.

Instead, the past two days have had me mentally planning out a sequel to one of my Tumblr Exclusive stories: Stranger in a White Dress

For whatever reason, I already had Gabemilie feels running around my head lately, but it all seemed to form into some semblance of a narrative after hearing an Ed Sheeran song on the radio. Seriously, I need to just listen to this man's albums on repeat whenever I have writers block, because his songs always seem to inspire SOMETHING.

Anyway, the song in question this time is "I Don't Care." It was originally a collab with Justin Bieber - and, honestly, the poppy version with Bieber is actually fun and the video is delightfully kooky - but the version I love more, and the one that inspired me, is the Sheeran-only acoustic.
Aside from the line "And I don't ever wear a suit and tie" I feel this song is VERY much a Gabriel Agreste song. If I had any form of reliable editing equipment, and if there was ANY footage from the show of Gabriel and Emilie together, you KNOW I'd be throwing those scenes together as an AMV for this song.

The best alternative I have is to write it out as a fanfic. Darn.

The basic story idea I have brewing is Emilie meeting up with Gabriel for the second time after their initial meet-cute in "Stranger in a White Dress." Gabriel was dragged outside of his apartment by his roommate who thinks Gabe needs to socialize more. Except the roommate quickly abandons Gabe in order to dance with some cuties. Emilie sees Gabe - who hasn't started wearing his suit and ascot yet; preferring a cable-knit sweater over a button-down shirt - and asks him to dance. They actually have more than a few minutes together, and it's very reminiscent of Disney's Cinderella; either the original animated or the live-action. They finally get to know each other, instead of just succumbing to their initial attraction to each other.

It's the true start of their love story; one with a tragic ending, even if Emilie does get revived.

So, there's that... We'll see if I actually motivate myself to write it.

Ironic that THIS is the week that I'm all sorts of "nope" with my writing, since I was interviewed about being a writer last Tuesday. However, by now you should know what I say about me and Irony...
Who would have thought I'd be
using this graphic so frequently?
Anyway, a local reporter is trying to help promote the local libraries, and specifically the writing groups that meet up at them. He did a video recording of our interview so he can also create a video to post online. For anyone who was willing to go on camera, the reporter brought us into a separate room for a short one-on-one interview while the rest of the group continued their normal reads and commentary.

One of his questions was "why do you write?" Frankly, I wasn't sure how to answer that. I write because I write. Eventually I came up with the answer "I write because I don't know what else to do with these characters talking to me in my head, or the stories I think of that wouldn't be experienced by anyone else if I DIDN'T write them." He seemed intrigued by that answer.

So... yeah... then this week happened....
I tried, but I couldn't find the origin of this quote.
If you know, please tell me in the comments so
I might properly credit them.
Instead of writing, as I mentioned at the top of the blog, I focused on absorbing other stories.

Hubby has been playing the latest game in his favorite franchise: Fire Emblem. The story of "Three Houses" is so heartbreaking as these former classmates and students end up going to war with each other. There's also mysteries to solve. Also also, there is an adorable lead to one of the three houses: Claude.

He's tall, dark, and handsome. He's witty and playful. He's thoughtful and sarcastic. He's seemingly care-free, but also is a great strategist. He also tries to be as unbiased a mediator as possible, knowing the best strategy is to get into the mind of his opponent. That way he can figure out his opponent's end-goal and either defeat them before they can reach it, or find a way to peacefully help them reach it in order to spare lives.

I would have been sorely disappointed if Hubby had started off with any house other than Claude's Golden Deer, because I would cry if I had to watch him battle against Claude. I probably will have to ignore any future re-plays Hubby does.

