Can I Get a Collab?

Est. Read Time: 20min
This Month's Font: Comic Neue (again)

Hey, Gang. You remember last update when I mentioned I have been working on an update since the summer, but it kept getting pushed back? That I should be able to publish a second update within November to try to get back on track with my uploading schedule? Yeah.... this would be that post.... The... uh... publishing schedule yet again didn't go as planned. Mostly because every time I'm nearly done with this update I get delayed. Then, when I have free time again, the time-sensitive portions of my post have passed and I have to rework. It was that way with my birthday week. Then again for Breast Cancer Awareness month and Halloween in October. And, most recently, talking about American Thanksgiving and my husband's birthday, assuming I'd be able to post this last week.

So, back to the proverbial drawing board I had to go yet again. Having to completely rework the opening of this post. Weeeeeeeee...

It's just easier to jump right into the point of this update.

Back in my September update, I had asked a seemingly rhetorical question: "I have surprisingly more to say now, but this post has already gotten so long.... how does that keep happening to me?"

In truth, I think I know the answer to the "how do these things get so long when I thought I had nothing to say?" question.

After roleplaying again both in D&D and in World Wide Wrestling, I've noticed how stories briefly flowed easier for me again. Hubby would pitch an idea to me for an NPW, and I would help him build it up; come up with the backstory and personality. Secret lore developed from both the NPCs and my characters, in both the wrestling game and D&D. You probably picked up on that when I went off for ages about Ned Patrick Corney and the WWW plotlines we havegoing on. On top of all that, talking with Hubby about those roleplay games and a sci-fi Actual Play that we had watched had me thinking about Scum & Villainy again, as I mentioned last update.

On the fanfic front, I would read some fanfics - usually written by MostLovedGirl, if I'm honest - and their story alone would spark something. I would picture the scene from another character's perspective, or I'd think about a hand-waved scene (a "fade to black", if you will) and what could have happened there, or I would have expected a scene to go a different way. I'd typically write a theory or two in my comments on the fic. Then, either the fic's author or other readers would reply to my comments. After some back-and-forth, I would end up writing a spin-off story inspired by the original fic. (I talk more about this below)

Alternatively, I would hijack Ronoxym's stories based on our X-Future characters as we discussed how in- or out-of-character Willow or Trish were. Aurora Morgen or Dragnime would talk to me about their original stories, and I would just burst with ideas as I think of ways they could flesh out their worlds and/or characters more.

Finally, I would start off these blogs believing that I had nothing to truly say to you fine folks, or I'd lament about being stuck with where to go with a particular story. However, as I seemingly grasp at straws on what to tell you all, or I relay the problem with my latest story over to you, magically it all comes together. I suddenly have endless things to tell you, or the solution to a lingering literary problem manifests.

None of this happens in a vacuum though. If I simply talked to myself to try to work through my writer's block - or world building hiccups, or problem sections of my stories - I get nowhere. If I try to come up with stories completely off the dome my head is unbearably empty. No thoughts.

Panel from Shut Up, Takamori!
by Kamiharu Haruno

(Side tangent, but ChibiSunnie introduced me to this new manga series: Shut Up, Takamori! I am ADORING the story. It's so wonderfully unhinged. I'll talk more about it below. But this panel in particular is my new favorite panel ever. I just love her "head empty" expression! Now, back to our regularly scheduled topic....)

Why is it that my head just full-on flushes all inspiration and drive from my mind whenever I sit with a writing problem alone, but I can instantly crank the faucet on to full-stream if I'm relaying the info to ANYONE else, even if they can't respond? I think it's pretty obvious. What I'm truly missing is someone to collaborate with; someone to bounce ideas off of. Hubby can be that person on occasion, but, unfortunately, not often enough.

Honestly, I feel like I've known this about myself for years now. Since I don't have a consistent collaborator, though, I just try to pretend that I can do this alone. I mean, I kind of have to, or I'm forced to give up my passion, right?

It's not for lack of trying. I'll routinely ask for help and tell people my ideas, but none of them bounce back. There would be virtually no interaction there. People would tell me that my idea/story was interesting; keep going; what's next? All of which are very encouraging, don't get me wrong, but there's not really much there to build off of. There's no follow-up questions to help get my brain turning. There wasn't the same back-and-forth of, say

"Oh! But what about [blank]?"
"I love that! But what if I do it like this instead?"
"Yeah! And then [blank] could happen!"
"I didn't even THINK of that! YES!"

I just about never get that level of back-and-forth when I'm talking about my writing with someone. There's no engagement. Everyone is so passive as they listen to me. It's hard to get any kind of feedback from anyone. Even back when I would participate in a writing group, it was almost like pulling teeth to try to get critiques. I'd get a lot of encouraging nods and people telling me that they liked what I wrote, but that would be it. It didn't spark anything from them. It didn't get their own creative juices going as they excitedly tried to theorize on what could happen next, or what would happen if a character did x, y, or z instead. No one asked me follow-up world-building questions or suggested that a character act/react a certain way instead. No one would even tell me a specific phrase or line or bit of dialogue that they particularly enjoyed (or one that stood out like a sore thumb). Nothing. Just.... nothing.

Probably one of the core causes for my impostor syndrome. If I don't evoke creativity or engagement, could my stories TRULY be as good as people tell me? Is that why I'm forgotten in the fandom? My writing is entertaining, but it doesn't SPARK anything like other writers? Nothing lingers? I mean, I don't inspire fanfic spin-offs or fanart or fan comics or fan theories, etc. If people are only taking in my work passively, is my writing only about B-grade?

Ignoring THAT existential crisis for the moment. Let's go back to my need for someone to work with/build off of, a lot of the time I use you guys for the much-needed feedback. A sort of proxy, if you will. Even if I were to verbally talk to myself to get the ideas out - pitching them to myself and responding in kind - my brain empties.

"No. You are still just talking to yourself. No ideas for you!"