Another character from Golden Deer I would have been sore to watch Hubby battle against? This friggen human puppy:
Raphael is the Gentle Giant type. A bit simple-minded, and focuses mostly on 3 things: 1) food; any and all, 2) his little sister and her protection, and 3) being as strong as possible in order to help protect his sister. We find out in one of the support cut-scenes that Raphael knows his sister is smarter than him, and wants her to have the best life she can, so he sends her his textbooks and the study notes people gift to him. That way she gets the education he's at the monastery for. He knows he won't quite understand most of it, but she seems to be picking up on it fairly easily. He's just too adorable, and reminds me of the X-Future character Hubby came up with years ago: Zeke "Warbash" Barclay.

There's actually a whole slew of characters in Three Houses that I love, including shut-in Bernadetta, elitist noble Lorenz, meek Ignatz, introverted Marianne, scheming Hilda - especially when she's higher level, can be put into different melee/brawler classes, and still holds onto her catch phrase "I'm still a delicate flower, ya know!" - foreigner Petra, playboy Sylvain, stoic swordsman Felix, assassin Shamir, and the broken Ashe. There are more characters that are also enjoyable to watch and interact with, but those I named above all usually had me going "OMG, I love them!" whenever they were on-screen. There's also so many adorable support interactions to fill a shipper's heart. I personally love the idea of Claude and Hilda together, and Marianne either with Raphael or Ignatz.

There's also the character Annette who likes to sing to herself when she's alone and/or doing chores, and a lot of the support interactions she has with Felix involves him stumbling upon her while she's singing these silly songs. She gets embarrassed that she was "caught," regardless of how much Felix tells her he likes them. However, he's so stoic and one-note that she usually reads his sincerity as teasing. Once you get them a high enough ranking, however, she actually becomes less nervous about his hearing her goofy songs, and even teaches him some. It's flippin adorable! This game and its feels, man!

This is two games in a row for my hubby: Three Houses and Trails of Cold Steel.

RPGs sure know how to pull at the heart strings, huh?

I've also have been yearning to re-play "Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" and "Majora's Mask." I have both for the 3DS, so I don't even have to unbury and hook up Hubby's N64. However, as I went to switch out the game I already had in my 3DS, I realized I never actually completed "Professor Layton and the Unwound Future." So I spent about an hour or two this past weekend finishing that game. I haven't started up OoT yet, but it's on the docket.

Layton is another game where there's a lovely cast of characters. However, unlike with the RPGs Hubby plays, I tend to play puzzle-themed games. So the cast of characters are lovely and quirky, but they don't really stick with you quite the same way. For this game, the emotional pull is the friendship between Layton and his apprentice Luke - think Batman and Robin without the GrimDark grit and fighting; just the detective work - as well as Layton reminiscing about his lost love Claire. Both are so bittersweet. I'm tempted to forego Zelda, since I've played both games, and instead play the next Layton game in the line-up. I'm pretty sure I have "Professor Layton and the Last Specter" around here somewhere. I'm fairly certain Hubby bought it for me when he got me Unwound Future.

I'm torn! If only I played games more consistently, it wouldn't be such a problem for me. However, I do so many other things, it's actually become quite rare for ME to be the player - as opposed to me casually watching Hubby play while I do something else; like fold laundry. While I only played Unwound Future for roughly 37hrs, according to the play clock on my save file, it probably kept me over a year to actually complete the game. Thankfully, when you start up a save file in the Professor Layton games they give you a recap of the "Story so far..." to remind you what happened, precisely for those of us that go MONTHS between sessions.

I've wanted to play Zelda for a while now, and I don't precisely know where Last Specter is, so I'm probably going with OoT, but still....

Other story I've consumed: Hubby and I rented and watched "Shazam!" finally. It might be my favorite DC movie yet, although "Wonder Woman" is still up there, and "Aquaman" is actually decent as well. Seems the DCEU has finally figured out that going GrimDark with their stories isn't what audiences necessarily want. I really enjoy the characterization of everyone, but then again, I only really know Shazam via the Justice League cartoons and the like, so I'm not sure how comic-book accurate it is. At the very least, however, the casual viewer should enjoy it. Also, yeah, Billy's bestie Freddy is great, but can we just pause a moment to reflect on how amazing little Darla is!? She's adorable, and the actress's comedic timing is fantastic! While I still don't quite understand the internet term 'stan' enough to use it in a sentence myself, I get the word's meaning enough to now completely understand all the "Darla Stan" posts I saw on my Tumblr dash in April.