Writing to you fine folks, on the other hand, while I rarely get responses, I guess my brain still knows there's that possibility. I am projecting outward. I am talking to someone else. And, magically, my head fills with solutions or inspiration that had long eluded me.

I'll tell you guys what I'm planning for my story, and then I'll have some fictitious amalgamation of you all coming back at me with potential plot holes. As I respond to "you" I'm able to sort out those plot holes right then and there. In real-time. You guys have probably seen this very thing happen in my older posts.

This leads me to my biggest writing conundrum, though. I can't really use myself as a sounding board anymore, as we established. I HAVE to have something/someone exterior to me, and I rarely have that. Even if I continue to trick my mind by chatting "with" you fine folks (for however long that solution lasts before my brain becomes immune), it takes me about 6 weeks to publish anything! That's just too long to try to sort out ALL of my writing woes. Which brings me to my key question.

How do I trick my mind so writing can be a sort of solo activity again?

Don't get me wrong, I do have lots of support when it comes to people encouraging me to write, and telling me that I'm a good writer. However, when it comes to having that sounding board outside of myself? I'm dead in the water.

On the flipside, Hubby has me. He can come up with a character, pitch ideas my way, and/or give me broad-stroke storylines he's trying to flesh out. Then I'll take those seeds and run with them. Not long after, I'll bring back what I have, which sparks new inspiration in him. He tosses another seed my way, and I go full-bore. Rinse and repeat.

Same with my writer friends. They'll give me broad-strokes of their story plot or world build. They'll give me character skeletons. They'll let me know the vibe they're trying to achieve. I'll respond with "Oooh, that's a good idea, I particularly love this element!" or "How about if you do this... or that?" or "What if this happened instead?" or "Oh, yeah! I can totally see [blank]" or "I like it, but I think it would be cooler if you do this." or even "Hmmm. I dunno. I don't really understand what you're going for there. Could you explain further?" So on and so forth.

For my writer friends - and even for Hubby as he character- and world-builds - I get invested and want to know more about the lore. I want to better understand the characters. I want to know why x-, y-, or z-solution wouldn't work out instead. I want them to paint a picture so I can better imagine the characters and the world they are building.

I keep asking for more and more and more like a little glutenous goblin.

And these back-and-forth sessions seem to really help as they try to find answers to my questions or more content for me to consume. I push them to dive deeper.

I never really had anyone - not even really my writing teachers - do the same for me and my writing. No one asks to know more about my OCs. No one asks for lore drops or further explanations for my worlds. No one questions why my characters pick one solution and not another. No one asks me to further explain something. No one theorizes. No one suggests, "What if this instead?"

Which is a bit of a struggle.

Again, don't get me wrong, it's encouraging that everyone who reads my stuff goes, "Wow, this is amazing. There's really nothing there that I can help you improve on." But, can that possibly be true? It can't, right? It's impossible for there to not be something that I can improve on. In ALL of my writing over the years, it can't possibly be true that the only thing people have questioned was the fight scene choreography I wrote up for Devon and Trish.

I would LOVE it if my writing was so good that nothing further needs explaining, or that my characters' decisions made perfect sense to the reader 100% of the time. That can't be possible though. Especially all the way back at the young age of 18.

Again, reflecting on my time with the writing group, I would be able to give suggestions to just about everyone who read their works aloud:

"I really liked this line"
"This phrasing was amazing"
"You really evoked this feeling of [blank] here"
"I'm curious as to why your character didn't do [blank] instead"
"I wish your character was a bit more [blank] in that scene"
"The wording doesn't quite work. What about something closer to [blank]?"
"I'm confused on the structure of this society. Could you elaborate on [blank]?"
"Oooo! I really love what you have here. Could you expand on that?"
"We were able to sort out what the character was doing from earlier descriptions.
It's redundant to full-on tell us here. I think you can cut it."
"This feels too vague. I got confused as to who they were talking about"
"This is my new favorite character! I need more of them!"
"That is such an awesome character name! I love it!"
"I CANNOT keep this character's name in my head no matter how many times
       I see it. Sorry."
"Oooo! That's fun lore! Can we get more of it? I want to know more!"

You get the idea.

While I was able to just about always find SOMETHING to comment on for everyone else's story - what I liked, what didn't work for me, how they could improve, theories/questions that popped into my head while hearing/reading the story, etc - I almost never got the same level of feedback in return. The notable exception was whenever I'd get feedback on my fanfics. Almost always, when there was something they really liked, or they were confused about, or they think I should present in another way.... it was something canon to Miraculous Ladybug. Therefore, the praise was for the show's writers; not me. The confusion was because of the show's canon, and the corrections suggested would kind of break the mythos/lore the show presented. Not bad, if you're writing what's known as "fix-it fics" where your goal is to take canon and "correct" it. For me, though? When I'm trying to write close-to-canon? Those suggestions weren't much help, sadly..... In other words, the engagement was almost never for my original content within the ML universe.

Even if I were to take the suggestions and work on a "fix-it fic" instead, I would simply be repairing somebody else's story, not expanding upon my own.

Which circles me back to my earlier question: Am I truly a good writer if I can't evoke engagement with my stories?

The struggle isn't just with the lack of engagement when talking about my stories directly to people such as my husband, my writing group, or my writing friends. It's when I scroll through Tumblr and I see this person post about a scene in a fic that spoke to them so much that they couldn't resist drawing it out. Or someone really loved a character's redesign and they had to try it out themselves via fanart. When I first joined the ML fandom, I was actually introduced to a few fics via an artist drawing out comic adaptations of certain fic chapters they especially adored. I have also personally written fanfics based off other people's fan works.

My old Hey Arnold! fic I Thought You Liked Redheads was inspired by fanart of Helga Pataki with her hair dyed red and the artist noting that Arnold's first two crushes were redheads.

My one ML Christmas story Perfect Doesn't Need To Be Perfect was a retelling of Taurus Pixie's story Twelve Days of Chatmas, but from Marinette's point of view instead of Adrien's.

Ladybug's Simp Squad was based off of fanart of Adrien and Alya wearing "Ladybug Simp" sweatshirts and the subsequent Tumblr thread of people coming up with the backstory behind the sweatshirts.

Could Your Paradise Also Be Your Hell was a retelling of a chapter from MostLovedGirl's fanfic Remember That Time When... filling in the gap of what Marinette did while Adrien went to bed alone.

Likewise, Rolling Thunder was inspired by MLG's story Finding Yourself in the Details, and I Think I Like You (Maybe More Than I Should) was a retelling of her story Ha! You Think That's Embarrassing? but from Adrien's POV instead of Marinette's.

Meanwhile, with the exception of ChibiSunnie drawing fanart of my one HA! fic, and someone else drawing fanart of the Chat Noir Appreciation Day outfits I had Marinette, Adrien, Alya, and Nino wear in Peeping Tomcat. I have had nothing. No other fanart. No fan comics. No spin-off fanfics. No theorizing. No story recommendations. Nada.

Again, I want to stress that I do indeed get lovely feedback. I do. I love all the reviews that I get. They make me smile every single time. Be they long multi-paragraph gush-fests or a simple heart emoji. I love them all so dearly. Every last one is precious to me. I love everyone who tells me that I am definitely a writer. You keep me going.

As do those small handful of readers who have mentioned in their reviews that they've read my story multiple times before realizing they never left a comment. Or the one or two readers who purposefully left a second comment to let me know that they HAD to come back to re-read my story. Or the precious few who have written in their review how much my story moved them.

Each of those reviews are torches leading me through the darkness of my uncertainty.

Which is why leaving a comment/review is so important to artists, btw....

But this lack-of-engagement thing outside of those... maybe dozen people? The fact that MY stories don't seem to inspire spin-offs or retellings or fanart or theorizing, etc? When I've shared maybe half-a-dozen of those Tumblr Ask games where followers are encouraged to ask you about your OCs or writing, and I've maybe gotten 2 responses total from all them? The struggle I have to come up with content myself; without being inspired by someone else's work? The need to bounce ideas off of someone else (if I'm not outright swiping their idea; I mean I AM a FANFIC writer....)? I dunno. I guess it all adds up, and it's been years now since I've truly felt like a writer.

Circling back to my original point, not that it's unrelated to this "Am I truly a writer?" crisis I've been going through. I guess the reason I write fanfiction - both based off of officially published works as well as based off of other fanworks - is the same reason why I love social, collaborative roleplay games like D&D, Scum & Villainy, Blades in the Dark, or World Wide Wrestling. It's the ability to co-write a bigger story with other people. To take the start of what someone else created and expand upon it. To "Yes, and..." off of someone.

Maybe that's why my only real concepts for "original stories" are retellings of those roleplay games: relaying over what happened to Jolene in her D&D campaign, letting the world see the adventures of the second generation of X-men in X-future, displaying the chaos that The Stardancer crew has caused the universe in Scum & Villainy.

I dunno. I have no clue what to do with all of this info. How to process it. What it means for my writing in the future. Is it something I have to work on, or is it something I just need to learn to work WITH?

I just... I guess I had a mild epiphany and I wanted to share it?

The only thing I truly know after all of this is that I need a permanent writing partner. Any takers?

In the meantime, I'm still chugging away at my reading. No novels yet, but a TON of digital comics still.

My weekly schedule has expanded to:

My completed series list now is up to:

*The Duke's Teddy Bear is a bit complicated. I ALMOST completed the story. I got as far as free reading will get me. I have 3 more episodes to go to fully complete the story, but that will take 9 coins total to unlock. Translation? Roughly only about $1. I've just been stubborn about giving the app my money. Instead, I've been grinding out one of the games Webtoon advertises in order to earn Webtoon coins. Honestly, it might be worth just giving Webtoon the buck.

Generated by Bitmoji
Doctored by LycoRogue

And then we have the series that are either Canvas, and therefore don't update regularly, or are on hiatus. I read these in those lull-days (Sunday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday):

Then there's Double The Trouble, Twice As Nice over on Comikey. I gave it enough time that more chapters are up. I'm debating if I dive back in since I loved this series so much, and it updates roughly every fortnight.

There's also a few other stories that I had started up but haven't kept up with that I could bring back into rotation: Avatar: The Last Airbender, Growing Up Gerudo, Mythic Item Obtained, or Blood Stain over on Webtoon, or either My Housemate Sano-kun Is Just My Editor! or The Lady Likes a Nerd over Princes on Comikey.

On top of AAAAAAALLLLL of that, I also have probably another dozen stories on my To Read list on Webtoon, and half as many over on Comikey!

It may have been over a year since I've picked up a traditional book, but I sure as hecken getting back into reading daily before bed.

And that's not including keeping up with zenmisery's latest story Intensity.

Finally, there's that manga I mentioned earlier (the one with the "Head Empty" panel): Shut Up, Takamori!

Sadly, only the first chapter is free to read, but, MAN, am I itching for more of that story!

Minamikawa knows a secret about her classmate, Takamori.

Or rather, she’s forced to know, since as a telepath, she can hear Takamori's thoughts... which on most days, contain blatant confessions of his love for her!

A high school rom-com about an easily flustered telepathic girl [who] wants to shut up her secret suiter's lovey-dovey thoughts!

        - Official Summary from Manga UP!

Aside from the greatly amusing illustrations (see: above "Head Empty" panel), the story itself is hilarious. For anyone who watches anime/reads mangas, or anyone who consumes content inspired by anime/manga. You know all of those scenes where the character is cool, calm, and collected on the surface, and then the audience sees their inner thoughts where they go absolutely feral or are beyond love-sick? Now picture those moments, but from the perspective of the person the cool and collected character is thinking about... and said topic of those thoughts is telepathic.