This weekend I also tried to plow through more "Steven Universe" episodes. At first, I didn't get the appeal of the show. It looked like another dumb Cartoon Network show with sloppy, over-exaggerated Western animation styling. In fact, that was precisely the point! To make it look and feel like any other CN show to draw kids in. Then it evolved to this amazing story that I 100% get the hype about. It tackles genderization, LGB relationships, slavery, caste systems, PTSD, anxiety, self-worth, colonization, healthy vs abusive relationships, and there's even veiled sexual consent discussions in the story via the use of gem fusion practices. I'm sure there's more life-lesson themes throughout that I'm missing or forgetting - such as the importance of open communication between guardians and wards/parents and kids - but that list seemed substantial enough anyway.

I had tons of friends tell me to watch this show, and finally one of them gave me a way to watch the series - since CN wasn't airing reruns of it, and it wasn't OnDemand. I got a few episodes in, casually made my way through the first season and about half of the second. I kept thinking I needed to go through a few more episodes here and there. Then the latest Overly Sarcastic Productions Trope Talk came up, discussing Plot Twists. Which included this disclaimer because, well... plot twists...
The font may be a touch difficult for some people to read, but the stories that have major spoilers discussed in the video include:
  • Game of Thrones (ALL SEASONS)
  • Steven Universe (season 5)
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming
  • Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse
  • Terminator 2: Judgment Day
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Avengers: Endgame
A looooot of MCU content there... I'm sure Red discussed that trivia as well, but I wouldn't know right now, seeing as I haven't watched the video. Why? Well, because I've seen all of the spoiled content... EXCEPT for Steven Universe.

So, I figured I needed to put my butt in gear so I can finish the series and go back to watch this Trope Talk. I'm going painfully slow for Omnibladestrike. I got him hooked on Overly Sarcastic Productions, specifically Red's Trope Talks, and he loves talking about the Trope Talks with me. He's been dying to discuss this one, I'm sure, seeing as he brings it up every time we see each other. Also, Steven Universe episodes are only 10 minutes long, and yet it has been THREE WEEKS since that Trope Talk was uploaded, and I STILL have season 5 - and most of season 4 - to get through.

I did spend HOURS plowing through season 3 and the start of season 4 this past weekend. The power on just our block went out on Saturday. Because of the storm going on, it was too dark to see the house well enough to clean it - folding is hard when the table has to be used for candles, candle light isn't bright enough for me to feel like I can make sure my dishes are clean, no electricity means no vacuuming, etc - and there wasn't much Hubby and I could do to entertain ourselves after chatting for a while. We used our phones for a bit, knowing I could just go out to my car to recharge them before bed. We couldn't really read though... candle light and all. How did people read by candle light? They must have had better candles to utilize... I just had little tea-lights and Yankee candles.

We also couldn't play cards or a table top game because Hubby didn't like the idea of them being so close to the candles. That and the lack of table space, as previously mentioned. Finally, later in the evening, knowing my laptop still was at full battery, I brought up Steven Universe, and we watched that until my laptop nearly died. Got Hubby drawn into the story, I think.

Also, I don't know if I have a favorite Gem, but Peridot's attempts to fight the Crystal Gems and get back off Earth are adorable and hilarious, and I love her! Her bravado is fantastic, and I actually really like her graveled voice as well. If it were a deeper tone; more of a growl to it, then I could see that as Trish's voice.