Takamori usually keeps to himself, not wanting to bother Minamikawa. However, whenever she hands him his dropped pencil or eraser she's flooded with his thoughts of how sweet and kind she is and how close they are and how he has to keep it together. She tries to deter his affections by being mean to him, only to INSTANTLY feel guilty and play it off as her simply teasing him. Which then means he finds her even MORE adorable.

She is being love bombed without the poor guy even realizing he's doing it. And seeing her freak out about how to handle the situation is fantastic! Especially since he's never outwardly shown her affection, so she can't even turn him down without revealing her secret of being a telepath. So, she decides to change tactics and essentially tries to get him to confess his feelings to her so that she has an excuse to know of his affections. THEN she can turn him down and hope he can move on.

Problem is, her attempts to get HIM to confess just makes it look like SHE is flirting.

For anyone who has watched/read Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro, this manga gives kind of the same vibes.

Man! I wish I could get more of it without paying. It sucks being poor....

Circling back to my writing. As mentioned, I kind of fell off the wagon pretty quickly during November. I only barely chipped away at Seduce With Caution. I think I'm redoing the sex scene I've already written. I still need to finish up the Adrien Confesses To Marinette scene. There's also a lot of connecting scenes that I have to iron out still.

So, for reals, if anyone wants to jump aboard as my beta or something, I'm game! I really REALLY want to get back on track with this story, at least. Gift it to zenmisery before she disappears like a cryptid again. Then, MAYBE I can FINALLY get back on track with One And The Same finally.

Maybe my first step is to try to get an actual December update done, so this can remain my "belated November" update.

Let's see how I do this go.....

The Conclusion of PfL and My Reading of Armada

Happy Spring, everyone!

Although... it still feels like winter here. There's bursts of nice, warm-ish weather, but it gets cut through by wicked-cold winds. As I'm writing this post, I'm huddled under a fleece blanket, a thick flannel one, and my.... well, I don't know if it's an official Snuggie, but it's a blanket with sleeves....

It would be reeeeeeaaaaaally nice if spring legit showed up sometime soon. I hate being cold all the time.

A comic book artist I follow - Linda Luksic Sejic - started up a side-project-that-is-soon-becoming-an-actual-comic-series called Punderworld a few months back. It's her take on the Greek myths centered around Hades and Persephone. With that mindset, she thinks she figured out why it's still cold all over the world, even though the northern hemisphere is SUPPOSED to be warming up.
I love that smug look on Hades' face. These two are adorable
when interpreted as actually having a mutual love between them.
Okay, so I tried to behave and not repost the picture, but Tumblr decided it wanted to be difficult and not let me share it properly. I tried embedding it, but then I lost the next few paragraphs of my blog post.... so I have to do it this way.

Anyway, Linda is awesome, and you should both support her and check out her work. So, here are her links: Sigeel's Tumblr and her DeviantArt account. She's working on creating a Patreon to fund turning Punderworld into a legit comic book series, so feel free to take a peek at that as well.

I need to check my own finances, but I'm hoping to at least become a $1 tier backer, or something along those lines. It may not be much, but at least I know I'm supporting an artist I enjoy for a work I LOVE.

Anyway, back to me!

As per usual for me lately, "life got in the way," and my chapters for "Prescription for Love" were delayed. Instead of an "every three days" schedule, I was on more of an "every four, five, maybe six days" schedule.

At least I still updated once - usually twice - a week.

Anyway, last Tuesday, I went to go see "Captain Marvel" with Skarabrae-stone, which meant I wasn't home to finish the 8th chapter of PfL. Why didn't I finish it between publishing last week's blog post and going to the movie?

Honestly? I don't remember. I have no clue what I did with my day, and I again slacked off with my time audits. Do we now know WHY I have to do them? If I keep wasting my days and forgetting what it is I even did? I need the calendar as much for accountability as I do for my pathetic memory.

Wednesday was generally a wash since I had work, then zumba, and then Hubby and I have TV shows we watch. I did get the chapter up just before midnight on Wednesday though. Close enough, right?

"Prescription for Love: Chapter 8"
On FanFiction            On ArchiveOfOurOwn            On DeviantArt

The story was technically up on the 20th, and so I was aiming to have the 9th and final chapter up 3 days later: on Saturday the 23rd. That didn't happen either.

I was distracted at work on Thursday, and after was the first official "Omnibladestrike Thursday Visits" meet-up. He has a new job, and it means he's not really available on weekends anymore. Over the past couple years, we've tried to have a weekly meet-up with him where we could watch some bizarre anime or play games together. It was originally on Sundays since I get out of work at 4, and it would give us the most time to hang out. Then football started up, so we shifted to post-6pm on Saturdays.

But Omni doesn't have weekends any longer, and we don't want to lose our weekly meet-ups, so we're trying for Thursday Evenings now. He really wants to get back into little "writing meet-ups" were we can pow-wow and discuss our WIPs; really help him brainstorm so he stays excited about his project. We also don't want to give up on our anime-watching since we have about four different series going. Omni has a character attached to our Switch version of Diablo III, so we HAVE to find time to still run around and kill demons... Plus, there's tons of board games Hubby wants to try out with Omni, and more games where Omni is part of a Legacy campaign.

So my Thursday nights are pretty booked up, and we'll probably cram as much in as possible until Omni feels like he has to drive home before he passes out.

Needless to say, I didn't do any writing on Thursday. Did a bunch of reading though. I'll get to that later.

Friday I had off, and could have easily worked on my chapter. However, it was a rare Friday that Hubby was also off, so it turned into Clean The Apartment day. I would rotate between cleaning for an hour or two and relaxing for an hour, that way I wouldn't feel overwhelmed.

One hour was for food and hanging out with Hubby, but most of those "relaxation" hours were used sprawled out on my bed reading. My lower back was really cramping up, and it helped to just sprawl.

Wolfhearted showed up that evening, and we watched the latest episode of ML. I loved it. Wolf was "meh" about it. Mainly because it was a good old "mind wipe" episode.

For those of you who didn't click, just know that I loved the episode, so after Wolfhearted left, I spent the next FOUR HOURS flipping through Tumblr for posts on this episode. Now, keep in mind that the episode came out on Monday, the 18th. I had waited five days to watch it. So that was roughly a week's worth of posts I've been avoiding so I wouldn't see spoilers. I didn't even go into the episode tag. I just scrolled through the people I follow.

There were about 12 or 13 people who had posted ML content in reference to the episode. Most were quick gif sets, short reactions, or fanart. Simple to see the post and move on.

IT.  STILL.  KEPT.  ME.  FOUR.  HOURS!!!!

A lot of people also enjoyed the episode it seems. From a fanfic writer's perspective, I loved it because it showed me so many new facets of Adrien's and Marinette's personalities, along with Tikki and Plagg. I found out more about the world ML takes place in. It showed me possibilities. It will be a great episode to go back to for reference material.

Anyway, that was my Friday night.... so no working on PfL. That is, until I went to bed. To try to calm my mind and lull myself to sleep, I mentally tell myself a story. It helps my mind focus on one insignificant thing until it can turn off.

To make up for my slacking, and knowing that I wanted to post the next chapter by Saturday, I started mentally working out how to conclude my story... and then I drifted off to sleep.

Saturday I figuratively cracked my knuckles and focused on the story. I was doing fairly decently. I had the chapter written by about 10pm that day. I just couldn't stay focused enough to edit. Especially since Disney channel was airing "Moana." I really enjoy this movie, and that climactic scene between Moana and Te Kā? Gives me chills EVERY time I see it.

If you haven't watched Moana, I advise that you don't watch the below clip until you do, because you don't want to ruin the impact of the ending. However, if you HAVE watched it before, just re-watch the song "Know Who You Are" and tell me you don't get chills!

I just wish I could have found a clip that started a weeeee bit sooner so you also had that single flute intro and walk down to the ocean. That's the part that really gives me chills. And the line "they have stolen the heart from inside you" is so powerful I'm tearing up again just writing it out.

UGH! I just wish Frozen hadn't overpowered this movie. Moana is so underrated. The music is fantastic, the visuals are stunning, the comedy is great, and there is NO romantic love interest in the whole movie, for anyone.

Anyway, I'm going on a tangent here. My point is that Moana is amazing, and even the less-than-amazing scenes, like with Tamatoa, still give us fantastic cover songs....

I really enjoy this man's covers, and, honestly, I think this version sounds more on-brand with Lin-Manuel Miranda than the actual movie version. He also did this nice cover of "How Far I'll Go."
Yeah, just... go check out more from Jonathan Young. He has something for just about everyone. Have fun.

Sooooo, yeah, that was Saturday. I knew I should have focused. I knew I wanted to post that day. I knew I COULD post that day if I focused. I watched a movie and snuggled a husband instead....

Whoops....

SUNDAY! Sunday at work I could just do the edits. That's it. Easy. I could post the chapter around 4pm after I got home. I'd still be late, but it wouldn't be all that bad. I mean, I was almost two days late for the previous chapter. I had this!

Until I didn't.

I'm not sure why, but as I was unpacking my netbook at work so I could work on those edits, I also pulled out my red notebook I keep my Miraculous Ladybug notes in. I decided to update my notes in the back of the book. I keep a running list of akumatized supervillains and their motivation while akumatized. Things like Zombizou wanted to spread "love" like a zombie virus, or Dark Owl wanted to get rid of LB and CN so he was the only superhero for Paris, or Simon Says wanted to hypnotize Gabriel in order to humiliate him, or Despair Bear wanted to prove that he could control Chloe afterall. Stuff like that.

It kept me like five minutes to write down the seven akumatized supervillains shown thus far in season 3. However, when I got to Backwarder - the episode that spawned PfL - I had a lightning flash of inspiration. I'll talk a bit more about that later. The point now is that I worked on that side project - to my already side project of PfL instead of working on "One and the Same" - instead of editing my final chapter.

Whoops again.

So I tried to hide myself away when I got home, that way I could FINALLY get the story done and posted. Well, between grocery shopping, eating dinner, and realizing the chapter I had written Saturday needed more help than I originally thought.... I didn't post chapter 9 until nearly 11pm!

Oh well, at least it DID get posted. I also received reviews pretty much within the hour, so YAY for fans having my story on an alert of some sort.

If you haven't had a moment to finish off my story, you can get to the final chapter below.

"Prescription for Love: Chapter 9"
On FanFiction            On ArchiveOfOurOwn            On DeviantArt

Just a reminder that you can also use the above links to get to the story, and then use the chapter select, or "More From Lycorogue" to the right of the chapter on DA, in order to get to the first chapter if you've missed this story up until now.

Gladly, not many seemed to have missed this "little" story, at least, when looking at the grand scheme of my readership. As of this posting, here are my stats for this story as a whole.
FFN: 3,860 views, 20 faves, 30 followers, and 22 reviews
AO3: 1,742 hits, 97 kudos, 9 bookmarks, and 22 comments
DA: 78 views, 5 faves, but no comments on any chapter

Total Results: 5,680 views, 122 faves, 39 followers, and 44 reviews

Tumblr Notes: 86 total; 83 likes and 3 re-blogs
This is my 5th-most reviewed story on FFN, which has a total of 29 works posted there, starting as far back as Aug 2010. Comparatively, I have posted 21 stories over on AO3 since I started that up last year, and PfL is the second-most commented on story. “Peeping Tomcat” still has top billing. "Woven Heartstrings" is a close third: 47 comments on PfL and 46 on WH.

So, basically, my multi-chaptered Miraculous Ladybug stories are my main draw.