I'm getting off topic. My point was that I started watching SU again after that Trope Talk went up, but then I started seeing promos on Cartoon Network for a Steven Universe TV movie premiering on September 2nd. So now I'm trying to race through the episodes so I'm set for the movie in a couple of weeks. And it seems I'm helping Hubby get caught up for the movie as well.

The trick though is that I still have 48 episodes to watch - two of which are 2-parters. While each episode is only 10 minutes long, that's still EIGHT HOURS WORTH of SU to finish in about 12 days! I do need to pick up the pace on these episodes!

But hold on, because we're not through yet! A few weeks ago, ChibiSunnie gave me a heads up on a manga sale. Chibi and I had discussed for a while now how we needed to get our hands on the "Fruits Basket" sequel "Fruits Basket Another," especially now that it's finally getting translated. The third and final manga in the series is supposed to come out October 29th. So, Chibi and I both took advantage of the sale, and ordered all three mangas. She's waiting for the third to publish before getting her shipment, but I got the first two in the series in the mail over the weekend. I also bought Hubby the next omnibus for "Air Gear," and I bought both of us the next two volumes of "Psyren." Mangas all around!

Yes, I did already devour the FBA mangas. It's a short series that focuses on the children of the original cast. You don't get to see the original cast, but they're alluded to, which is nice, because you get a sense of what they're up to now that they're in their late-30s/40s/early-50s. It's also fun to see what traits passed down to the kids. There's even one page that just cracked me up so much. It's literally the end of the second volume. Nothing really by way of spoilers, but if you want to go in cold, I'll drop it into a spoiler box.

For those who don't want the spoiler, it's basically a one-time tease turned into a long-running family inside-joke. It's nice to have tie-ins like that. Even so, knowledge of the original manga isn't necessarily needed to enjoy FBA. The sequel series IS certainly set up to be read second, however, as one would expect. The main reason is the obvious spoilers as to how "Fruits Basket" ended. Although, aside from Haru and Ayame, I don't think any of the original cast of characters are ever referenced by name; more referenced by their careers and/or their relationships with the other parents/adults.

For instance, within the first few pages of the series, you met the principal of the high school the new cast attends. Readers of "Fruits Basket" will instantly know him as the former class president who was practically begging Yuki to be his successor. Well, apparently he was more fixated on Yuki than we originally thought, because he's constantly giving one character preferential treatment out of respect and admiration for the kid's father: Yuki. You also figure out another character's mother based on the character explaining her mother being the president of the Prince Yuki fanclub. It's also fairly easy to figure out the parentage based on character design. The kids look a LOT like their parents. Near carbon-copies of the same-gender parent.

The reviews on the first manga weren't great, but I think it's because I suspect the readers that reviewed were expecting a more in-depth story. One that was a 26-volume tome like "Fruits Basket" was. The main conflicts are over now, however, and it was supposed to be a quick check-in with the world of Furuba, and so it's a short and sweet 3 volume series. It still has drama, but it's mostly focused on the main character Mitoma Sawa learning to see her self-worth and learn to interact with people instead of shutting herself out from the world. It's a cute story, but it's not "Fruits Basket." Just like how "Rugrats: All Grown Up" wasn't "Rugrats" or "Girl Meets World" wasn't "Boy Meets World" or "Fuller House" wasn't "Full House" or "Raven's Home" isn't "That's So Raven." So on and so forth.

Still, I'm enjoying it, and I'll be sad to see it end with that last manga in October.

I was also pleasantly surprised this past week to see that Taurus Pixie had updated "Chat Vert." So you KNOW I had to go and read that latest chapter!

You can read it too here: Chapter 9: Totally Not a Date

Likewise, EdenDaphne updated "Discordant Sonata" this weekend, so I had THAT to read as well!

You can find the latest chapter here: Chapter 10: Nocturne

So... yeah... a lot of video game story absorption, TV show watching, and story reading - both fanfic and manga. Maybe all of this, plus that Ed Sheeran song, can re-inspire me to get pen to paper myself, as it were.

We'll see, I guess!