Now, sadly, I can't filter my works through any other categories on FFN, and I don't want to take the time to go through each story to manually calculate the order. Especially since this update is already half-a-day late. However, I CAN filter through other categories over on AO3....
  • KUDOS: PfL is in third, behind PT and WH, in that order, for most kudos on a story.
  • BOOKMARKS: PT and WH are still the top two, but my "Hey, Arnold!" one-shot "I Thought You Liked Redheads" squeaks in at 3rd with 11 bookmarks, leaving PfL in 4th with 9.
  • HITS: Once again, PT is number 1 with 8826 hits. WH comes in 2nd with 3219. PfL falls into the number 3 slot again with 1739 hits.
Not too shabby for a plot bunny that was originally going to be a 1000-word one-shot exclusively posted to Tumblr a day after the episode aired, and grew into a nearly 20,000-word multi-chapter story on AO3, FFN, and DA.

You never know where inspiration comes from.

Speaking of! As I mentioned above, on Sunday I tackled a plot-bunny that was brewing in my mind for a month now. It all actually started thanks to Taurus Pixie and her blog. About a month ago, Pixie posted her review of Backwarder, and within that review, Pixie had this paragraph.
However, this scene raised a lot more questions than it answered. When did Master Fu come to Paris? How did he meet Marianne? How did she come to know about the miraculous? She obviously isn't a guardian as it has been stated a few times that Master Fu is the only remaining one alive. So what made Master Fu trust Marianne with such an important secret? More importantly...just who was after the miraculous back then? We heard someone shout that they had to seize the miraculous. Who was it? Gaaah, so many new questions and possibilities have been opened up for us. I do love a good mystery. I always think the show does a really good job at teasing us and letting us catch glimpses of information to help solve everything that's going on. The lore of this show is always super exciting!
The Plot Bunny Alert went off in my head, and I instantly took a screen cap of that paragraph so I could look back at it and contemplate; brew the idea in my head.

What ARE the answers to those questions? I could have fun trying to figure them out. Then, on Sunday, instead of working on editing my final chapter of PfL, I started working on that plot bunny.

BEHOLD! My version of a (Conspiracy) Yard Board.... Just wait until I can find an empty wall somewhere...

The man, the meme, the legend...
As I was working on my notes for this Master Fu and Marianne Lenoir spin-off fanfic idea, I realized how much story needed to be unpacked. Marianne was a love interest for Fu, and she knew about the Miraculouses. There had to have been a build-up of trust there. It couldn't be a simple "love at first sight" sort of thing. And I wanted to take the time to explore how that trust and love grew.

There were also the questions of why Fu was in Paris just before the Nazi invasion in the first place, why Marianne wanted to stay and fight, why Fu returned to Paris but didn't seek her out right away, and when did Master Fu start wearing the Turtle Miraculous, along with other such questions.

That's when it hit me. This "story" could actually be a legit spin-off. It would be more dark and mature, given that the main characters - Fu and Marianne - were adults, and were dealing with the rise of the Nazi party and start of WWII. It could be part superhero story, part spy story, part romance, part mystery/suspense, the list goes on.

And as I cracked my tired knuckles about three hours into all of my writing and research and math - to figure out why Fu and Marianne didn't seem to age as fast as normal - I realized something about my idea. Well, I realized two things.
  1. It was way too much for me to do as a side project. I had already delayed OatS by two months because of "side projects" like WH and PfL. I would have to wait until OatS was done.
  2. I needed help for this massive undertaking, and who better than the woman who inspired me in the first place? A woman who is a wiz when it comes to historical knowledge, and is almost freakishly fast at writing, when she's at a good mental-health spot.
So I messaged Pixie. She seems to love the concept, but has questions of her own. This is what I love about collabs; this back-and-forth. I come up with questions and some answers, my answers spark more questions from her, and she answers some of my questions. Her answers - and her questions - makes me wonder more about our world build, and it just keeps going. Eventually, we have a finely woven net, and we're good to go with our story, with little to no chance of someone catching a plot hole we didn't see.

I just hope this collab goes better than my past ones... Life got in the way of the Jungle Movie script ChibiSunnie and I attempted to write for Script Frenzy once upon a time, and we only got through maybe half of it before our project died.... Then, when Ronoxym and I attempted our Devon/Willow collab, I sort of hijacked the project, and bloated it to the point where it was overwhelming to Ron, and that story also died.... Although, I'm still determined to edit it down again to a point where Ron and I could go back to working on it.

As much fun as building this concept will be with Pixie, I hope we can keep our steam and balance going long enough to actually complete it; even if it takes a year or so.

Regardless, I still need to finish OatS first, and Pixie needs a vacation from writing until she gets her affairs in better order, and her mind can properly and fully re-charge. We probably won't start it until May at the earliest. Maybe closer to June or July.

We'll probably casually throw What Ifs to each other in the meantime though.

But first! OatS while participating in Camp NaNo!

I had also said above that I had been doing some reading. Yes. It is true. Lots of reading, actually. I managed to read the last third or so of "Armada" by Ernest Cline over the past week. I had meant to read it January. I didn't start reading it until about half-way through February. I didn't finish it until the end of March.

I'm doing real well with this year's reading schedule....

I still haven't even really come up with a To Read list, even though I have a ROOM full of books waiting for me to crack them open. Instead, I've been reading fanfics, fanfics, more fanfics, and... oh hey! Fanfics!

So, new goal. No actual list of completed works. No count of 12 stories. Instead, I'm going for word-count, that way 2000-word fanfics also count, because it's still time spent reading.

Here are my rules:
  • I wrote an 80,000+ word novel, and most of the ones I read tend to range between 80,000 and 120,000 words. So I'm going to split the difference and round a novel to about 100,000 words.
  • I still want to read the equivalent of 12 novels by the end of the year.
  • That means I need to read 1,200,000 words of fiction by 11:59pm on December 31st.
I need to go back through the fanfics I've read the first 3 months, so my overall word count might actually err towards a low estimate, just to be safe and fair.

In the meantime, though, I checked on "Armada." It's harder for professionally published works, because they generally don't come with a word count like fanfics do. However, assuming the website ReadingLength.com is accurate, there are 102,950 words in "Armada." What's actually really cool about that site is that it can help you estimate how long it will take to read something. Neat bit of knowledge if you are trying to figure out if it's worth reading, or if you have the time to cram a book into your schedule. Or even if you want to make sure you're packing enough to read for a trip....

I also now know that I average at about 160 words per minute - I am quite the slow reader - and so my next tackling of "Atlas Shrugged" - a book that ReadingLength has listed at 455,300 words - should take me nearly 48hours to conquer. Once you add in that I'll be stopping to take notes so the story is a bit easier for me to sift out, it will probably be about double that length.... And I tend to only manage about 2hrs tops per day for reading, if I read at all.

Anyway, without adding in fanfic word counts, I'm nearly at 103,000 words. It's a start.

Also, while I was kinda close on what the "big twist" for the conclusion of "Armada" was, I was also wrong, and there were a couple other surprises I hadn't predicted. So, Cline did pull off a few "Oh. Neat!" moments within the story.

I don't know what it was, though. Aside from Lex, and another character I won't mention here due to spoilers, I didn't really connect with any of the characters. By the end of the book, the Two Mikes that were the main character's best friends were still indistinguishable for me. There were some moments where you were SUPPOSED to feel for the support characters, but was just kind of "oh. That sucks." I just couldn't empathize with anyone in this novel for whatever reason.

There were also some elements of the story - much like with "Ready Player One" - where you could tell that Cline doesn't quite understand the difference between telling a story via visual media vs. through print media. In other words, it's obvious, for me, at least, that Cline started off as a script writer. The main character Zack didn't have as much Plot Armor on him this go, but there was still a fair amount of Deus ex Machina. At least, what I would consider "well, THAT was convenient" moments. I mean, to be fair, some of it was done on purpose for the mystery of the story, but there are times where the "that was convenient" extended past where it should be; once I thought back on the story as a whole.

All-in-all? The story wasn't for me. I'll stick with "Ready Player One," and perhaps give "Armada" another read when the movie adaptation comes out.

Yup. Another movie adaptation. Like I said, the guy is a script writer by default, so his stories seem to always have a twin movie.

Okay, well, enough bellyaching about Cline's novels, and going on forever about why I don't have progress on my own. This blog post is now 5hrs late, I still have to eat, and I have writing group in less than an hour.

So, I'm waving the white flag here. I'll catch you guys next week. You'll probably just be finishing reading this post by then.

The Equivalents Between Exercising and Writing

Had another “What is my life” breakdown last night. But you folks are forced to read my “woe is me” tales far too much already for me to really get in to that yet again. Just know that I’m struggling to get past it, but I am getting past it. I’m hitting the world with more determination in fact.

First up, I broke out the good old Wii Fit and synced it with our WiiU. I used to do this thing all the time leading up to my wedding. Even though it was a family gift from my mom for all three of us – me, her, and my sister – since I seemed to be the only one that ever used the Wii Fit relatively regularly my mother told me to take it with me when I moved away. I used it a bit during the half-year that I was unemployed right after the wedding. Then I finally got a job, the house fell in to disarray, and I stopped using the Wii Fit under the excuses of “There’s no room for me to really move in order to properly use it” that lead to “Since there’s no room I should use the time cleaning instead of trying to work out” which usually lead to “It’s way too late at night now for me to exercise, plus if I do after going to work and then cleaning I won’t have any time left to write.” Not that I ever really did write. I usually just plopped next to Hubby on the couch, watched some well-deserved TV, and messed around on Facebook.

Fast-forward to about mid-April. I had the livingroom spotless and had an urge to make sure the Wii Fit board would still work with the WiiU – I had forgotten that the WiiU has a backwards compatibility mode that allowed you to revert to the original Wii format. Well, after about an hour of both researching online how to clean out battery corrosion and then successfully saving the Wii Fit board, I used the game for the first time in over a year. I set up my Mii and did the initial Body Test to see my BMI, my weight, and test my balance. Then I put it away.

Jump ahead again to about mid-May and you’ll find Hubby and me participating in a new health-incentive program I’m running at work. The concept is that you earn points – max 6 per day – for eating fruits/vegetables as well as working out. You also earn either one point at the end of the week for maintaining your weight, or two points for losing weight. These points are then accumulated for one of three charities: American Cancer Society, AmericanRed Cross, or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. I chose my personal favorite charity: American Cancer Society. Therefore, the points I earn go towards that charity’s net amount. At the end of the program all of the points earned by every participant across the whole company are added up. Then the points earned for each charity are divided by the number of participants who chose that charity in order to figure out the average amount of points each charity collected. The charity that earns the highest average points receives a $5000 donation from the company. The second-place charity receives $2000, and even the final charity will have $1000 donated. It really is a great way to help others while helping yourself.

Well, over the past two weeks since the program started Hubby and I have been kicking butt in the fruits/veggies department – which in and of itself is impressive since we rarely had any over the winter – but I’ve been slacking in the exercise department. The only time I earned any exercise points was when I was running around to the point of sweating at work. I would go “eh, that counts” and call it a day.

Today I changed that! Today I actually took out the Wii Fit board and used it for more than a glorified scale; since my bathroom one and the one in the breakroom at work are 10pounds off from each other, and I’m not sure which one to trust. Today I actually spent about an hour working out. About 30min with aerobics and another with yoga. Go me!

Each activity in Wii Fit is only about a minute or two long. Most are no more than 4min, unless you do something like “free running” in which you set how long you want to run for and then just jog in place for that long. My point is that I can do essentially the same thing as the push-up scenario in the No More Zero Days concept. “Heck, I could just get on the ground and do one push-up so I don’t have a Zero Day,” turned in to “Well, heck, I can start up the Wii Fit and just do the Body Test.” The hardest part about using the Wii Fit is having to dig the board out of the drawer I keep it tucked away in, and then starting up the program. It takes about five minutes. After those five minutes of starting the darn thing up it seems a waste to just do the Body Test. So I do one game under the Aerobics category. None of them are all that challenging. You only burn about 20calories with each game. Then you think “that wasn’t so hard. That was actually kind of fun” so then another game is played, and another. I switched over to Yoga as a cool-down, and went through each pose even though I really only wanted to do the ones to work out the tension in my shoulders. Next thing I know I’m doing the free run for 10min and chugging a glass of water after a nice workout.

Now here’s the part you’ll care about: I did the same with my writing.

Just like with the Wii Fit, the hardest part is taking the time to just start the darn thing up. Especially since I’m doing a lot more writing in Google Docs, so that I can share my work and get feedback. Now I have to start up my computer, and then the internet, and then Google Docs, and then a new file – or bring up an old one to fix/continue. It takes about five minutes, and so once I push myself to put in the effort to “just write for a little so I don’t have a Zero Day” I suddenly feel like the set up would be a waste of time if I didn’t put in x-minutes in to writing. Next thing I know I’m doing the 10min free run – or in writing terms: I’m working on a fight scene.

I suck at fight scenes.

Like, majorly. Just as I need to train in running because I have absolutely no endurance – like, I can get winded going up stairs if they’re steep enough, even if there’s only about 20 of them – I need to work on fight scenes. Again, just like running, I have the basics and I can do alright when I need to, but certainly nothing to really brag about. “Oh man, I was able to jog in place for 10min.” Ignore the fact that while I wasn’t exactly winded, it did take about three minutes for my breathing to go back to normal once I was done…. “Oh man, I wrote a fight scene.” Ignore the fact that everyone just dodged everyone else’s attacks until the hero finally got the winning blow in.

Exercising and Writing. They go hand-in-hand and I can certainly apply the same tricks to both activities. Something that I need to do more often in fact. More exercising. More writing. More motivation to do something productive both on my days off and on days where I have a short shift.

That being said, I’m proud of my pathetic fight scene, just as I’m proud of my “almost-two-miles” jog. Because they both mean that I pushed myself, and did so after actually getting my lazy butt in gear and doing something I should every day.

Bet you’re curious about the fight scene, huh? Well, like I said, it was pathetic, and it was mostly dialogue. It’s not even done yet. It’s going to be another X-Future: Snippets once I have it to a point that is publishable, and it’s – surprise, surprise – a Trish snippet. Her confronting Devon. A woman who can only stab things and create fire is going up against a man who can manipulate fire and is just as skilled as stabbing things. She’s not going to really get much headway there. Likewise, Devon is trying to use fire against someone who both controls it and is completely fireproof. No dice there either. Both parties need to rethink their strategy. Right now it’s “whomever can Stabby-stabby first wins.”
I’ve also been slowly working on the collab with AngelBlood666. I had a grand old time last week when I created the joint Google Doc file. We would essentially IM each other by writing in the file, and because it’s all in real-time you can watch the other person type. It’s amusing to watch how fast someone else can type and how quickly they pick up on their typos.

Plus, AB666 is a nutjob who had me in stitches most of the time. His online persona may seem dark, and some of his stories may be too, but don’t let that fool you. AB666 himself is a riot.

It seems a bit silly to admit this since it’s a play that takes about 3hrs to perform, but it’s taken me about that long to “convert” the story in to modern language since I write out the gist of what is happening and how people are reacting. Oh yeah, did I mention that I’ve only managed to “convert” two scenes?

It would have been faster if I literally set it up as a script and “translated” the dialogue in to modern language. Instead I have passages such as “Theseus tells [Hermia] that she must either die or become a nun. If she won’t marry Demetrius she won’t be allowed to marry anyone.”

Oh! And speaking of Demetrius…. I never before picked up on how much of a jerk he is! Either that, or I completely forgot that part of the story. He’s just this major… well, I’ll use “jerk” again even though I could use more colorful language. Although the idea of a love-square works wonderfully for the Helga > Arnold > Lila > Arnie > Back to Helga dynamic, having Arnold as Demetrius might not be the best idea. AB666 and I are going to have to take a few artistic licenses with the original story so that Arnold as Demetrius is still his lovable “underdog” self. That being said, Lysander is a fantastic character that you can really sympathize with, which isn’t really Arnie at all. So more liberties will be taken so that Arnie actually has a personality…

We’re still trying to figure out the exact format of the story as well. Do we want a straight cross-over? Leave the story-more-or-less the same, just with Hey Arnold characters instead? Did we want to change the names to the Hey Arnold equivalents, or do we want to do the same thing as in the “What’s Opera, Arnold?” episode and make strange name mashes, i.e. – CarmHelga or Ruth McCarmen for Carmen, Don Arnold for Don José, or Curlmillo for Escamillo? Do we have it set up very much like "What's Opera, Arnold?" and have the characters dream/imagine they're in that play? Or do we create our own story loosely based off of  the concept of "A Midsummer Night's Dream"? I mean they sort of had love potions in the show before in the episode "Helga's Love Potion", but that turned out to be a grape soda placebo. Since everyone under the love spell had no clue what was going on a placebo effect won't really do much.

Eh, we'll figure it out.

Finally, I made some - not much, but still better than none - progress in my pantheon building for Gyateara. Namely, I've come up with a list of the most commonly used "Godly Domains" that appear in both D&D and Greco-Roman faith. Domains such as "Sky" or "Wildlife" or "Roads/Travel" or "War", etc. My next task is to try to figure out what gods I create will be in charge of what domain(s), and if they are in charge of multiple domains, how are they connected. I also have to be sure that all of the "Cleric Domains" in D&D are represented by the "Godly Domains" so that the cleric-specific spells in D&D can still be used if/when I run Gyateara as a campaign setting.

Well, I think I've sat for enough. Time to get my lazy butt back in gear. To writing and exercise and productivity!
